Today I reacted to The Poet and the Pendulum by Nightwish from the Dark Passion Play album. This is my first time hearing this band and song. I don't even know what genre this is! I was SO pleasantly surprised. Incredible talent. I think you'll enjoy my jaw hitting the floor in this reaction.

To balance this song, I would recommend you listen to a newer piece of theirs, from their latest album "Human :||: Nature". The song is called "How's The Heart?". There are two videos for it, one the official "lyric" video featuring the full band, and the other a stripped-down version featuring just vocals and acoustic guitar. It speaks of supporting one another when support is most desperately needed.

For someone who never listened to Nightwish before or knew the history behind this song, you are remarkably perceptive to the meaning! I usually recommend that folks do a little research into the backstory before listening to this song, but you are already on the right track. I'd still recommend reading into the story a little more just for your own benefit, and you might pick up on more things throughout the song, but truly, excellent reaction and interpretation.

Hello Amanda Webster ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wembley Arena in 2015, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of a wild audience.
Also a recent sad news - these days Marco Hietala, the bass player and male singer of the band, announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band, together with the stellar vocals of our Dutch metal queen, Floor Jansen. This is also a rare thing, to start your Nightwish personal journey with this heavy emotional song. Even you didn't knew the back-story, you understood / felt very well the meaning. Subscribed for that. Hope you'll continue on this path.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
Hoping you'll continue this journey with us, I'll drop here a list of songs (with links) with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory):

To understand the story you need to know the backstory.
Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts.
    1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano (Guy Elliot). "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter. The white lands of Emphatica is a place in Stephen Kings "Dark Tower" series.
    2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt. "My home was there and then, those meadows of heaven. Adventure filled days one with every smiling face" The bands beginning, before the troubles started.
3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part.
The spoken words are read by a boy named Tom Williams. Both him and Guy Elliot were members of Reigate St Mary's Choir School.
    4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision. He was ripped apart, even the Finnish prime minister had an opinion.
    5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time.
Tuomas was inspired by the short story "The pit and the pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe when he wrote this masterpiece.
The first words are "The end", the last words are "The beginning". It's the end of an era and the start of a new.
When you see Marko and Emppu close to Tuomas at the end it's a thing they have thet started when this song was new. Tuomas feelings where still raw so they supported him at the end of the song. Tuomas had chosen to have Anettes song cut out of the mix in his earpiece at the shows. This was 11 years after the events, so he's mostly over it now.

Maybe start with 'Doki Doki Morning' official it's their first ever song recorded over 10 years ago and it's super cute they're like 12. But awesome. Generally this is not suggested as a first song by nightwish and it is recommended to know the backstory. You did incredibly well without that background. It is about the suicide of Tuomas the keyboard player and composer. I think you missed it by pausing at the wrong moment. It happens at 17:53 in your video, although the last part is how his loved ones, mother and father, prevented him from actually doing it. Somebody will explain the full background but this song is written after him having to fire the first singer and his childhood friend from the band. Nightwish was already a big band in Finland , so everybody, even the prime minister, was commenting on this break up, possibly without fully understanding the background. Tuomas felt bullied and depressed as a result. The mood swings in the song mirror those in real life as do the ebb and flow and the swinging of the pendulum. IMHO this song should be broadcasted every year on a day we think about mental health, depression and bullying. Not sure if that day exists but if it doesn't, we should have one and play this song.

@@MentalAmanda Hi Amanda , this is a song we recommend a reactor do once they have a decent amount of NW reactions behind them and some knowledge on the back story as this is possibly the most personal & emotional song for the composer/keyboardist Tuomas, it is however a masterpiece, but you perceived it pretty well, but we would have told you there is a lyric version, the beginning is not opera just a boy soprano singing in English,
there are several numbered sections to this piece denoting the different stages of his depression, The song that is legendary & the most reacted to on YT ever is Ghost Love Score - Wacken 2013 ,Floor Jansen you will find out is one of the most talented and versatile female singers of our time,
Welcome aboard the NW & Floor Journey :
NW is Symphonic Metal (also called Beautiful Metal )the Symphonic elements are from the London Philharmonic composed by the keyboardist Tuomas, be warned it's an addiction, :) Wacken 2013 is perfection ,a seminal event where every song is GOLD & better than the originals ,82,000 in attendance for Nightwish, considering Floor Jansen (who is the 3rd,current and final vocalist) had only been 10months in singing with the band at this point, but few singers and I have seen many live are this great live, and yet the song GLS -( 3rd from the end of a 15 song set) is but a small taste of what this band and singer has to experience.GLS is most reacted to song on YT right now and possibly ever, some vocal coach reactors have over 2.5 Million views,so the fan base is massive, very passionate & active on YT.
I suggest staying with this Wacken 2013 before moving on to the other outstanding concerts, yes NW is best Live, then there is Floor's continued vocal versatility on the Dutch tv show
Beste Zangers 2019 on YT ,she sings Shallow,Phantom of The Opera,Vilja Lied & more ,then her
recent YT covers of Alone-Heart,Adagio-Lara Fabian,AveMaria,Oblivion, etc.
so much to discover ,so welcome aboard this NW journey,it's an exceptional ride. cheers
****from this concert : while GLS is the ultimate example of the symphonic metal ,some of these other songs are a bit heavier & melodic.

This song was written by Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player and metal mozart of Nightwish. It was his way of dealing with the grief over splitting with the original vocalist of Nightwish. There are a lot of people who can and im sure will explain this better than I can, but you understood a lot of the emotions without even knowing the background, which was impressive to say the least. Nightwish is an amazing band, they never disappoint.

I'm sure by now you already know the history of the band and that Tuomas composes most of the music, but in this song specifically, there is a part in the song that really speaks to the musical geniusness of Tuomas. From the line where it says "I only have 3 minutes and counting" to the physical movement he makes where he kills himself in the song, is exactly 3 minutes. I hope you have enjoyed getting to know this band.

Wow, what a great reaction. This song is written (as almost every Nightwish song) by the keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen after the band fired their first singer and childhood friend Tarja Turunen, with whom Tuomas founded the band in 1996. After a show in 2005 she was given an open letter. The whole band signed the letter but Tuomas was blamed for the firing of Tarja and he got a lot of backlash from fans. This put him in a deep depression and he had suicidal thoughts back then, but he decided to write a song about it and rather kill himself in the song than to do it in real life. The last part is called "Mother and Father" and relates to Tuomas' time with his parents where he found comfort and the lines are what his mother said to him. You can see him singing along with the singer (Floor Jansen, 3rd singer of te band who joined them in 2012). In the past he often told the tech to cut off the vocals from his in-ear monitors because it was to hard for him to listen (that changed over time, and he said in an interview that he is not that person anymore, but they still don't perform the song very often).
I have seen many reactions to this song where the reactor didn't get the deep meaning behind it, because she/he got into this song blind and whithout checking the backstory before reacting, even when the Nightwish fans told them. Usually it is suggested to wait and listen to other NW songs first to get a feeling for the band. I am so glad that you got the meaning and atmosphere of the song right from the first notes/lines. I am suffering from depression myself (for different reasons) and this song makes me cry every time. Sometimes I think that you have to be in a similar situation like Tuomas was, to really "feel" this song, even if you don't know the whole story behind it. I feel sorry that you had to make such an expierience and have been at a such a severe point in your life.
It is a very bold move to start your Nightwish journey with the most impactful song in their catalog. But you did really well. Most of the reactors start with "Ghost Love Score" from Wacken Open Air 2013 (a metal festival where Nightwish were headliners that year), which is epic too in a different way and shows (part of) the vocal skills of Floor (she had one year of opera training and several years of musical theater training at the conservaturium and worked as a vocal coach for a couple of years).
As a next reaction I would suggest something different like "Storytime", "Everdream", "Song of myself" or "Amaranth" from Wacken Open Air 2013. Actually you could pick any song from that Wacken 2013 show. The whole concert is awesome and when someone invents time travel, my first trip would be back to 2013 so I can expierience that concert live and not only via a recording.
Oh, a little warning: the Nightwish army will be here soon and our general (commander, chief communication officer) Gabriel Bardac will provide you some more great recommendations and background info about the band in his welcome speech. Subbed to follow your Nightwish journey.

Floor Jansen, with this song, was instrumental in saving my life. A deep downward swing of my own pendulum was making me wish for the water to take me to the deep. I related to this song on a deep level and I felt every drum beat and every strum of the guitar; but it was Floor at the end singing the words of Tuomases mother and father which I heard as my own mother singing to me that communicated powerfully to my pained soul. She sings as an angel in that last part, truly. Here are the words for that part:
    "Be still, my son
    You're home
Oh when did you become so cold?
The blade will keep on descending
All you need is to feel my love

Nightwish army from Italy reporting from duty. You really nailed the meaning of this song, not knowing the backstory. Personally, this song helped me through one of the most terrible times of my life after being sexually assaulted by someone I knew and trusted. Today helping my best friend getting out of a terrible situation, it brings back some terrible memories so i still listen to this masterpiece to help cope when I get overwhelmed.
On a more positive note, i'm really glad you found this amazing band, this is symphonic metal (i know, sounds like a dichotomy but it works as you can see) and Nightwish is the front face of this genre. If you want to you can react to the holy trinity of NW videos, this is not where most people start but who cares. The other two songs are Ghost love score live at Wacken and Greatest show on earth (either the official video or live at Tampere are both amazing shows). The first one is a 9-minute song and the other one is their longest so far as a 20-minute song and I promise both of them will feel like a couple of minutes. Amazing reaction. You have never heard of the band or the story behind this song, but still you felt all the emotions. Before you relisten to it I want to tell you that this is the most personal song of Tuomas (keyboard player and the main composer of the band) where he literally kills himself in the song and talks about his thoughts and emotions prior to it and then his parents' words after it. This song saved him from severe depression and real suicide. In short, that's the story behind the song.
For me, personally, this is the best song ever composed and I have attended hundreds of suicides along with it during my worst days. I can say it kinda saved me too, although the pain never really goes away. I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but this is probably Tuomas Holopainen's (the keyboardist) most emotional song. He's the one that had the idea of Nightwish, brought together the original lineup, and started the whole thing. He writes about 90% of the songs, and composes 99.9% of them. He is a one in a million, one in ten million composer, because he has a sixth sense about exactly what a song needs to have the most impact. Sometimes it's a soft, ballad like structure (Ever Dream, many parts of this Song, even a touch of jazz with Slow, Love, Slow) or a raging, galloping, thundering, angry track (like Romanticide or Ghost River). He literally speaks every language in the world with the notes that flow from his pen.
This song is extremely painful for Tuomas to play, because in October of 2005, after the End Of An Era concert in Finland, the original singer for the band, Tarja Turunen, was dismissed from the band due to her growing a bit of a diva complex, disagreements about the music, the fact that she was saying things like "I don't need Nightwish, but this band is nothing without me," and the like. Tuomas and Tarja grew up best of friends, so it literally tore Tuomas' heart into tiny pieces to have to dismiss one of his best friends. It also led to some extremely dark days for Tuomas, and one night, he had the thought that the damage that had been done, that he had been forced to perform, was too much and for about a minute, he actually considered ways to end his life.
This is why, throughout the song, you will see Emppu (guitarist) go over to chat with Tuomas, to make sure he knows he's supported and if they need to stop the song, they can. At the end, around 20:45 in your reaction above, you'll see Marko join Emppu up on the keyboard riser, as that last stanza is the most emotionally difficult for Tuomas, and it's to show their loyalty and support for him.
That's the important part said, what is below is a copy-paste from an email I sent a reactor that wanted to know a bit more indepth what all the lyrics meant:
    -------------------------------------------------
...Tuomas immediately channeled that depression, sadness, anger, even rage, into the music. He also knew he needed to figuratively cut the strings between "old" Nightwish and "new" Nightwish, and the only way he could do that was to "die." The first movement, with the soprano singing, "White Lands of Empathica" is the figurative perfection before the split, which happens when the first real attack note hits, leading into movement two, "Home." Movement II also has one of the most misunderstood lyrics that Tuomas has ever written, "Forgive me, I have but two faces/One for the world, and one for God, save me!"
Most people take it as face value that you bear your soul to god, but shield yourself from others. What it is intended to mean, as per Tuomas himself, is to describe how he felt in the time between the dismissal and his writing the song, because he had to keep a professional face on, had to keep searching for a new singer, keep the band going, all that, while also feeling this unbearable pain in his heart for what he felt was a betrayal of one of his best friends, being forced to dismiss her, and if those two lines don't describe depression in a nutshell, there are no better words.
Movement III is "The Pacific," which is the calm that settled over Tuomas after he got Movement II out of his system. This is his realization that it was okay to kill off the part of himself that was unable to let go of the pain and sorrow of firing his friend. The specific lines about that in the lyrics are "Tuck me in / Beneath the blue / Beneath the pain / Beneath the rain." At the end of Movement III is the monologue of the "boy I had been" (figuratively), and there are a ton of metaphors in that monologue.
Tuomas' absolute genius shines through here too, because if you take a stopwatch and press the start button the instant the line "Now I only have three minutes and counting" ends, Movement IV (titled Dark Passion Play) is the shortest movement, which is the chaotic, angry release of energy that is Tuomas figuratively building himself up to "kill himself." If you stop the stopwatch when the music stops suddenly after "a pen and 1000 pages of erased text," it is precisely three minutes elapsed time.
Movement V is "Mother and Father," and is Tuomas reflecting back on his life after he has "died." The first stanza is about himself "Be still, my son/you're home." Where the song goes extremely emotional is with the second stanza of the verse, "Search for beauty, find your shore," because that is Tuomas literally and figuratively encouraging Tarja to continue on her chosen path and excel at it. In the video, you'll see him lean his head back and sing "Try to save them all, bleed no more" with the pain visible in his face, because this is him saying that he couldn't save the first lineup of the band, and "In the end/I will always love you" is him speaking to Tarja as if they were face to face again.
    ------------------------------------------------
As others have said, all in all, you picked up on the background of the song really well, without knowing the full details of it before hand. There is a reason it is no longer played live, as that part of both Tuomas' life, and Nightwish's history, is truly and completely buried. It also took quite a few years of silence, but Tuomas and Tarja did make up, and have resumed being friends, but to avoid any issues, they both agreed that they'd never collaborate professionally again.

I'm not sure if the following detail is at all accurate (it came from a comment on a different reaction video), but if anybody can correct me it sounds like you can. Marko's first harsh vocal line is "Second robber to the right of Christ," most clearly refers to the second of the two criminals crucified with Christ, with the first being on his left. Linguistically "second to the right" can also be used to indicate a position, but there was only one person on the right side of Jesus at the cruxifiction. However, if you look at da Vinci's "Last Supper" painting, the second person to the right of Christ is Judas. It's enough of a stretch that I doubt it's what Thuomas meant, but I find the idea interesting enough to be worth mentioning.

There is a whole backstory on this song that is worth checking out. Others will fill you in. Floor Jansen is the third and present singer of the Symphonic Metal band Nightwish and widely considered the best and most versatile female singer of our time. As I am a Flooraholic from Utrecht, The Netherlands, here is some background information on our Dutch Valkyrie Queen. She joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. They made a very beautiful music video out of this. 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, such as from full operatic to serious growls in seconds. The songs 'Disdain' and 'Wild Card' are good examples. September 2012 came the call from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the American Tour as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour ('Please learn the setlist in 48 hours'). The lyrics of the songs of Nightwish are very poetic and the music as a whole is challenging, but Floor pulled it off and she stayed for the whole world tour, culminating in the iconic Wacken 2013 Open Air festival. It was obvious that the combination Nightwish and Floor Jansen was made in Walhalla, so she became a permanent member of the band in 2013 as the relationship with Annette and the band was strained even before she became ill. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp' for a couple of years, but it became clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so Revamp disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died' is a must see. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on CZcams. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe, watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa'. And to see her in full opera mode watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered CZcams in the last year and uploaded many interesting videos on her channel. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses and so much more. Also her 'Fan Friday' videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of the presents she left there. Floorgasm alert! Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band 'Sabaton'); daughter Freja (just turned 4 years); a horse and pony; a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this.

I would have never recommended this song as your introduction to Nightwish, the depth and meaning behind it is better understood after experiencing a couple of their other compositions, but you handled it with grace and intelligence. You've earned my subscription and like. Others have done a wonderful job of explaining the meaning of the song and the turmoil Tuomas suffered. As a writer myself, I know the methodology of writing your pain into poetry to purge it from your soul. You were so credibly good at detecting this and I applaud you for your perception. I understand this is not a common reaction channel and you had already 114 reactions from the Nightwish fans giving so much background nollidge, it is breathtaking. My suggestion is related to the maincore of your channel mental health and in the world of metal and music/art there a lot of sensitive people and stories. In her series Floor Finds she talks with Tom Englund from the Swedish band Evergrey about the relationship between mental health and music. It helped a lot of people and stunningly they posted it shortly after the shocking news (for all fans) that Marco, the bassist and great vocalist stepped out of the band. Floor stated later that this was not a reaction on that news. It would have bin the perfect reaction imo. For me Floor is a rolemodel. First her history, the sadbacks, the emotinal roallercoaster. In lots of interviews she talks about it and that helped a lot of people not feeling so alone and out of place. Just read the reactions as i did a lot. It surely connected and touched a lot in me.

Welcome to the wonderful world, and very deep rabbit hole that is Nightwish (albeit from a very different angle!!)
This song is about Tuomas, the keyboard player and founding member, and the backlash and fallout he faced after the band sacked their first singer and this song was ultimately how he dealt with the pressure - he commits suicide in the song to save himself from doing it in real life. At 6:50 it was so interesting to hear you talk about your mom's strength and being there as the last part of the song (where they all start sitting in front of the drum kit) reflects the words that Tuomas's parents said to him and at the end you can see Marko and Emppu go over to him to check he's okay. He very often didn't have the vocal feed in his earpieces as it was to painful for him to hear Floor sing.
Just to add - the betrayal line is interesting as the reason they ultimately sacked the original singer was because of her husband and the pressure he was exerting on her and the band. There is a song on the album Dark Passion Play called "Master Passion Greed" which is a direct barb at him and his actions and "Bye Bye Beautiful" is directed at Tarja who was sacked.

great reaction! this song has so many layers. not just the lyrics, but also the melodies of the various parts describe the emotions the writer had going through this, and of course the vocalist Floor's powerful emotions she portrays in the various parts. most Nightwish songs also come with captions that you can turn on, makes it easier to follow along with the lyrics :)

Hello Amanda. I know this vid is 2 yrs old, but I just found you. real quick, I'm a 58yr old Nana/metal head. All though I hate labels & I'm so much more than that. This song is my DAILY anthem to keep going through the pain. I'm a 7 time grateful failure at suicide. I can't be good at everything. Somehow I connected to you & your show of real reaction & emotions to this song. I will actually pray for peace , love & joy in your life. Not just say the words & don't bend the knee. Isn't it funny how we can be worlds apart in age, but still come together as woman struggling to find our way

Welcome to the Nightwish family. For someone who doesn't know the backstory of this song, you are extremely on point. The story behind this song is that Tuomas the keyboard player is the founder and composer of Nightwish. They had 2 singers previous to Floor (the singer in this video). But the song is about the first singer Tarja Turunen. They were friends and after many years she decided to leave the band, in a middle of a tour, but she became very shallow, obsessed with money fame, and many other things (you can find online the public letter that the Nightwish members wrote to her before kicking her off the band). Tuomas loved her very much and it was painful for him to let her go, but she became unbearable not only to him but to the rest of the members of the band. So they decided to let her go. They gave her a letter after their last show called "End of an Era". After that, Tuomas was judged very harshly by the media and the fans for letting her go, so he became depressed, almost to suicide. But instead of committing suicide, he wrote this song. So he put his feelings on paper. Us fans we understand what he felt during this rough time. But you were very close to the story because he mentioned that the song is inspired by Edgar Allen Poe. So thank you for reacting

This is Symphonic Metal and this was Tuomas' (keyboard, komposer) suizid song. He couldn't take his own life, so he killed himself on stage. This song deals with depression and his way out. The last lines Floor Jansen sang were the words Tuomas got from his parents.
And the associated stages. That's why the song changes the mood several times.

Perhaps a dual betrayal comes into play in this song. The band felt betrayed by Tarja, the original Nightwish singer, when her fiancee tried to take control over the band, and then there was the betrayal felt by many fans towards the band when they decided to part ways with Tarja.

Absolutely, I think thats my absolute favorite song/performance of theirs, esp after seeing the 2018 live performance which just got me on a whooole different level than the others ya know lol just from Floor’s insane ability to make u FEEL every single note and emotion, plus obv those vocals duh lol plus this one was all about the visuals for me, it was the only time I can remember Emppu delivering such an intense emotional solo like that ya know, just WOW he looked soo amazing and so intense I really loved to see that side of him too!!
So yea I really hope she does watch that live performance as well, I think it brings such emotion that anyone can feel, doesn’t matter where u are in life, EVERYONE CAN BENEFIT FROM IT!!

Very nice interpretation of the song, you were pretty right about all the things. This song is about, and written by, Tuomas Holopainen (keyboardist), theres alot of backstory about this song you can look up and im sure people in the comments will write it down. The female singer is called Floor Jansen and she is an amazing artist as you have seen. The genre they are playing is called symphonic metal.

Thank you. Beautiful reaction. I've never seen a better one by someone with absolutely no knowledge of Nightwish or the band's history (and I've seen quite a few). Tuomas (the keyboardist and songwriter) used this song as a catharsis...an outlet for the pain and suicidal thoughts he was feeling after firing Tarja from the band. Seen in that light, it is a beautiful way to give outlet to those feelings, process them, and begin again. Floor, as Tuomas' "voice" in the song, never fails to bring me to tears with her empathetic storytelling...and the way the band gathers around Tuomas at the end is touching and makes me proud to be a Nightwish supporter. If you do choose to react to more Nightwish, enjoy your journey.

I first heard it without knowing the background, and the mystery gripped me, so I HAD to dig deeper. Then learning the background was to experience the song again for the first time.
Honestly one of my favorite reactions to this (I’ve watched many), because you had no idea what you were getting into, and also how appropriate it is to the mental health topic.
