I disagree. She is far from a great woman . She has always been selfish and even stole the medicine from patients and took them for herself. She pit patients in harms way by doing that. She apparently was never caught but should have had her nursing credentials stripped.
JD's Mom was wonderful at the Convention. They've both come a long way.
No one has perfect parents. Only God is perfect.
This mom is brave and does not shy away from being accountable.
JD Nance is still in the process of healing.There is forgiveness in relationship.

How is she brave? Brave is owning your mistakes and abusive behavior. Her words in this interview does not show that she believes she alone is responsible for her actions. His book is written from 'a child's view..." How can a healthy, healed parent diminish his pain with such a statement?

She faced it and took responsibility for what happened and didn't try to deny it. I admire her for that. That takes strength. Maybe she couldn't be that mom back then, but she can be now. Good for them.😊

She represents a lot of people in this country and hopefully will inspire many to go on your journey of sobriety. I wasn’t an addict but was married to one so I can relate to the pain. I long ago forgave him however it did cost him his marriage.
I like the way she said it’s from a child’s viewpoint. Her son live it as a child and that was his childhood. I’m glad they are close now and she owns up to her responsibility.

Despite all the damage and heartbreak she caused JD, I love how he honoured his mum at the RNC and so did the crowd. Now if they were lefties they’d be full of hate and wanting to share ‘their truth’ and be victims etc. instead this crowd showed honour, respect and forgiveness. Seriously one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Shows the grace of God. Blessings from Australia 🇦🇺

Just watched the movie on Netflix , and what an emotional film Indeed.. sometimes we have to have that push from whatever way and hopefully it all works out and in this it sure did .. the quote ' there is light at the end of the tunnel" is so true but at the time if some one says that it doesn't feel that way.. god bless . 🙏
JD is an amazing man . I know his Mother has to be so proud of him . Forgiveness is one of the best gifts a person can give to another .Mother had to forgive herself and JD had to forgive Mother . Best wishes for a wonderful future as JD Vance becomes the next Vice President of the United States Of America. Just imagine all his family around him as he takes the oath to serve our wonderful country. Grandma’s Bible will probably be right there with his hand placed on it . We now need a part two of Hillbilly Elegy.

My dad has the disease of addiction…it really does destroy a family. I thank God everyday for gifting me the wonderful mother I was blessed to have. She stayed married to my father through it all and was strong for my brother and I. I believe God gave her graces beyond measure to raise us. My father has been clean and sober now for about 31 years. My Freshmen year of high school was when it hit it’s peak….I’m 46 years old now and my beloved mother passed away in 2020. JD is relatable to many Americans who have the broken story…I myself never got hung up in the alcohol and addiction world, but that’s how it goes…you either see it’s affects and hate it so much you don’t want anything to do with it or you get trapped and have trouble getting out because you never learn good coping skills. JD had God and other family that were there for him to rise above and clearly for his mom as well.

You are human and you had an addiction. It is truly amazing that you were able to overcome and begin to heal, forgive and mend the hurt, but your actions and choices caused great harm to everyone who loved you. You will never be able to fully understand the damage that it causes to developing young children who are innocent and when robbed of basic security...some of those scars will last a lifetime. I am proud of your sobriety....but I am sorry...you won't win "mother of the year" award. You chose drugs and men over your biological children. That is the ugly truth. I wish you continued success, happiness and most of all....the love and grace you deserve as you go forward. The future is yours to make up for the past.
What I got out of his book was that producing a child is a huge responsibility and once you have one you should take responsibility for that kid and do the best you can for that child bc the child did not ask to be born. There is no doubt that his childhood being so bad must have caused him a lot of heartbreak, disappointment and damaged his psyche.

Congratulations on 10 years sober!!! I have a son, 16. I am almost 2 years sober. I can totally relate to you. I thought between family and friends I was doing okay as a Mom. Now that I am sober I am able to be the best Mom I can be. Your story I am sure is hard to look back on, as I know mine is. However, I am so blessed that the book was written and the movie was made. Everything to regret regarding her children. Do not dismiss the pain and suffering they still struggle with privately in their hearts. She never took accountability in this interview. "I guess I should have...' etc. Putting it back on him, very cruel and gaslighting to say it is from a child's view. She should say she is proud of him for conquering the demons she put on him and she is forever thankful he had her mother and his sister.
And acknowledge he is a success despite her abuse and neglect.
She should write a book herself! It's tough but she seems to be doing fine now. For sure heartbreaking.
She isn't ready. She would protect herself so much it wouldn't ring true with a consequence of being boring.For example, her motivation for buying all of the books at her local Barnes and Noble. It was to protect herself.
So proud of your tenacity, perseverance, and hard work in becoming sober. That is a huge accomplishment that you should be proud of. I have no doubt that J.D. is proud of you too. Also, thank you for modeling what is really important in life, the power of love and forgiveness. What a testimony!

@@betsyandall I’m so happy to hear his mother is now clean and sober, but it makes me sick to my stomach hearing about the abuse and or neglect children suffer at the hands of those adults who are suppose to nurture and protect them. Even those like JD who end up making a good life for themselves in adulthood, they are nonetheless left with hidden and sometimes not so hidden emotional scars. 😢
Good for her for overcoming addiction, i hope her heartbreak over her son's book serves as a warning to other people in a denial about the impact their behavior has on their families, especially children. Just because it's hard to hear doesn't make it any less true.

so glad she acknowledged his pain, so many parents do not, and there is alot of diffenrce in the mind set of a child and to adult in denial in the fog of it, as a grandmother and about to slow down and now your raising 2 teens the best you can, all you can do is know you did your best, I wish his grandma could see what a difference she made, is was worth everything she sacrificed and went through and she would change nothing, of the love her grand child . the movie was great, its on Netflix if you haven't seen it, so glad mom was there supporting her child at the NRC congrats to mom for being supportive, hugs

Life’s sure hard and the struggle is real! I’ve yet to read the book, but the movie really hit home on several levels. Me being a single mom of 2, eventually step mom to a 3rd. Now grandmother aka Mamaw. To 7 & Now a great grandmother to 3 little ones. Addiction has been no stranger in my life. Now your son, JD is shinning a light a bringing hope to those that feel they’re damaged goods and can only hope & reach for the leftovers.. You helped raise a very special man! Thank you & prayers for your continued recovery 1 day at a time..

Then why do they want to do away with the same student loan programs that helped get him through Yale?? Don't others deserve the same chance to get a great education. Check more info on what Republicans want to do with student aid, such as Pell Grants! They want to defund it, along with the Dept of Education, that over sees it! More of the same, ' More for me, none for thee'!

My Mamaw and my Grandma were always there for me growing up. Those two wonderful ladies made me what I am today. Mamaw also encouraged my Dad to be there for me and my family when I was grown. ❤❤❤

Wow..I teared up when she said she bought copies of the book. I have been in recovery for 12 years and have so much respect for her honesty and transparency.
He has done very well with his life mostly in thanks to his mimaw. His morher was like so many drug addict parents. He is one of few that pulled himself out. His grandmother didn't allow him to get in the poor pitiful me mode that many wind up in. Bad things have happened to a lot of us. You have to want better and work for it. I hope he and President Trump take the White House.

Wow! This is an amazing interview and I just finished your son's book and I have a lot of respect for him and where he has come but also for you and where you have come. Sitting in the audience last night at the RNC you looked amazing and I am so glad he cognized your tenure of sobriety. I am just over 1 year.
I have alot of Bowman's in my Family. Most originally from around Owsley County, and other Counties in Berea, Kentucky. J.D's biological Father is probably a blood Relative of mine. Very interesting life story. I can relate to some "select" parts of it.

I see it as the opposite of what you said. I took it as it must have been so overwhelming and frighting as a child who could not understand the severity of her addiction or the trauma of her own childhood that she experienced. It looks like the generational cycle of addiction/domestic abuse has come to an end and healing is now in the process. May this families healing continue. 🙏🙏

I was not that extreme but I was Bev!! Unfortunately, 2 of my 3 girls have now gone ‘no contact’ (I guess that’s the ‘in’ thing to do these days with their generation) but my Kaley is he JD. She’s proud of how I overcame, fought and who I’ve become today. I’m 6+ years clean. She understands I was self medicating and undiagnosed mental illness (bipolar) and did the best I could. She loves unconditionally and I am so grateful for that. I hope my older two would watch this movie and show some empathy. Again and unfortunately, we live in a narcissistic society where everyone is all about “me, me, me” and that is not how they were raised but I know and take accountability for the damage I’ve caused and have apologized and done so much to make up for it. In fact the no contact situation is new (last year) and we were all good so 🤷♀️.
I’m proud of Bev and JD! I know he will make an exceptional Vice President and look forward to voting for him and Trump this November!! ❤
Listened to the audiobook today , highly recommended , it’s not too long, only about 6.5 hours. He really sheds light on this rarely discussed yet highly pathological culture in this country. But it’s also inspiring! Amazing to see his Mom in person, she sounds a little bit manipulative for sure, but also like she’s made some improvements in her life. I sure hope she has. I would like to hear her side of the story of when she tried to crash the car with her and her son in it.
It would be from an ex-addicts point of view though. Just like she was kinda dogging her own son a bit for being a child’s point of view.

Seems like she's still making excuses. I just read that they still have a strained relationship. The fact that it's from the standpoint of a child isn't really accurate. He wrote it as an adult from his memories. Something that caused us pain as a child can still cause pain years later. It can't go back and be changed.

Addiction is something that the addict creates for itself that’s what I see you don’t put your hands in the fire when you know what will happen, and in no way shape or form an excuse for abandoning your own Child the only person in the world that should love you and teach, protect you and be there for you choose to enjoy herself
I would never give flowers to anyone for being clean from drugs when I saw kids suffer for being thrown around and growing without parents

I have SO much respect for JD. He overcame his mother's appalling behavior. What is this woman's problem? What is the problem with her? She should have already known to grow up. I have SO little appreciation for this woman. She ALREADY hurt his feelings/childhood. I have immediate family members who have struggled, but didn't do HEROIN or OPIOIDS!
She is trying to rationalize her bad behavior. She doesn't think she was that bad a mother? What the hell does she mean? Her hindsight is blurred.
It's the situation here, I'm never going to say anything she did or does is okay, but to understand what people go trough you have to at least see it. Middletown how most of butler county's section 8 housing, that brings idle hands to the community, we have 2 major employers cliffs formally AK steel, and the hospital. We have had constant problems with other towns bussing in homeless. It's middletown because it's between Cincinnati and Dayton so drug runners stop here to flood middletowns downtrodden. She shouldn't have done what she did but I don't think she was in her right mind. Some people are bad people and some people are made bad people I can't tell what one she was.
