Summary:
1. Every sequence should have a beginning a middle and an end - 3 to 5 shots
2. Every shot should either be instilling a question in the viewers mind, or it should be answering questions. The questions are who, what, why?
3. End with a strong resolution to the sequence.
4. Show don’t tell, leave a little mystery, a bit of something that the viewer can figure out themselves.

We’re teaching a video course at a university this semester, and you better believe we’re gonna show this to our students. Great break down, pal!
I know because I’m enrolled in the video course
Wait a minute, what are you guys doing here?
Show, don’t tell. Probably one of the best advise for any kind of visual storytelling. Thanks for this video, I learnt something very important today 🤝❤️
not just visual, any storytelling really
I love it! Quote of the day: every shot needs to answer a question or ask a question… Actually, that goes for every scene, and every act, and if you get really Noble, The whole film asks a question
I enjoyed the last part. Making daily vlogs is hard, but i hope to accomplish two things from it - consistency, and skill. I want to be a better story teller. Thanks man.
Making daily videos is a fantastic way to achieve just that! Get it!
Nice name. 😆
@@alexasuncion7718 haha salamat!
@@JesseDriftwood what cameras and lenses did you shoot this on?
@@FTMuisikTV FX3 20mm 1.8 for A roll I guess
This sequence looked like an HBO doc, awesome stuff man.
We (other youtubers) are sooo lucky to have you in this space. More tutorials please 🙏
And thank you for sharing this information with the rest of us 👊
Thank you dude! Much appreciated!
I second that.
Fantastic video Jesse! Love learning from your vids! Also so excited for this STUDIO!!
I've never framed filming sequences as proposing a question for the audience and its genius, honestly feel like an idiot for not seeing that. Again an awesome video man!
Out of the sea of content around storytelling this is hands down the best one. The clear lessons, the Hitchcock, the ability to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk. Superb 👌
Thanks Pat!
Learned so much from this video 💯! One of your best ones yet! Can’t wait to start implementing this! Stop spoon-feeding and leave space for your audience to wonder. Create intrigue! So much gold here 🤯 Seriously Thank You man!!!
This content is solid gold... instructive and inspirational at the same time. I love how you lead with your own example, break it down with humor and personality and keep the audience watching. Don't mind me... gonna just sit down and watch this again!
I just love how clean your stuff looks.
Best Tutorial ever made in history
Definitely appreciate the TIME & DEDICATION you bring to the table for the industry of video creation this is another GIANT of a video I would say CLEARLY communicates what needs to be done as it relates to creating better videos and actually TELLING A STORY without actually telling the story. Great Job Jesse. I've been a follower since idk....... I started following you lol
Thanks, really helping me understand more about story telling ive been so obsessed with what gear to get but now im just gonna use what ever and try get a good story. thanks
I love this, Jesse!
There is a lot of information provided on your video for sequencing. I also love that you mentioned the time it took to make this video, as you were not expecting it to take that long. That is an inside look into storytelling and is relevant to many newcomers, which is learning to understand that filming the video sequences can take a lot of time and not get discouraged by it.
I struggle with this a lot. I never started my channel for many reasons, but one of them is timing and sequencing. I have what you call an archive of videos I have recorded in the past two years waiting for me to build up enough courage and confidence to put my stuff out there for the world to see. Maybe one day I'll use this format to tell my story, so for now, ill do what I have always done with videos like yours and add them to my video library.
Thank you, Jesse!
Dragging myself out of a creative rut this year, and your videos always help get my gears turning. Big thanks to you and the rest of the team!
Each individual shot in this video was just absolutely wonderful
Jesse puts soooooo much work into every video, I can't even imagine all the moving lights around, positioning cameras, framing, etc etc etc.... And the scripting, because even the video about storytelling has storytelling in it... Incredible!
Two JD videos in 3 days? What a gift haha you're awesome man
Watched this twice, so good Jesse! Great tips and great sequences to show them!
When you said "Hi Dave!" at 5:33, I thought you were greeting me and just broke the fourth wall.
All Daves are Dave.
I have never watched something on CZcams without blinking and breathing. So good! ❤
Loved this, will remember to implement it when I’m filming again!
Thanks for sharing these tips Jesse! Your videos are so inspiring.
Great tips on the sequences. Can't wait to see that new studio build out progression, looks like it has sweet possibilities
I see your comments a lot, you’re cool minded person, you’re friends with anyone… I just subbed 👍
Such a great way to break down this process. To me, you are truly one of the best out there doing this Jesse. I always get excited when I see you have something new up. Best of luck on the buildout of the new space.
really loved this. Thank you !
Great video. Loved it
your sequences are on another level. And I feel like you explain everything so much better than other youtubers.....and simultaneously demonstrate it by showing.
I absolutely loved this video man! And I loved those clips of Alfred Hitchcock sprinkled in every now and then. I seriously still don’t understand why you don’t have a million subscribers yet! GRRRRR!
This was some great advice. I knew about the importance of presenting questions to the viewer to help move the piece along, but I forgot hoe important that is at the level of the sequence. What a great lesson, especially how you showed it within the video. Thanks so much.
Love learning from this guy!! Thank YOU!
I really love everything you’re doing Jesse. Can’t wait if ever you’re gonna make an actual shortfilm
Jesse really loving the content so far this year! I definitely learned something, thanks for sharing. 😊
The way structure your videos is so great
Holy cow, this is a whole new level of storytelling skill. The show don’t tell as it’s best.
Thank you Jesse! This tutorial on sequences gave me a few more tricks to add to my quiver of visual story telling techniques.
Hands down - my favourite CZcamsr right now!
Watching your videos is always a treat.
Thanks for always inspiring! It's been fun watching you and your channel grow!
Cut cut cut, yes sometimes too much info or being spoon-fed insults the viewer intelligence, I so agree with that.
It’s a tricky balance to find between saying too much and not saying enough!
This is undoubtedly your best video 🙂 It explains and applies the theory so, so well 😊 What a joy to watch.
Great video! Solid information! Thanks for making this!
This was super helpful. Thank you!
I love the way this was crafted. Keep up the good work Jesse!
Can't wait for the studio, I appreciate the tips! Always looking to improve and your videos are always helpful.
Man, this video was packed with so many helpful tips and insights. Thank you!
I can't wait for new studio, so excited
Brilliantly broken down. I know all of this stuff from years of studying it, but it's SO easy to forget when you're actually out creating content. Easier said than done I suppose. So this video was a great reminder to keep it top of mind!
Thank you for this jessie. Love it when you make content on storytelling.
I really enjoyed this video! You used story telling to teach me how to tell better stories. Thanks for breaking it down in a way that is easy to understand. It is easy to identify footage that you like, but it is much less easy to identify why you like it. Definitely going to apply what I learned today! Great video!
This video is so good. It’s so meta too. Sequences inside of sequences talking about the importance of sequences.
Such a cool idea for a studio. Have thought about doing this, excited to see the end product
very valuable stuff here! appreciate it Jesse🙌🏾
This was wonderful to watch. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
I love your videos because I always feel like I'm learning something new and valuable from such a genuine, fun dude!! Thank you, Jesse!!
Great video Jesse! Love how you play with those sequences to enhance your stories. Good luck on the build! Looking forward to follow the process. Looks like an awesome space to create the studio of your dreams. 🤙
This might be one of the best videos i have watched on youtube...pure gold
Okay - so i have to say i bought your moment course, i just recently bought Chris Hau's course as well. i didn't realize what i was looking for in both courses was this video. I don't know how to explain it but this so perfectly explains why you make a sequence not how. I feel like so many creators teach you how to make a sequence - hell i've even seen that Hitchcock clip million times. This was so well done that this 9 minute video could be sold like a course.
This is the thorough breakdown I’ve been waiting for
The whole concept of making each sequence (or shot) either ask a question or answer one that was asked earlier is a huge light bulb for me - thanks, man! 👍🏻
Jesse your the best storyteller, your sequences are unbelievable thanks so much for the inspiration
Absolutely nailing it,,,, hope it gets better for me nice hearing from you bro✊🏻love watching it
Thank your for the video, Jesse! The last final tip was so good 👍
Lots of takeaways. Thank you for continuing to inspire✨
Subbed. Great stuff my friend!! Exactly what I needed to level up. Thank You!!!!
The King of storytelling! 👏Always look forward to your videos!
Brilliant. Thank you for putting this into words. I think one of your best videos to date. Looking forward to the new adventure in the new studio.
Brilliant, so apt and concise.
You are an Angel, I’ve been bothered about this and thanks 🙏
Thank you for this💜 I love the perspective 🤟🏽
You provide such awesome inspiration and value through these videos!
More of this! Well done.
Excited to see the final look of the space!!
Thank you for this Jesse! I think you have some of the best sequences I've ever watched.
Expert level storytelling. Each clip seems to match perfectly with the dialogue. I appreciate so much about this video beyond the subject matter. Kudos!
Everyone, get up from your seat, raise your hands and give Jesse Driftwood an standing ovation!👏👏👏
This was a mini masterclass! Thanks for the tips!
I learned a lot, thanks Jesse! Loved this one. So many tips packed in.
This will greatly improve my next videos and a bunch of thanks to you man you deserved more!
You make few videos but they are always super useful, thank you Jesse!
VERY inspiring and so beautifully made. I'm going to try and use those tips in my videos. Would love to implement more storytelling too.
Amazing as always! Haven’t commented in a while. But I have always loved what Jesse does. Always watching, always learning. Thank you 🙏
So abstract, yet so powerful.
love this so much! I learned a lot. thanks Jessie! can't wait to implement these teachings :)
always love a good video about story telling!
Thank you!
Love this. 100% agree.
This was extremely informative and helpful!
Jesse will never not be my favourite CZcamsr and inspiration
Thanks for sharing Jesse! Really valuable insight into the process and has really helped me think about how I’m approaching storytelling through sequences! 🤙🤙
So good my dude, thanks for sharpening my creative ability.🖤
100% Motivated. Thank you Jesse.
You are literally are literal genius Jesse!
Great content as always - you are one of the few who really understands storytelling and teaching it well at the same time on CZcams. IMO 💪🏽
So sick dude, i loveit... amazing video jess!!!
Awesome Jesse! Super helpful good sir, thank you!
Hey Jesse, I just wanted to say that I think you’re making great videos right now and I’ve really been enjoying your recent stuff. Can’t wait to see what you guys do with the new studio setup.
