I'm confused. I thought the homeless problem was impossible to deal with and the homeless decided not to use the shelters. Now we know the city can deal with it if the city really decides it's important enough.

Did you even watch the video? They didn't clean up the homeless people. They just moved them a few blocks away from the conference.
As a merchant myself, the reason it is SO hard to control homelessness is because most of the homeless are men, most of them are substance abusers and mentally ill. Free shelter is not something that is easily acceptable for these men. They are SMART enough to know that there is a catch, they have to follow rules and regulations. Which means treatment and meds. They would much rather harass merchants, residents and federal workers than to receive help from city officials. Women and girls are easier to manipulate and put to work which is why we see less of them than men. I know because I am a female merchant who deals with 5150s everyday and YES, I do listen to their side of the story.👍💯

The city basically just "swept the problem under the rug" until the guests leave. It will be back shortly. Then officials lied about it. The city has no intention to provide any long term solutions, they just wanted things to look "petty" during the event.
Of course, after all their boss is only in town for a few days, why so much work to solve the real problem, besides I think they want the problem.
There's something to be said for "sweeping the problem under the rug" all year round. Some things probably should just stay under the rug.
Homelessness, drug markets, prostitution - in truth there's no society in all of history that has eradicated these things conpletely. Generally they are a symptom of a much wider cultural rot that can only really be improved by maintaining the sorts of cultural traditions, customs and expectations that keep people afloat.
But putting that aside, the degree to which such decay is present and visible - it ought to be swept out to the fringes. Allowing these things to be constantly visible and pressing on the whole community all the time is devastating to morale, cohesion, beauty... And it does actually make the problem worse as it just further nudges everybody a little closer to the abyss, a little closer to hell.
The other thing is if through governance it's made more difficult to be a homeless drug addict - less people will do it. Sometimes it's actually good for these people to punish them for being the way they're being. Sometimes real compassion is tough love.
For what it's worth, I have been a heroin junkie before in my life, so it's not like I have no sympathy for these folks. But looking back, I regret how LITTLE shame was dieected at me for the lifestyle I was living. Regular upstanding productive people SHOULD shame those who are just a drain. It's better for everybody. There were way way way too many "services" making it much easier for me to be a 20 year old heroin junkie. Had it been harder to find syringes, harder to find the drugs, harder to find other people living that way, had I been more harshly judged by the normies I did interact with; I'd have probably kicked the habit sooner, or not even sunk so deep into it in the first place. These safe injection sites, needle exchanges, and the tolerance of vagrant encampments are doing more harm than good.

Remember… Kamala says, “when the people vote… they get what they ask for… and in this case… they got what they wanted.” You all vote for people who prioritize others over the safety and well being of tax payers. i remember mine teaching me, in 12th grade, that both your parents had to be citizens of the united states at the time of your birth for you to be considered a natural born citizen. if not, you were still considered a citizen which was the same as a naturalized citizen and you could still run for any office except president.

The homeless were told to leave and if they didn't. they would be arrested for various charges and held in custody. While in custody, they would not be able to use drugs and would suffer from withdrawal. They moved....temporarily.

This reminds me of what Russia and East Germany used to do when foreign dignitaries arrived: usher them through sanitized versions of town, with all the usual detritus hidden away until the dignitaries were gone again. I was born in Soviet Union . In that time we DID NOT have such amount of homeless on the streets. Who ever was drunk on the streets was taken to the police to be detained for 15 days.
Nowadays, in Ukraine during such destructive war you will NOT see homeless and addicts on the streets.

That Cody homeless person has NO BUSINESS living in SF. He is not a resident, he’s just hanging around. People come from all over the US to SF so they can live like bums, do the drugs they want and have no accountability for bills, mortgage, rent, etc. They need tough love. Either clean up or go to Jail then relocated to a more affordable city.
And they get paid (taxpayer money) around $680/mo and get food stamps. Not a bad deal for being a useless clump of cells.

That "tough love" line is absolute bollox. I've worked with these people. Not in SF, but in other parts of CA. It boils down to three types of homeless people:
-Those that had jobs and a normal life, that lost everything
-Those that had mental illness
-Drug addicts that spent themselves beyond poor
The _majority_ of people that I worked with were from the first group. They gradually became members of the second (mentally ill) and third (drug addict) groups as time went on. You can't possibly comprehend the kind of emotional suffering a person goes through when they become homeless, when they were raised better and mentally expected to be better people. "Soul crushing" isn't even close. It's more like, you feel as though you fundamentally failed as a human being. The pain and distress they feel is backed up by how they're treated. "Cattle" comes to mind. Shelters are generally very dangerous or unhealthy. Two of the shelters in the area I worked in, had rampant lice and bedbugs, as well as violence between people that stayed there, and staff that treated them like dirt. Not one of the shelters in my area was free of major issues of some kind.
Gradually, the people from the first group get so ground down and desperate in their mindset, they either go mad and develop mental illness, or turn to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain, or (usually) both. Trying to exist like that, it changes a person not unlike going to prison. It's impossible to regain your footing once you slip that far. You can't get cleaned up and get clean, presentable clothes, a mailing address, or reliable transportation to be able to go back to work - you need a stable residence and some method of transportation for that. Getting a low-end job doesn't help in places like this, when rent is so expensive, either. So, without any way to generate income "the traditional way," these people start turning to panhandling and crime. Food Stamps don't really cover a full month's worth of food to begin with, unless - again - you have a place where you can cook your own food, and be able to store ingredients safely (even then, it's a stretch). There are places that give out food, but quantities are limited and it's first come, first serve. If you miss out, you probably don't have a way to get to the next place giving out free food before time runs out on that meal.
I'm not even going to go in to how homelessness is used by local and state governments to grift. I saw some of it, and I'm aware it happens. But, put simply, money spent on homeless programs generally sees less than ten cents on the dollar spent on the actual homeless people. This is another major issue - the people put in charge of the problem don't want to solve it, lest they work themselves out of a job.
You want to get a head on fixing the homeless problem? _Work to keep the people from the first category, from being homeless in the first place._ The number of pre-existing mentally ill and true drug fiends is fairly low - and I'm talking about those who let those two conditions cause their homelessness. Fix the people from the first category, the homeless situation will probably get reduced by 80% or more over time. Here's a few tricks that would help, if the people that were in charge, actually wanted to fix things:
-All elderly facing homelessness be put in assisted living facilities, period.
-No assistance of any kind to illegal immigrants
-People that are about to lose their homes, who are unemployed, be allowed to move to residential facilities with permanent fixed addresses, and assisted in finding jobs, then allowed to stay at these places until they can obtain their own residence
-Expand the low income housing assistance programs, and remove a few of the Federal rules in place, with vouchers going to those doing the step above. Not free housing, but subsidized, discounted housing - they still pay some of the rent, based on their income, and voucher assistance is based on continuing to build them up.
-Expand the food assistance programs to those trying to avoid homelessness, and those working to come back from homelessness. Remove the rules banning those attending college and vocational training from receiving benefits.
-Greatly expand government subsidies for energy costs, and create some additional programs to help those in danger of becoming homeless, pay their basic bills.
-Make the funding from these programs entirely blind - the recipients of the money in the end (landlords, utilities, grocery stores) should have no idea that these government subsidies are being used by the individual - this to cut down on grift and intentional program abuse by these groups to suck money from the government.
-Either expand public transportation and make it safer, or work with those in danger of being homeless to provide them with needed transportation to and from work.
Some places in the United States are, unfortunately, going to have hard working people on at least some of these programs forever. Costs of living are just too high. However, this helps move the onus from "hand outs" to "hand ups." The government will end up having to help people stay in homes, or get homes, that the people partially pay for. It's never going to get back to a point where it was 60+ years ago, when rent was cheap, utilities were cheap, and food was cheap. There's too many forces driving those prices upwards, while wages remain relatively stagnant. So, we have a choice, as a society: Help people stay in their homes, or in homes period.. or let them become homeless, and every unfortunate person who has some major expense happen suddenly, becomes a victim, and eventually homeless themselves. Far too many families have almost no cash reserve to cover sudden emergencies, and health issues costing insane amounts of money are one of the leading causes. Once they have a disaster, that's it for them - they're homeless and on the streets, and eventually, degenerate into madness and substance abuse to take the pain away.

The city didn't do crap, all those planter boxes on Van Ness are Private, I know, I live near Van Ness & Willow. The Optical building was having issues with glaucoma patients getting confused with tents, so they partnered with other buildings and started getting planters, they cover a few blocks of Van Ness and even run down Eddy where a LOT of the drug dealers were at. Don't give the city ANY credit for this, this is all fed up private citizens and businesses trying to survive. I am glad to see it also, I go jogging every morning at about 4:00 AM and constantly had homeless people getting aggressive with me just as I left my home.

Seriously though: I am sorry that a subset of homeless and/or mentally ill people are bothering you when you simply wish to go for a jog. I suppose you could buy a case of nutrition bars and ask if they want some breakfast? That is not something that many people wish to do though.
I never had problems with homeless people in any significant form, yet then again: I often bought them food and smoked weed with them lol. My decision was definitely risky though. I met a few crazy crackheads on occassion for sure.
So maybe buy a treadmill or go to a gym? House to car to track/gym?
@@py_a_thon 2 days ago a guy shoved me because he was leaning against the entrance to my apartment building smoking a foil, and I asked if he could move.. You are telling me that is totally acceptable behavior because I didn't offer this man a "toll" in the form of breakfast bars to enter MY apartment building... Who says that I can even afford to give away breakfast bars? I was just diagnosed with ALS and can't even work right now, hence trying to run and going to the gym early in the morning in an attempt to keep some nerve function for as long as I possibly can, but the issue is because I am not feeding people when I cant even afford groceries myself.

And yeah: I get it. I wouldn't really want to jog in many places in this world. Also, running through the streets at 4am can seem suspicious sometimes. Last thing you need is a Karen or a cop ruining your day.
Also, I forgot some other perhaps good advice. There should be some jogging clubs you can join. A dozen or more people jogging together at 4am are probably fairly safe, even from the actually dangerous crazy homeless people, instead of just the threat of "that homeless person might be dangerous(yet probably isn't").
Homelessness should be BANNED. There should be more shelters and more programs to help people find jobs and housing. Drug addicts, alcoholics and mentally ill should be admitted to treatment programs where they are cared and provided for. Nobody has a RIGHT to live drunk/drugged and ruin the streets and safety of those who pay taxes and work hard for a living. Homelessness is not for human beings!
Politicians CAN fix these issues IF they want to BUT they don't want to. It's a way to ask for more tax money. 🤬

Seattle did this same thing when it hosted the All Star baseball game this last summer. Looked like shit for a long time and hearing all the same excuses about the homeless, drug addition issues and of course a high spike in crime and boom All Star game comes and like magic the area is clean and repainted. Both cities should be ashamed.
If we could get an army of bureaucrats touring our cities on a constant basis imagine how much cleaner our cities would be.

As we all now know, these problems can be resolved but it has to be something great like APEC, before SF will be forced to clean up their surroundings the garbage is outrageous, the homelessness is rampant, drug addicts everywhere have access to what needles they want, lawlessness causing many retailers to close up shop. That city is an embarrassment to allow drugs and crime to flourish while the taxpayer pays for that mess, I hate the homeless.
True, though, imo, leaders should stop visiting other countries - especially war zones - if all they’re going to do is take photo ops. And why not do the talks over Zoom? Why do pols and elites have to fly everywhere?
Be careful what you wish for. In San Jose, when the homeless are cleared from high visibility areas many times they end up in residential areas. Unhoused people are not going to simply evaporate. It’s better that they be in business districts than unseen just outside where you and your kids lay your heads. You go to and from your house with people outside just laying on the side walk who can watch your routines. Forget about ever getting a package delivered to your house. Water hoses and yards get used as showers when you’re away from home.
They're already in residential areas. The tenderloin/downtown sf is full of residents, children, schools and playgrounds. We're constantly surrounded by trash, drug use, unstable individuals having a drug induced psychosis. Maybe it would get better if these matters encroached on the richer/safer areas, because then there'd be more incentive to make changes. As it stands now, the city is fine with groups of men smoking meth and fentanyl in front of children, harassing residents, local businesses and throwing piles of trash wherever they go.

You're a part of the problem with thinking like that. The issue of homelessness is so incredibly complex due to there being a plethora of issues that got them there in the first place, that dumbing it down to "Why don't you pull up your bootstraps and get a job" narrative is in fact, making the issue worse.
I’m definitely not the guy to make up excuses but living in California is extremely expensive. I was almost homeless once too. I just got lucky that I found a family that allowed me to rent a place in their garage for $700 a month. If I was homeless it would be difficult to get a job and then it can continue to spiral down further from there. Thank goodness that chapter of my life is over.

I know folks see this as “oh look. They can fix the homeless problem. Look what they did here and why won’t they just do this everywhere.” If we were a dictator society, this is what you’re all speaking positive on. I question how many civil liberties they’ve violated in the process of clearing out these streets which will just fill up again. I’m all for getting the homeless off the streets but not at the actions of any executive branch of our governments.
It is not until BIG money and BIG politicians come to talk, and... all of the international press shows up that the problems of homelessness on city streets are addressed/removed. Perhaps every major city block in every major city in California should have a major economic conference. Then... the police, under the direction of the FBI, can finally have justification and cooperation of state and local politicians to act. Granted, this did not solve the homeless problem. It only moved them down the road. How-ev-er, if you move them far enough, they will actually end up in a real campsite with fresh air, clean water, toilet facilities. JUST SAYING...

I have grown up in the SF Bay Area, don't go to SF anymore. It's a shame, was once a fantastic city. I know several friends that have moved out and all that did, loved doing so. I suppose it will hit a boiling point and when it does, will be too late. But heah, Gavin did a great job as Mayor and now he's the 'ol Gov. Maybe we should all think twice before voting next time around. Or pass a bill to actually have Police arrest thieves and burglars and petty crime and re-enforce vagrancy laws. its interesting cause many past news reports were that there was a lot of empty space in the homeless shelters since the homeless didnt want to go to them due to mandatory rules of not allowing them to use drugs. now they needed 300 more beds

If they want to live like this. Designate some land in the middle of no where and let them develop a commune. Once they are out strictly enforce panhandling and sleeping on street rules. Eventually people will get the signal that you can’t be homeless in the city limits. I’m not sure why people want to have the freedom to live like this and why advocacy groups fight to keep people living on the streets it’s the most inhumane thing you could do like feeding stray cats. You are not making their life better you are prolonging misery.

In fact, many of them were living in fairly remote and sparsely populated parts of the city, under freeways and the like. A lot of them preferred to live by their own rules. But the city actually pushed them out of those places and closer and closer to the cities center, which is where they are now, in the most densely populated part of the city.

There are 3 types of homelessness. 1. Drug addicts 2. Mental Illness 3. Lost job or job can't afford a place to live. Now you can only help 1 of the 3 types. The other 2 are beyond helps.
