    VIDEO LINK: czcams.com/video/ehEx5cpurtg/video.html = Many Questrions to Entomologist Dr Victor Fursov: About Entomology, Insects, Passion, Collections. = Questrions to Entomologist in Ukraine: Dr Victor Fursov Answers.
    Entomologist, Dr Victor Fursov will answer on FAQ of his viewers, who have sent it earlier, and who can ask questions just on-line. English and Russian languages are welcome. QUESTIONS:
    1) When and how your interest in insects started, do you remember?
    2) Did your friends and family supported you with your entomology career, what were their ideas about entomology?
    3) What is your favorite specie or species and can you explain why do you like it?
    4) Why did you choose Chalcid wasps to study?
    5) If not for chalcid wasps, which insect species would you study?
    6) You upload at least one video almost everyday as i saw, do you enjoy doing it?
    7) If there are, what are the worst things about being an entomologist?
    8) Why scientists kill insects?
    9) What do you recommend to young insect lovers?
    10) In Czech Republic, it is possible - for example for students or other interested people with some knowledge in biology - to make a ''praktikum'' or internship at a museum or institute. Is this in use or common in Ukraine too? This means to work for example for two or three weeks at a museum of natural history without payment as a freelancer or volunteer. Some of our students asked me this question.
    11) Possibly, Shmalhausen institute of Zoology in Kiev, Ukraine, has a very large entomological collection. It is the largest one in Ukraine? Or there are yet other state collections with almost the same size in Ukraine? Or large private collections?
    12) Are there important private collectors of insects - particulary of beetles and butterflies in Ukraine? 13) Is it allowed to catch for private reasons/collections for example butterflies in Ukraine, somewhere in the open landscape? I'm not talking about species in the Red Book or such specimens living inside of nature reserves or national parks, of course! I am asking because in my country its very strictly for private people without official scientific background and papers.

    I have a cuttling (dumb cane) from my grandmother who passed on some 15 years ago. I have it growing in a vase of water and it's doing really well. Its only one plant with 5 leaves. It's trying to outgrow it's vase. As far as I see it's only the main stalk so if I cut it that will only leave a stalk with roots and the rest of the plant. My question is if I cut it and put it in water will the plant root and the stalk with roots grow a new plant. I'm afraid to cut it but would like more of these plants since it belong to my grandmother.

In the last five min of this video, you said one can leave the parent stems and new leaves will regrow. Do these new leaves typically grow from the cut stem? It appears on mine that there is a black mold growing on the top. Any recommendations are appreciated, thank you!

      Aloha from Hawaii, the 50th State of the United States 😀
      I'm beyond the years of a student and have entered the "red zone" for retirement, but I've always had many interests.
      Through my younger years I've been into plants, had several gardens, had many animals, which were the opportunity growing up in a rural area.
      I live in the city, and the animals I'm allowed is one cat and many house plants.
      We do what we can in the world that we live in 😊
      From your accent, I assume you're Russian or Ukranian... maybe Czech? I'm not good with European accents. Your kindness shows through, and I wish you much happiness and success.

    You should do a followup video with the rooted plants and potting. Just an idea. Why do you allow it to dry 24 hours before putting it in water? I did this cutting and putting in water process and after 4 months still there are no roots. The only thing I did differently was I did not allow it to dry.

    • @alisekamss2218
      @alisekamss2218 Před 4 lety +3

      I believe it's because when cut part is let to dry up, it can close the cut and avoid rotting/getting all glum at the cut part which speeds rooting afterward. I've been doing that to my ZZ plant. Once I don't let dry up and close, it keeps the steam constantly glum and eventually it divides into the water turning Brown and not rooting.

    Hello Victor... Im having a difficult time finding information on my dieffenbachia about root rot. Well at least i think that is the issue. a few month ago i noticed that rather slowly the bottom leaves were turning a light brown and would become very soft. Clearly they were dying so i snip off the leaf, a few weeks later another leaf would do the same....so just today i took the plant out of the soil (plant is about 2.5 ft) to look at the roots and they appear to be healthy. when i started to clean out the root ball of soil i found a lot of fuzz like material in the middle. it is a brown color, At first i thought it was cat hair (cause that stuff gets everywhere) but looking more into it, it is deeply waved in the center of the rootball of my plant. im thinking bugs now. (for sure not from our cat, he is very orange) Well now my plant is lying here on the table fully exposed. i did clip some of the root tips, cleaned out most of this suspicious fuzz. i really would hate to lose this plant, it comes from my recently missed grandparents from my uncle. the plant is about 4 or 5 yrs old. i have never had an issue with it untill now. any words of wisdom are greatly appreaciated.

    Wow! It's gotten so soooooo tall!
    Btw, our dog knocked out some of my plants including my dumb cane. It's getting taller (but not like that) then suddenly it's not able to stand up on it's own. And I did just like that. Now, watching this vid to make sure I did the right thing. But apparently missed the drying out part. Well, living in Philippines where it's hot everyday except gets a 'lil colder when winter's ending somewhere we get to enjoy some cool breeze.
    Anyway, hope my plant lives. And our dog too. Since I'm very much aware how toxic some of my plants are; especially dumb cane.
    *sigh* 😩

    • @VictorFursov
      @VictorFursov  Před 7 lety

      Well, thanks for good question. You can try to do it again. In a normal situation roots should come in 1-2 weeks. So, try: 1) take stem shoots out of water for few houws to dry them 2) add black activated Carbon pill in a water (to prevent rotating) 3) add if possible "activator of growth" = heteroauxin (some drops, from flower shop) (or simply - few drops of Aloe vera stem for activating a growth process 4) put your shoots again in a water and wait for 2 weeks. Good luck. Hopefully it will be OK.

    Can this be done with all plants? I have plant that is over 8 ft tall. I don't know what kind of plant it is, but the stem is wood. I've had for 7 years. It was approximately 5 inches tall when I got it. I don't want to kill it. Please help.

    • @VictorFursov
      @VictorFursov  Před 8 lety

      I am NOT Sure that it is possible for ALL plants. But if the "view" and size of plant became very uncomfortable, you must do something. If you will put the plant or seedlings in the water, it will be helpful to get ROOTS! Roots are the most important for survival of all plants! Try to get roots, an dyour plant will grow. Or, take YOUNG plant nearby, and transplant it too! S, you will have 2 plants. GOOD LUCK!

  • @Babyjohn8170
    @Babyjohn8170 Před 5 lety +10

    Why do you have to wait 24 hours before you put the plant in water? I have the same plant, I normally just cut it, and put it in water immediately and it grows. I've had the plant over 14 years. Could you explain why it's important to wait 24 hours a little bit more please?

    • @EAMeyer
      @EAMeyer Před 5 lety +12

      I don't know about dieffenbachia, but with succulent propagation it's recommended to wait for 24 hrs or up to a few days for a callus to form. It reduces the likelihood of rot and prepares the plant cells for root follicle production.
      Lots of plants seem to do alright without this step though.
