@@jonesrmj not sure why you say that DXB is not facing congestion issues like Heathrow? In fact before the pandemic, DXB is similarly congested. There are a few things that elevates or worsen DXB situation...
      1) Emirates huge fleet of A380 means they are able to carry much more passengers in and out of the airport with less trips or flights departure. That is why we see DXB is able to handle 85M pax in 2019 vs LHR 81M.
      2) DXB 2 runway is too close to each other thus it does not allow for simultaneous landing or departure. This further limits the aircraft movements of the airport.
      3) DXB resorted to 24hrs operation filling up all the wee hours slots just to reduce the congestion. Unlike LHR, which still limits aircraft movements between 11pm-5am.
      4) to make things worse, day time temperature in summer occasionally goes beyond an acceptable range and further limits the aircraft take off schedules.
      5) expansion of LCC fly dubai further cannibalised the already limited runway slots. Fly dubai was later moved to DWC to allow for Emirates expansion as the next phases of DWC was further delayed. In its current stage, DWC could not handle the enormous operations and traffic brought around by Emirates.
      6) Emirates faces fierce competition from rival Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways. Emirates which was slot restricted could only operate trunk routes using larger aircraft to ensure steady growth while rivals are able to experiment with smaller aircraft flying to secondary destinations bypassing major hubs. This is detrimental to the airline as it heavily dependent on transit passengers and it's inability to offer direct flights saw Emirates struggled in generating new revenue and open new markets.
      7) Dubai is not such a big tourist city after all. Foreign airlines are less interested to offer flights to Dubai as they face steep pricing competition from Emirates. Instead they struck code sharing agreement with Emirates to operate the flights thus cutting down their risk and also allow for Emirates to fill up their A380 with 600 passengers each flight.
So in short DXB is really heavily congested like Heathrow but due to certain circumstances it did not badly inflate the slot cost at DXB unlike LHR. DWC is a much needed airport for Emirates and other tenants there even after the global pandemic crippling the aviation industry.

@@chingweixion621 I did mention that there's congestion, but I didn't mention congestion problems as much for DXB because statistically, it’s not as bad compared to Heathrow. Look at the landing slot costs in Heathrow vs Dubai. Yes some of the things you said are true, but it doesn’t mean DXB is as congested as LHR.

Yeah, the phases have slowed down cos realistically Emirates itself has said it has peaked, even before the pandemic. In other words, even before Covid, DXB had largely reached the busiest it was gonna get, and it handled all that traffic pretty well, so where was the urgent need for a much larger airport at huge cost when the new expectation was that it wasn't really needed?
Covid has hit Dubai's traffic really hard, it basically fell 80% in 2020 (the only major airports hit worse are in the Far East/SE Asia), at the very least that's likely to take 2/3 years to even reach 2018/19 levels which DXB could handle, so the need for a larger Dubai hub has been pushed out even further, I'm not sure it'll even get past the 1st 2 phases now.
We'll have to see how fast aviation comes back, but an 80% fall (World average fall was 64%) is just unheard-of, no one has any idea just how this is gonna look over the next 3/4 years, but for an example, after the 2008 Financial Crisis, it took aviation 2 years to get back to 2007/08 levels in a lot of places, and those drops weren't even remotely close to 65-80% we've seen in this Pandemic.

I dont ever see this airport being built out completely. First, it is going to take years for demand to come back. Second, the tall and beautiful skyline's buildings have a whole lot of empty space in them. Third aircraft technology with the 787 and A350 aircraft are facilitating non-stop flights that will be able to by-pass this hub and then add in the new airport in Istanbul which is aggressively courting this market as well. The demand just isnt there, and it isn't going to be there. If they route all cargo through this new airport there is more than enough capacity at the older airport. This would be...like the skyline, more vanity that purpose.

This doesn't really grab me as a must see airport- like most things in the Dubai and Saudi Arabia regions things are being built leaps and bounds as a way to siphoning off the oil money in infrastructure. As a result the country is looking like a modern day NYC...but Dubai doesn't have the population growth to accelerate its planned economic vision and the region is still a hot bed that can erupt any day. But they have the money and they cant really take it with them when they die so they have to invest it and name it in their name.SMH...Royalty and poverty - what a gross reflection of inequality in the 21st century.
