  • Time for another review and "How To" guide by www.scalewarmachines.com.
    This time, we are exploring AK Interactive’s new Real Color Lacquer Paints (and their High Compatibility Thinner).
    These are high-quality, accurate paints with fully researched and sampled colour matching as well as “standards” colour compliance.
    They are lacquer-based which means they need to be handled differently from standard acrylics - which can be easily diluted with water. Also, these are best applied by airbrush, but as you will see, they work perfectly well for some brush painting tasks. Larger areas might encounter problems with brush marks as the paint layers will attack each other due to chemical reactivation. Our test showed that if you are a brush painter and want to cover larger areas, the paint went on better over primer.
    We hope this is useful. If you like the film, please subscribe or give us a Facebook like or a Google plus one below. You can also give us a thumbs up or down or comment which helps the video get traction.

    I love the AK real colors. My new go-to paint if I can find the color. I just tried the new Tamiya lacquers too, and they spray great too. I don't mind the smell of the AK, it is strong, but not pungent like when you spray with Tamiya lacquer thinner. It doesn't cloud up like some lacquers do as well. They brush paint well too over primer. Nice review.

    great tutorial, love these paints as well - working very well if brushpainted on scale figures - no brushmarks and a great finish superior to acrylics to say the least. I switched to this medium

    This paint system for me is the top of the fine scale model making tree. They are the best thing to happen to this hobby since it started way back when!
    AK Interactive have really done their homework with this system and the colours are deadly accurate. This system will really change the way we all paint and for the better. You use less material because the coverage is excellent and it is much more forgiving and can take a lot more punishment with regards to the weathering process than anything else on the market.
    I can't praise this system enough, they are a joy to work with and they leave you feeling, dare I say, a little overwhelmed with the results.
    Great review Scale War Machine and I for one am looking forward to seeing this new and exciting build series to confirm to all those modellers out there who have almost given up on paint and yet another paint brand... 😉👍

      Hi Mr. Clive, can i ask - i saw he used a WATER ACRYLIC PRIMER !!! doesn't the Real Color lacquer attacking the acrylic primer paint ???!!! i saw how synthetic thinners lift off acrylics in a second ! (actually,that's how i cleaned off a bad paint job that i'm not pleased with) - can we use the water soluble acrylic primers such as the Vallejo primers ??? this will make everything simpler, would be great !

    I am now using them for all my military models. They spray nearly exactly like Tamiya [which I thin with Laquer thinner NOT the acrylic thinner]. Only time will tell if they stay nice in the bottle. In all my 40 years of modeling, ONLY Tamiya seems to remain perfect in the bottle no matter how long it sits, that is, so long as you always make the caps tight. They are not as good a deal per oz as Tamiya, but the AK line has a LOT more color choices. You can still custom mix your own colors with Tamiya, but that can be a waste of paint AND time, so that is why I decided to start using the AK Real Color. Thus far, I am very satisfied with them. They spray beautifully and seem to be fairly tough, which I like. Tamiya is so tough, that I usually just use their regular colors for prime coat.

      @@Sentinel-mu4ci I think you can brush paint them if you use a paint retarder. Ak might have one or maybe Tamiya acrylic retarder will work as they are meant for acrylic laquers too. Or you could use some Tamiya laquerthinner retarder type or mr leveling thinner as they both have a retarder in them. Remember to use a respirator.

    Did I miss something? Where is a tape adhesion test? I saw the "Cuticle pusher" ....Tape adhesion for masking in critical.

  • @raffaelepassarelli6444

    Would you say the spraybooth+mask should be both used only when airbrush in use, or also when brush painting?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  Před 4 lety +2

      Ideally in both scenarios, but the danger is the atomised paint through airbrushing. It depends on which brush painting product you are using so it's not really an issue with acrylics for example. It is though if you atomise them and then inhale.

    I bought AK real colors and and airbrush and compressor. I have yet to use the Iwata but is it generally safe to say 50/50 dilution of the AK paints? It's getting cold up here and I don't have a booth to spray in so it will be the garage unfortunately. Will have to spray and pull the parts in the house asap.

      It should work, I tend to find masking film/fluid works better. Also you tend to get more obvious edges with the lacquer paints. Test it on a scrap piece of plastic and see how it comes out.

    Did I miss it, but what kind of pressure and needle are you using in your airbrush?

    • @scalewarmachines
      @scalewarmachines  Před 5 lety +1

      Rarely mention pressure because often use airbrushes with a MAC valve meaning compressor regulator setting is not accurate. Looks like the Iwata Eclipse CS was used with it's 0.35mm needle/nozzle. With that brush 1.5 bar is a good setting on your compressor. May also have used any of our other Iwata brushes, like the HP-CH with MAC valve and HP-TR2- can't really recall. Again go for 1.5 bar.

      @scalewarmachines  Před 5 lety

      No never tried it but that doesn't sound good! Wonder if it's like Tamiya matt varnish and designed more to be added to the paint rather than as a top coat - like an additive to make it matt?

    • @konradalexander7561
      @konradalexander7561 Před 5 lety

      @@scalewarmachines I did some testing and found out that it lacks that additive. Whilst i never tried x86, the x20+flat base in a 7:3 7.5:2.5 ratio makes it dead flat. If its only 9:1 it gives this satin finish. A bit disappointed by ak here because i tried their acrylic glossy and now real color flat varnish and are both very difficult to work with or unusable

      You don't necessarily need primer, most model paints will spray straight over plastic but it may take longer and lose shadow or highlight effects/benefits from a primer coat. If you have brass and resin bits, a primer is a good idea.
