Korean MMO Mabinogi had a take on leveling and classes that really inspired me. Skills and spells were class themed, and as you skilled into them using points from level up, they got stronger multiplicatively. However, there was very little enforcement on learnable skills. you could "multiclass" freely in this way, and indeed there were interesting ways to stack multipliers and combo abilities across these classes as well as within them. To enable deep leveling of these various skills and spells, levelups were made "infinite" via rebirth system, where you could reset your level (and all stats gained thru levelup) to 1, keeping only your skill ranks and ability points, which did themselves grant some stats and combat ability.
I feel like not a lot of people caught that game, it was unfortunately overshadowed by it's big brother, Maplestory. Nexon has been bought out, but technically it's still online. You can see it now. But it's.. quite dated.
There were very few games that had that structure and it's honestly my favorite type of game - freedom to customize.
The only other (no longer existing) game would have been the megaten Tensei mmo
why does Riot mess with there formula which is to copy a game of a popular genre and make it better.(Eg. valorant, league, tft)
Thats assuming Riot doesn't think the small changes they've made to those other games are a "significant evolution". They genuinely might think Valorant is a "significant evolution" of tactical shooters because they added character kits to the CS model. For all we know they're "significant evolution" of the MMO genre might be a lot simpler than what you're thinking it will be.
@@Khanstipated I can totally see their experimental ideas for what an MMO should be getting cut down into WoW clone that plays like Smite.

Valorant is worse than cs.
As a boomer, i would've been more than ok with World of Runeterra
they cant make anything truly original hence they had to cancel the plans, they are waiting for someone to actually innovate so they can reskin it
As much as I love the world of Runeterra, I do kind of share the same opinion of Riot, lol.
LoL was DOTA, TFT was Auto Chess, LoR was Hearthstone (though probably their most unique game), Valorant was CounterStrike, and there's probably more lmao.
There's a difference between "nothing new under the sun" and "let me copy your homework" that Riot doesn't seem to understand.
Fun knock-offs tho.
Also Lord of The Rings Online, when it was in it's prime. Damn..

Yeah but let's be real, playing an MMO for 1 hour a day is not nearly enough to get enjoyment out of it. These games are huge timesinks and you're lucky if that's enough to have fun with.

Yes, The game is already out. It is called Final Fantasy XIV Online. 😅 No, for real. Since TERA closed, this is peak mmo.
ffxiv had to be rebuilt from the ground up, because it was a massive failure at launch. this is basically the same but in the development process

The largest MMO for the last 20 years uses tab targeting. Its classic servers alone have a total player count that could populate a small country.
