Vodyanoy - The Odd Water Spirit of Russian Folklore

The Vodyanoy is a water spirit in Russian mythology. Described as a being with scaly skin and fish eyes, he dwells in rivers and lakes. He acts as a protector of the waters and can be vengeful towards those who pollute his home or disrespect his existence, dragging them to the depths.

Vodenjak - In Serbian mythology, this being is a water demon that is not very kind to people - it often drowns people in rivers. He is imagined as a small man with a gray beard and hair, trousers and a cap and is often overgrown with moss and lives deep under the surface of the water in a glass castle. It is believed that it originated from the first drowned person of a river and therefore every river has its own Vodenjak. It is interesting that a similar creature was found on the sculptures of the Stone Age culture called Lepenski vir.

He can have blue to gray eyes and scale like skin as he could be depiction of an old man, protector of waters and those who sail/travel. Now he is being celebrated around 20th december. So we could say he is swapped for st Nicolas when Christianity conquered our lands. There I deciphered it for you :)
