  • On September 12, 2023, I was set up in Jay, Maine, just after 8 a.m. to catch L054 operating west on the Rumford Branch. With the closure of the Jay mill, the yard is only utilized as a crew base for the L054 turn crew, which is where the crew would go on duty this day. After picking up their train just east of Jay, they would head west with 5 units and 51 cars. Holding at the west yard limits for track crews, they would finally get on the move around 10:45 a.m. I would be able to chase as far as North Leeds before cutting off for other obligations, where they would pick up two hoppers from the Decosters feed silos. Later in the day, I would be able to reconnect with the job at Leeds Junction as they made their handoff to L053- with no eastbound cars, L054 had nothing to pick up from this job, and would go back east as light power. This large lashup is the result of an extra Sunday L052 that operated between Portland and Jay the previous weekend with 509-5963-305; running to Rumford and back on Monday, they would pick up the weekday power of 5958-307 at Rumford before returning west. I hope you enjoy this interesting lashup on the Rumford Branch!

Nice to see and hear 305 still around now that 306 is out of service.
Nice that a B40 is assigned to Rumford for now!

Logan let’s all say it together “The train is RUPO not L054 any CSX symbol is inferior to the Pan Am/Guilford system”.

If you think about it L054 is still technically the same as RUPO in all physical attributes, but more predictable. Therefore it is better.

Why is the EOT Device on the front of the Loco @14:36?

It's a turn job so they have an EOT on the front and rear. Easier to leave it on the lead unit since that is the rear of the train going east again.
