    Hello! Jam's cousin here. I want to thank Jam for letting me guest on her channel (char 😆) and ask me questions about my life here in Thailand as a teacher.
    Disclaimer: My answers are all based on my experiences here so far. It does not reflect the whole Filipino community working here, nor the education system of the schools. It's all very different so don't chew us out if you hear something different from what you've heard or experienced. Please don't be rude.
    There could be more questions that may have not been answered so feel free to comment down and Jam and I will do our best to answer it. Thank you 😊

    I was actually thinking of applying in Thailand but was a bit hesistant because I am not an educ grad parang taking a chance if pwede. I am definitely interested but seeing the starting rate and knowing that I am earning more here than if I work in Thailand na with no Educ background, I am a bit hesistant if its a good choice. Hays, I wanted a shift in career pero it would be a risk especially that it would also affect my capacity to pay my own bills.

    Wouldn’t it be normal that a qualified certified teacher from the west (white or black) gets a higher salary than a Filipino who only worked office jobs?

    • @jamrellb
      @jamrellb  Před 3 měsíci +4

      Hi. I think you misunderstood. Of course, an office worker with no teaching experience would NOT be hired as a teacher at an international school. I meant a Filipino teacher who is board-certified, has degrees, and has teaching experience.
      Between a Filipino teacher and a white teacher with an American passport, the white teacher will be paid more.
      It's not just Filipinos- other Southeast Asian teachers also receive the same unequal pay. That's just how the current system works here.

    Kamusta! I'm a Fil-Am dual citizen raised mostly in the US, so a native English speaker. Is the salary difference more based on background or actual race? I realize that it's important to have foreign looking teachers to advertise for the school. White people serve marketing purposes. It's just business, it makes sense. I wonder if being half White with a US passport is good enough for the higher salary. What do you think? And will having a PH passport as well be an advantage?

    • @jamrellb
      @jamrellb  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi! It’s both, but they will mainly base it on your passport/nationality. Teachers with western passports are paid 3-4 times more. Looking white will also give you an added advantage, so if you’re half white with a US passport, that’s pretty much a guarantee for a high salary in international schools here.
      Retention is different though. International school parents can be quite fussy and demanding especially since they pay almost a million baht per year for their kid’s tuition. While a strong passport helps with getting a job, keeping that job will require teaching skill, resilience, and adaptability to the school’s politics.
      Good luck, and I hope this helps! 😊

      @@jamrellb Thank you! Problem is, I don't have teaching experience and my bachelor's is Liberal Studies English and Math, so not exactly education. I don't think IS will hire me. In Japan that's ok, they will hire me...but with the new inflation the pay is equal to Thailand! And the food in Japan costs 5x more! Is it possible to still get a decent job teaching job in Thailand with no experience?
      I don't really look White. I look like those 80's Asian comic characters. Some Pinoys assume I'm Pinoy, some don't. I do well in East Asia. But their economies are so trashed there's no point teaching there. There's no way to save money. I never thought I would see that Thailand and the Philippines are more rich than East Asia. What a crazy year. It's about to get crazier.

      @@oodo2908 Some private bilingual schools will hire those with no experience as long as you have a bachelor’s degree and you can teach. The salary isn’t as high, but it’s good enough to get your foot in the door and gain some experience to hopefully get into international schools.
      As long as you’re smart with your money, private bilingual school salaries are enough to live comfortably here. 😊

      Not sure if you've been keeping up with the world economy, but its so bad in America right now that its better to live in SEA off of 1.5K USD a month rather than 3000 (sometimes 4000) in the USA.
