  • Surfing Balian Beach
Balian’s A-frame waves provide a forgiving left and a faster right. The runoff from the river has created a deep channel that allows for an easy paddle.
    BEST CONDITIONS
    Swell S - W
    Size 2 - 5ft
    Wind N - NW
    Tide Mid - High
3 to 5 feet is typical.
It’s almost always bigger here than in the South.
If other spots are working, you’ll have bigger waves with less of a crowd at Balian.
Sunrise and sunset sessions are usually surfed only by those staying locally.
The wave is much more forgiving than other spots in Bali,
although the waves are usually a lot bigger than other spots.
Food and lodging are within walking distance.
    SEASON: Apr-Oct
    BREAK DIRECTION: Left and Right
    BOTTOM: Sand, Rock

Beautiful ambient music, it's a real peaceful buzz watching the different wave sections from further out to the inside and interesting surf set up

Beautiful shots of the surfers I could watch this all day. Only thing better would be if I was in the water surfing!

It's a great intermediate surf break. I was there for two weeks and this was the typical surf every day. This was as crowded as it ever got. Most days had less than half of the number of surfers in this video.

I really would love to learn how to surf! It looks so liberating and thrilling. I got to watch some surfers when I was in Sri Lanka. It certainly looks like hard work! I like the information that you give in this video :)

Ella- surfing is truly an amazing art form- just look at these surfers. Learning to surf really changes a person's life. It is not easy to learn and it takes many hours of dedication, but totally worth the effort in the long run.
I don't want you to be discouraged so it's good to know that realistically, it takes at least 100 hours in the water to begin riding small green waves with some degree of control. Therefore, only those who live near surf-able waves are able to learn and progress in a reasonable time frame. Even a two week vacation to Bali or Hawaii or Australia won't be enough, especially if you only do that once per year. I tried that method and it just didn't work, at least for me. Five years into surfing, I still hand't mastered any of the basic skills even though I had vacationed to very good surf spots over those five years. It wasn't until I moved to the coast that now I can finally surf like some of the people in this video. The past two years, I've averaged 4-5 hours of surfing per week and spent two solid weeks surfing in Bali every day last October plus a trip down the California coast surfing at least one per day, often twice. My point is, you have to spend a lot of time in the water.
I often tell people that you need a fire in your belly in order to learn to surf. The ocean will beat you back multiple times and you'll need some grit to keep pushing forward. But just wait, you'll be sitting out there beyond the breakers on your longboard at sunset one day with dolphins leaping on the horizon, laughing with your new friends, just blown away by how beautiful it all is and you're part of it. That's what surfing is all about.
Anyway, good luck and if you stick with it, you can definitely learn and enjoy this sport. Aloha.

This video is just about the surf break at Balian. It's a few hours from where most the surf schools so it's mostly a destination for experienced surfers. I took the word "Guide" out of the title since it may mean something different to non-surfers than it does to surfers.

Can you rent a surf board so you don't have to bring your own board? Is this a sand or reef break?

    • @LivingOverseasTV
      @LivingOverseasTV  Před 5 lety +1

It's a rocky, sand beach and a reef break. I surfed it on a day that was fairly big and the wave was breaking at a spot even further out than in this video. There were three good sections. There are places to rent boards.

Bali is a great place to learn. You should also try Batu Bolong Beach near Canngu. It is quite the scene- good for beginners. Can be crowded.

Have done it. Tends to be fat and foamy. Some OK reforms some days, and better with a bit more west in it to stand the left up, and bowl it in front of you. RH river mouth very occasionally gets hollow. It is smaller than the well known south breaks. Yes the odd bull shark in the river water can be 'interesting'. One attack that I know of. Don't surf in the river mouth when it is raining.

Looks like a nice spot, but bull sharks are just a big nope. My local spots on Reunion Island are now infested with them and all activities in the sea are now prohibited because of this. They took a lot of lives on such a small island :(. I hope they'll stay chill in Balian. Check out this documentary about it czcams.com/video/4NLifoApTMc/video.html

Beware of bull sharks here. They come feed on the dirty river mouth especially after rainy season!
