In this video, the United States Marine Band utilizes a number of top action rotary valve (TARV) brass instruments, as well as a helicon, piston valve cornets, and a circular TARV cornet. The soloist is performing on an instrument of Patrick Gilmore's, the famous American bandleader who lived from 1829-1892. Patrick Gilmore was famous for leading the Boston Brigade Band, the 24th Massachusetts Volunteers Band, and the Famous 22nd Regiment Band in New York. Patrick Gilmore was a contemporary of John Philip Sousa and helped elevate bands to a prominent position equal to symphony orchestras.
