...just a short review about Cornell & Diehl's Star of the East at the old 038...also known as the "Prussian Eight"... For the location: www.google.de/maps/place/M%C3...
Amazing. My grandfather, who was an American, with a German heritage, was also in the war in Germany, and also was reported to be dead to my grandmother back here in Louisiana. It was almost a year later before he just showed up, back at home, my grandmother and family thinking he was dead the whole time... He was actually a prisoner of war most of that time, and he received a Purple Heart. The experience left him with extreme mental issues, and other health problems, still passing away way too young at 55.
Hello MarK, Like so many others here in the YTPC, I anxiously look forward to your videos. Being a retired Railroad man, this video was particularly of interest to me. As mentioned earlier by Doug Owen, in a previous comment, it is so important for us to hear stories of the war, from those on the other side. What strong and amazing people you grandparents must have been. Just imagine what it would be like, to sit and talk to them today. What fascinating memories they could share with this generation. Regretfully, I have not had the opportunity to enjoy a bowl of Cornell & Diehl's Star of the East as of yet, but your video highlighting the history of the 038, and your reflections of your grandparents, have placed it at the top of my list. Thank you again Sir, for all you do, for us here in the YTPC!!!
...yeah...in the old days, some Locomotives had that...but mainly for branches and other stuff, that could become a danger to the train...but nowadays...we don't see any cattle on the rails... :-) Take care! Be well! Mark
Really nice personal family history there Mark. Interesting that your family had such a connection to the railroad. This is what makes your channel so great. Great tobacco angles and also great stories, history, etc. Keep it up. You're one of the very best YTPC channels out there, bar none.
Hi mark , In my opinion this video is more than wonderful in several aspects, first: the method of photography that has been used in this video is so creative and professional, as well as the splendid way that you approached in order to display the products ; not to mention your exciting and warm full story about beautiful memories. truly you are a wonderful , professional and genius person . And as you always say : " take care , be well , and perhaps I will see you again " .
My mother left Riga, Latvia in 1944 with her family and boarded a German troop ship bound for Poland. They boarded a train for Hanover where they lived till 1950 and then emigrated to America. There's probably a good chance one of those engines drove the train. Enjoyed the video! I also have a can of SoTE, but haven't tried it yet.
I always look forward to your videos Professor! History often neglects to record the hardships faced by families on all sides well after the cessation of hostilities. BTW, thanks for the tip on the Dunn Hill Dark Flake, it is a wonderful tobacco.
Hello David! Thank you so much for that! And...yeah...that's just the way history often has with the fate of "smaller" people...you're right on that, my friend! Glad, you enjoy the DF! Take care! Be well! Mark
Mark, totally an enjoyable story - appreciate your sharing. Have told you before that I really like C&D tobacco as well as Dunhill. I have a bunch of "Star of the East" and will try a bowl this evening. Thank you again for your video's. Take care and God bless Jim
Hello Mark: Hope that you enjoyed the remainder of your vacation at the chateaux in France, and later on, in Paris. Wow...great video; and quite the emotional story about your grandfather. Eight years in a POW camp, and then his eventual return home, after all that misinformation. Incredible. I can only imagine how hard that must have been on your grandmother. Those war years were some difficult times, indeed. Thanks for the review on this tobacco. I have been developing a taste for the latakia blends, lately. So, I'm looking forward to opening my tin of HU Fayum Kake, soon. That should be a really good one, too. Thanks, as well, for including the Google Maps locations with the videos. I really like checking that out. All the best to you, my friend. Be Well. Ed
Ed, my good friend! Always so good, to have you here... and ...yeah...as I said...these were horrible times...my grandfather survived several death marches and escaped several times from the camps... one time, he lived for two years on a Russian small farm far in the east, together with the family there and worked with them on the farm land...he was a pretty tough guy, used to hard work...the family there didn't even know about the war...all that was far away for them...he saw many cruelties ...and as many humanity...he never had a bad word for Russians or Ukrainians ... but he didn't talk much about these times... like most of these men... Hope, you gonna enjoy the HU! Let me know, if there is anything, you need! Take care, my friend! Hope, you are well! Mark
Hi Mark, Great Intro and subject, Interesting By some weird occurence I saw two times these P 8 on the locomotive yard in Russia, and yes person can't argue,Germany and lots of its people had gone thorough very hard times during and when the war was finally over war, similarly to ours in Finnland, all the same restrictions and all them Pow's returning home from Soviet Camps, the final one did came as late as 1957))Thanks for Sharing and Take Care , my Best Greets To Bremen-De, Paul
Hello Paul, my good friend! Thanks for that! As always most interesting and thoughtful! Yeah...these were the times...let's hope, we don't face someting similar again...and let's do our part, to prevent us from that... Take care! And have a great week! Mark
yes, I love your country ,+ honest and trusthworthy people, especially those of the southern regions of Bavaria;beste Grüsse aus dem Hafen der Kotka, Paul
Thank you so much for taking the time, my friend! And for most interesting comment! ...yeah...guess, that's just the world, we live in... Take care! Be well! Mark
That story about your grandparents is fascinating, your grandmother must have been a very strong woman to go through all those false notices that her husband was dead not to mention the fact that he must have had a very strong constitution to survive as he did. You know Mark I have mentioned this to you before but it is important to hear some of these personal stories of people who were on the other side during the war. There was plenty of heartbreak for everyone in those days regardless of what uniform one was wearing. On a lighter note I have heard that the Morta wood has a faintly peaty flavor all its own so it must be interesting to smoke a latakia mixture such as Star of the East in it. Take care.
Good evening Mark, thank for yet another informative and thought provoking episode .You are a natural raconteur . I appreciate the humanistic threads to your tales ...also the ' Piping ' aspect obviously ! These posts are for me, really something to look forward to and savour. Kind regards John
Fantastic video, as always, Mark. I love your style and your stories. I hope some day I will be able to visit Germany to see where my family was from and maybe bump in to you hand have a smoke. Wouldn't that be great!
Hi mark Once again you bring a video of the highest quality to the YTPC such a treasure chest of information please keep it comping as I look forward to see where you will take us next a what story it has to give us. Stay well my friend. Andy
Watching this video probably 100 times lol. Love this tobacco and the story telling of your family history with the railroad. Your videos are so well done! Thanks Mark
Great video. I will try that tobacco sometime. interesting story of your family history. when I was a child there was a similar steam engine in the park in my home town. I spent many hours playing on it. take care
As always excellent video. Being a huge history buff and having a degree in history, I love hearing personal stories like you shared about your grandfather and family. I glad he survived the war and captivity and made it home. Thank you for the excellent content and keep up the good work!
Mark my good friend....great video! Star of the East is a tasty tobacco, though I haven't smoked it in quite a few years....I may still have a few bowls left in a jar somewhere, as I have tobacco all over the house. Interesting history you told about the Engine 8, but especially enjoyed hearing your personal history about your grandfather, my grandfather was also railroad engineer (that's what they call the person who "drives" the train here in the US) before he joined the military in 1932. Hope you're well...talk to you soon, take care, Corey
Corey, my friend! Thank you so much for taking the time! Wow...interesting, to hear about your grandfather being an railroad engineer too! Yeah...in these old days many men served the Iron horses... I'll hit you soon on voxer, my friend...my cottage is about to be ready for "moving in" soon... :-) But from Wednesday on, I'll be in Wolfenbüttel for two weeks.. We gonna talk soon! Take care! Hope, you are well! Mark
Thanks so much for your videos. Been lurking around the YT pipe community for about a year, and yours were some of the first I watched. Two of my great-grandfathers were railroad men here in the states during the first half of the 20th Century as well. I deeply appreciate your love and knowledge both of tobacco and history. God bless!
Nice video! I am a railroad man and always enjoy a good story about the railroad. A good review of the baccy as well. Thanks again for another informative and interesting video!
heyyy Mark this is a great video review and I'm a lover of trains they are so beautiful and your family history with the men all were train operators that is so cool and your smoking the Rattrays pipe and C&D Star of the east I don't knw if I would like that blend Mark I don't like Latikia but I've never tried it so I'm not sure but you always give us a beautiful tour and I enjoyed it so much mark thank you hope all is well I'll talk to you soon happy smokes my friend ☺☺☺☺☺👍👍👍👍👍 best regards Peter
Peter, my good friend! Always so good, to have you here! Hope, you doing well, my friend! And thank you sooo much for all your kind words! As always so much appreciated by heart! Let me know, if there is anything, you need from this side of the pond! Take care! Hope, you are well! And let's talk soon! Mark
Thank you for yet another great video and also for sharing such a personal story with us. Reflecting on one's geneology is truly a great way to remind us of who we really are. Take care and be well!
Hey Mark great video. Im a new subscriber. I really enjoy them. Not only do I learn about new tobaccos I get a great history lesson. Well done. Be safe. Take care.
Great video Mark. I need to show this Iron Horse to my Grandson. He loves trains so much that we go on trips to the train yards in St. Paul, Minnesota quite often. Thanks for the great review.
Thanks for sharing Mark, always interested in free history lessons! I like the way they even left the shovel in there but I'm surprised they let visitors get in the cabin. P.S. No question about it, pipe smoking is way more popular in Germany than North America. I Googled the tobacco shops in Bremen (population : 551,000) and found out there are no less than 81 of them! That's an amazing number - and lots of competition for Rolland! By the way, he just sent me some Larsen flake 32, which is unavailable in North America. It just took two days to get here. Fantastic service, as always.
Thanks for taking the time, my friend! Yeah...actually...they left the coal of the last ride in the firehole for many years...until the corrosion forced them, to take it out... Great, to hear that the order at Ronny's worked out so well! Take care! Hope, you are well, my friend! Mark
Good to see you my friend , Star of the East one of my favorites a great tobacco , I love History and the Steam Engines they chooch so nice yes they do and the story of your grandfather 8 yrs POW wow thanks for sharing this with Mark I would love to see the P8 choochin down the line what an awesome Engine it was , come see us Mark and keep on choochin
Berg, my friend! Thank you so much for stopping by! As always so much appreciated! Yeah...already thought "this old choochoo train might be something for my friend berg!"... :-) Thanks for the picture ...and your message...let's talk soon, my friend! Mark
I recently opened a tin of this from like 090220 I believe. To my disappointment I noticed fibers all over the inner packaging. Upon inspecting the flakes themselves there was chunks of fibrous rope or twine pressed right in with the flake! Had to toss the tin and get a replacement of a different blend sent seeing they only had that batch in stock.
Thanks a lot for that, my friend! Don't know why exactly...but I already thought, that this would be some baccy right up your alley.. :-) Take care! Have a great week! Mark
Mark how are you brother 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻😀😀..fantastic..fantastic video..that really is a good tobacco..any words..Haa!!😀great to see you that was an amazing story about your grandfather he was a very courageous man I can only imagine what your family had to endure at that time they were strong people no question about it thanks for sharing this with us...hope your work is going well sent you another message thank you again for your kindness and friendship be well Mark see you soon 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🍻
Brad, brother! Many thanks for watching! Always so good, to have you here! Yeah...just saw your message...and sent you some information back...hope, that will be of some help! And ...as always...thank you sooo much for all your kind words! So much appreciated by heart, my friend! Take care! Hope, you are well! Mark

What an entertaining video! In my humble opinion, one of your best. I often think as I watch your videos, what an interesting life you and your family have experienced, and I wonder what stories to tell about those tumultuous WWII years. How many POW's returned unexpectedly and to what kind of reception? WOW! So enjoyed your history of the P8 when there was the pride of workmanship and work standards maintained in the face of seemingly insurmountable attitudes and so many obstacles. Thank you as always for your varied video subjects and especially thorough review of the C&D Star of the East. As an aside , do you think that the Marshall Plan was as important to Germany as our history books claim? My thought is that since there has rarely, if ever, been a perfect plan for reconstruction following the debacle of war for either side following a conflict. A plan, however imperfect, is better than no plan which would likely leave countries to their own devices taking much more time for "resurrection" and a resemblance of prosperity. ... just a thought based on current conflict results in the middle east. Thanks again for sharing your travels and, as always, Best Regards, John
Hello John, my friend! Thank you so much for taking the time..and most kind words! So much appreciated! Yeah...well...the Marshall Plan is seen here as the main element of economic recovery after WWII... A closer look on the numbers however shows, that the amount of money spent was rather small in comparison to the GNP of Germany (even after the war) ... but I think, you just can't calculate the enormous psychological effect of the Marshall Plan on the German population. Quite the opposite to the times after WWI, the German population felt, that they wouldn't be left alone with all the mess...and we all know, that optimism is the main key to economic success... so, my guess is, that the Marshall plan, together with the (generous) offer of a future not in humiliation (like after WWI) but in friendship and partnership was decisive for the way, that (western) Germany took after the war. Perhaps, that's something, we could learn from that... But that's just my humble opinion on that... Take care, my friend! Hope, you are well! Mark
Hello from Canada another very interesting and educational video mark I always enjoy watching your videos I always learn something I was curious did your grandfather get back pay from all those years I've always like trains myself and that looks like a real Beauty behind you keep up the videos take care Merry Christmas to you and your family
Thank you so much for that, my friend! Well...no...they didn't pay him for the years in prisoners camps...and he had to begin as a simple fireman again...although, he was driving the famous fast train 01 before the war... Take care! Have a great Christmas time! Mark
Hello Mark, Thanks a lot for this video (and to talk about your family !). Smoking a pipe and learn something is always nice. For you Star of the East is it better than Quiet Nights from GL Pease ? Wish you a lot of good pipetobaccos !! Xavier.
Hello Xavier! Thank you so much for taking the time! Yeah...that's quite a difficult question...well... I really like the QN from GL Pease...but (without direct comparison) I would think, that the Star of the East is someway smoother...and a bit sweeter...but my memory can be wrong about that...have to go back to the QN first... Take care, my friend! Hope, you are well! Mark
I enjoyed your story about your grandfather and after the war. I love to hear about people family history. One day it would be cool to have a chat over there in Germany with you over a nice pipe. Cheers !
Hello Phil! Thanks a lot for taking the time! And ...yeah ...these were horrible times...but also for million other people around the globe... let's hope, we don't face something like that ever again... Take care! Be well! Mark
JCP SMOKE0230 Hi. I'm from Turkey and we have the best meerschaum pipes in the world. I can suggest you this company. www.yunarmeerschaum.com Yunar is the one of the best meerschum master in Turkey. You would better take a look.
Thanks for taking the time! And ...yeah...I suggest, you take a look at the Ali Birinci video on the channel...he's my favorite carver right now... Take care! Be well! Mark
Being a POW is a hard thing to go through. At least he lived and was able to return home. My mothers family was transported to their murder at Treblinka on one of those trains. So I have to wonder how many people and families did your grandfather help to murder by transporting them to the extermination camps and did he transport and help to murder my family.
Yeah... I hear you...and you certainly have a point. My grandfather was a social democrat and against the war and the regime... but not a hero...just a simple man like so many others. And the railroad, he worked for, was part of an evil system... no doubt. So... I got you... Thanks for taking the time! Hope, you're well! Mark
Thanks for taking the time, my friend! Well...if I might say...quite unusual for a pipe smoker from Macedonia... :-) Hope, you're fine, my friend! Take care! Mark
Hmmmmm, how old (should be a date code on the bottom of the tin) is the tin? Latakia definitely loses its "power" as it ages. I had a tin of Samuel Gawith commonwealth mixture (50/50 Latakia/Virginia) that was rather weak in the Latakia department as well, but it had 6 years of age on it.
...yeah...sorry...forgot to mention that... the tin has about one year of age...I think, the right time, to open a C&D...since they like to pack their tobaccos rather a bit "fresh"... But you are right...had a tin of Durbar...13 years old...the Latakia was round and smooth ... same as a peated Whisky of the same age would be too... Take care! Be well! Mark
Makes no difference. A meerschaum doesn't leave a 'ghost' (aftertaste from the tobacco smoked in it) because you clean it proper after each time you smoke it, leaving no 'cake', so you can switch tobaccos from aros to latakias and back no problem.
Just use a kleenex or paper towel, wrap it around your finger, and clean the inside of the bowl after each time youve used it. Many people just scrub it with the pipe cleaner, but that is how I do it, and I smoke a lot of meerschaum. The inside will still turn black from heat and juices, thats okay, just make sure there is no cake build up whatsoever. Enjoy your meerschaum my friend!
Amazing. My grandfather, who was an American, with a German heritage, was also in the war in Germany, and also was reported to be dead to my grandmother back here in Louisiana. It was almost a year later before he just showed up, back at home, my grandmother and family thinking he was dead the whole time... Heathen Hammer Mark do you use cattle catchers on the front of your trains in Europe??

I'll hit you soon on voxer, my friend...my cottage is about to be ready for "moving in" soon... :-) But from Wednesday on, I'll be in Wolfenbüttel for two weeks.. We gonna talk soon!
Take care! Hope, you are well!

God bless!
Thank you so much for that! Really appreciated!
Take care! And God bless!

love trains and pipes, so this one was a big hit with me! Star of the East is a favorite of mine
Mark

Thanks for the picture ...and your message...let's talk soon, my friend!
Mark
I recently opened a tin of this from like 090220 I believe. To my disappointment I noticed fibers all over the inner packaging. Upon inspecting the flakes themselves there was chunks of fibrous rope or twine pressed right in with the flake! Had to toss the tin and get a replacement of a different blend sent seeing they only had that batch in stock.
thank you for telling that story! Was really interesting to listen to.
Thanks for that! Much appreciated!
Take care!
Mark
Cool locomotive, and story. C&D Star of the East is a great tobacco. One of my go to blends.
Thanks a lot for that, my friend!

Thanks again for sharing your travels and, as always,
Best Regards, John
Mark
I'm re-watching this video. It's yet another good one. What pipe is that? It's a beautiful one.
thanks
Thank you!
And take care!
Mark
I enjoyed your story about your grandfather and after the war. I love to hear about people family history. One day it would be cool to have a chat over there in Germany with you over a nice pipe. Cheers !
Sounded like very hard times for your grand parents. Very sorry to hear.
Hello Phil!
Thanks a lot for taking the time! And ...yeah ...these were horrible times...but also for million other people around the globe... let's hope, we don't face something like that ever again...
Take care! Be well!
Mark
I agree!
Beautiful pipe, what brand and model is that ?
-Cheers from Sweden
Well...as I said...it's a Rattrays morta will a custom built stem...
Thanks for taking the time! And take care!

Love the video bud. I know you love meerschaum pipes. Can you suggest a good company for a guy on a 150 US dollar budget
Mark
I realy dont like Latakia same as you Mark...great video and greetings from Macedonia!!!
Thanks for taking the time, my friend! Well...if I might say...quite unusual for a pipe smoker from Macedonia... :-)
Hope, you're fine, my friend! Take care!
Mark
Уважаемый друг,подскажи где можно купить такую трубку? спасибо
Now that's how you smoke a pipe!
Thanks for that!
Take care!
Mark
Hmmmmm, how old (should be a date code on the bottom of the tin) is the tin? Latakia definitely loses its "power" as it ages. I had a tin of Samuel Gawith commonwealth mixture (50/50 Latakia/Virginia) that was rather weak in the Latakia department as well, but it had
6 years of age on it.
...yeah...sorry...forgot to mention that... the tin has about one year of age...I think, the right time, to open a C&D...since they like to pack their tobaccos rather a bit "fresh"... But you are right...had a tin of Durbar...13 years old...the Latakia was round and smooth ... same as a peated Whisky of the same age would be too...
Take care! Be well!
Mark
osiyo
say i jest got me a merscham pipe and being new to pipe i wus wondering wich is better to smowk from a merscham pipe armatiks or. english?
Makes no difference. A meerschaum doesn't leave a 'ghost' (aftertaste from the tobacco smoked in it) because you clean it proper after each time you smoke it, leaving no 'cake', so you can switch tobaccos from aros to latakias and back no problem.
hay thanks
Absolutely agree on that! And...thanks for watching!
Take care!
Mark
Just use a kleenex or paper towel, wrap it around your finger, and clean the inside of the bowl after each time youve used it. Many people just scrub it with the pipe cleaner, but that is how I do it, and I smoke a lot of meerschaum. The inside will still turn black from heat and juices, thats okay, just make sure there is no cake build up whatsoever. Enjoy your meerschaum my friend!
thank you
