After posting my comment, I remembered that back in the day, we visited the Eden Prairie Mall where Mallrats was filmed, around 2000. My brother lived in Mpls at the time, and after visiting MoA, we headed out to Eden Prairie. I think the mall had been remodeled quite a bit since the movie filmed but there were still recognizable spots. Alas, no LaForce sightings on our visit. 😞

For anyone who lived in the Washington area in the '70s and listened to AM radio, you'll remember WMAL morning hosts Harden & Weaver and they would always mention Iverson Mall - probably a paid plug.
My Dad grew up in Hillcrest Heights. When I was little, we would go to visit my grandparents, and I remember my parents driving on Iverson Street under the walkway and really liking the ambiance of the lightbulbs. It was also the sign that we nearly there. Thank you for both your videos on this mall, as it brought back memories of visiting my grandparents. You rock!

I Love intercom lady. Thank you for another awesome vid. I have PTSD unfortunately and malls are impossible places for me to visit. The shot of the underground parking. Reminded of my local Wolco a Woolworths department store here in the 🇬🇧 UK. The 1st time me & my mom visited I few days after opening. Was the day after watching to Original Dawn of the Dead movie. As I’m called Dawn it’s a given I was prone to Dawn jokes. Our visit to the shop was plesent until we entered the Delicatessen. When over the tannoy they played the Dawn of the Dead mall music. Me & my mom where in fits of giggles. People gave us funny looks. The walk from the shop to the bus stop was terrifying. Through a unlit car park or a very steep ramp ( which was impossible in winter) . This structure was torn down in the 80,s . I ❤️ your vids. I think as someone who unfortunately has had to shop online due to severe PTSD & a active Stalker . 2020 was less stressful . Keep giving us amazing content & keep safe ❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋🇬🇧

I was always scared to go on the escalator because I thought my shoelaces would get stuck in it and I'd end up getting chewed up by the machine, so I'd always make sure that my laces were tied up really short and double knotted (hell I'm 39 now and I still do this) before I'd get on it. Either that or I'd just wear flip flops and mind my toes.
I’m curious, who do you have voicing the “intercom lady” in all your episodes? Is it your Mom or another family member, or a friend closer to your age? They really nail the voice and accent every time. I get a perfect visual of the “character” being portrayed.

How much editing do you have to do to your audio after you record it? What I mean is, do you need to do a lot of pitch adjustments or do you really pull off that voice? Even if you need to edit, I still think you nail it! No pitch changes can capture the intonations and inflections that you pull off. The accent and tone are spot-on.

It’s not difficult to change one’s recorded voice, if one knows how to use filters & pitch shift - Something which Sal clearly has at least an understanding of, if not a mastery. The PA voice was nicely done. 😁

Iverson Mall and Marlow Heights in the mid 60's through the mid 70's was a thriving mall that had something for everyone. By the late 70's and into the 80's it started to decline. Thank's Sal for listing the series of events that help lead to it's decline. I've lived my entire life in and around the beltway. I've personally witnessed several other malls that suffered simlar fates. Landover and White Flint Mall in MD as well as Landmark and the original Springfield Mall in VA all went out of business. Springfield Mall is one of the few malls that appears to have successfully re-developed. As a child I remember looking up at that 3rd level above the Iverson Mall crossover and wondering what was up there. Thanks Sal for answering many questions for me. Like many of the malls in the DMV, Iverson had it's hey-day and fortunately for me I was able to witness it.
I get your reference alright! Believe me, my mother instilled true fear and respect for escalators in us. And, yes, she had several terrifying stories to emphasis her point.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Iverson Mall somehow survived another 100 years. Despite being the grimiest, dirtiest mall in the DC area since the 80's, it still lives. Its outlived so many better malls in the area that its crazy. This area will probably be the last in the DC area to gentrify as well (if ever), so I foresee it being around much longer.

Back in 1979 I worked at a deli that used to be located on the second floor on the same side of the mall as Montgomery Wards. I later worked at a ladies clothing store over on the other side of the mall not too far away from where the fountain was. Thanks for the memories

I do wish parents would teach kids to fear and respect escalators. All day I see kids play on them and parents just laugh. I have to step in and say “this is not a toy.” We had a bloodbath once, I had to clean it. Shoe ripped in 1/2 and 1 toe ripped 90% off

I remember during the Christmas seasons searching for a parking spot on even the top (open air) floor of those now empty garages. You could shop at Woodie's and Hecht's (Marlow Heights) without going downtown. You were right though, customer safety has a big effect on clientele, and thereby success.

I really enjoy your videos! You have the perfect voice for narrating! I grew up in the 70's to 80's time period. So the mall was my life! It's sad seeing malls closing all over. My favorite mall was Hunt Valley Mall. I lived right up the street from that mall. I wish I would have taken more pictures of that mall back then. I miss it!
I haven't been in that mall in decades and don't miss it or regret not going there, I think malls have seen their days

Ahhhh yessssssss... Iverson Mall... I've gotten head several times and smoked quite a few Jays on the 2nd level of the parking garage there over the years... I was sad when they blocked off the 2nd level to cars a few years back...

I graduated from Suitland high school right down the street from Iverson Mall. Never really frequented that mall but I definitely remember Iverson Street cutting through the middle of it. I am honestly surprised to see so many stores open. I thought it would be far worse.

That mezzanine office level reminds of the liminal spaces in your Crystal City video.
Iverson Mall was a traditional strip mall - and one of the oldest such in all of Maryland. (It started with Montgomery Ward and Woodward and Lothrop as the anchors -a pair of locally-based chain department stores; neither chain exists today. The former was replaced with supersized discount retailer Forman Mills - which still occupies the space.

I grew up in Silver Spring MD, I remember always going to Laurel and Wheaton Malls, but when I got to middle school friends introduced me to Montgomery and White Flint and Columbia. Even back then I kinda wondered how so many malls could exist. Now I know it didn't turn out so well.
Yep laurel got demolished then went to open air. Though had so many memories there. Also the shopping center thats now lowes were the Kmart and movie theater use to be.

As a young child. I got my shoelace stuck at the bottom of the escalator. Even though I quickly got it loose after someone hit the ER stop. I had learned my lesson. For years I feared riding on the escalator and opted for the elevator or stairs. Now I can ride the escalator without fear, but I use caution and take it slowly out of respect for the beast that it can be.
I grew up in the area. Someone was also killed in either the late 70s/early 80s during a robbery of a jewelry store in the mall. I spent many a day skipping school and walking around that mall killing time in the early 70s. Also, every Saturday, walk around the mall. I think I had a job interview once in the office building section.

As a child in the 50’s, there was a relatively short but very narrow escalator in a dept. store in my city. It had deep, long wooden treads, quite unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere. To me it looked like alligator teeth waiting to swallow me. I was terrified of it. No other escalator bothered me. And shouldn’t the one going down be called a “Descalator”?
Remember Landover Mall (it's totally destroyed now), and the movie theater they had there. Iverson Mall is less than a shadow of what it was.

I was in Virginia yesterday and noticed that Landmark Mall in Alexandria Virginia is totally torn down
Malls were an iconic part of my life. I cannot watch one of these videos without thinking of footage of the drowned "Titanic", and the ghostly music playing somewhere in the background inside my head.

I enjoyed this video. The footage was bright and sharp. The last time I visited Iverson Mall several years ago, I was happy to buy some chocolate chip and snickerdoodle cookies from The Great Cookie. That was the best business there, in my opinion.

Way back in the year 2002, I was a junior in high school. I got kicked out of the Target at the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua NH along with my best friends. We used to have what was called, "escalator wars". Two of us would try to run up the down while two just rode the up. First one up won. Seems so lame in my late 30s but boy was it fun back then.

I'm surprised that a child reached into the escalator. My generation-I am also a child of the 90's-as well as many children of the newer generations by their own confirmation, have developed an innate fear of escalators. They are like a metallic mouth giving a long, infinite chew 😬

I am a DC native and as a child we moved around the area alot....we were in walking distance of Iverson mall...Also got school clothes at Landmark,Beacon Mall,Parking ton in Arlington, Tysons Corner etc..
Also Springfield Mall.

That was the mall I went to as a kid, and the Carrozza's were our neighbor in Tantallon On The Potomac.

Anchor stores like Sears JC Penney and Woodies keep declaring bankruptcy unfortunately and closing stores nationwide - Lakefofest Mall only has Macy's as an Anchor of the original 5 Anchors

All kids were taught a healthy respect for escalators when I was kid. I have a vague memory of my mom getting part of her clothes stuck in the landing of one. I haven't seen a Roses for over 30 years. I cant remember what the theme of the store was then but I am certain it wasn't just random cheap crap stuffed in bland, white, sterile looking store.
If my memory serves me correctly, it looks a lot brighter there than the prior episode of the mall.
i remember Iverson Mall when I was a teen. @8:01 there used to be a news and magazine stand in the corner where you could view porn mags. the underground crossing where cars and buses zipped thru@8:33 was kind of a dangerous area. upstairs there was a Kemp Mill records store. @27:04. this was the exact booth area where I bought my Nintendo system. I paid in coins from my piggy bank. I also remember the Montgomery Wards.
Yes Lake Forest in is on life support and WRS who owns it now, plans to pull the plug. A mix of residentialIf, retail and office space. those are the plans then you know its on life support at this point.

Roses *would* have just a jumble of cheap stuff. They started out like a "five and ten", ie., a discount store where (originally) things cost 5 or 10 cents. So, if anyone out there isn't familiar with Murphy's, but remembers GC Murphy's, Kresge's, Woolworths, Grant's, etc., Roses is basically a larger one of those, somewhere in size between the 5 and 10's and their larger versions (Woolworths->Woolco, GC Murphy's->Murphy Mart). Of course, prices have long since risen from the 5 and 10 cent days. (I'm a 70s kid, and even back in the 70s, my mother and grandmother called those stores "five and ten"s, i.e., they were a type of store, like a convenience store, department store, record store, etc. even though by then you were lucky to find things for a quarter, and most things cost a few dollars.)
Forman Mills, Shoppers World... they're more "cheap stuff" shops.
It's interesting how the really large discount department stores like Murphy Mart, etc. didn't survive, because the competition with Wal-Mart, K-Mart (FYI: Kresge is to K-Mart, as Woolworths was to Woolco) and Target was just too much, but these mid-sized ones, bigger and offering a greater variety of merch than small Dollar General type stores, have survived in America. Here in Australia, we don't have mid-sized variety stores like that... just a couple Dollar General like chains and bunches and bunches of independent (or small franchise) small "random cheap goods imported from Asia" shops that people go to for small kitchen gadgets, an imported snack, some cheap storage bins, or party goods.
I wouldn't call Wal-Mart or Target "mid-sized." They're very large stores compared to what you'd find in a mall, or even a building like a Walgreens or Dollar General. Their sheer size has made them an albatross in more rural communities, as they offer groceries, electronics, video games, toys, books, you name it, and with a decent enough variety. They're meant to be the one-stop shop, where you get EVERYTHING.
@@jesuszamora6949 Ahh, I think you misunderstood. By "these mid-sized" I was referring to places like Roses, Forman Mills, Shoppers World, which have survived. And I was lumping in the larger ones I mentioned with the OTHER large ones Wal-Mart and Target, which opened more outlets that gave them economy of scale.
@@randomcommenterfromdownund8949 not sure about the other ones, but Forman Mills sells a lot of old merch other stores can't sell or are factory seconds. And they can be very cheap, which is why they tend to be in more economically depressed areas. They seem to sell stuff below even Ross or TJ Maxx quality which are often overruns or old stock (last years fashion items or lines).
Rose's is such a weird store concept, it's like a shittier big lots or a more organized Tuesday morning.
