Is a Mid Engine ExoCar easy to make?

- I wanted to do more ExoCar stuff, and since the car gets heavily modified anyway, why not make this BMW looking ETK 800 into mid engine too. I was going to do a front mid setup, but too many people bugged me about it, so I won't be doing that :P

Mid engine? I mean it’s a pretty good engine, I wouldn’t call it mid
haha I was thinking that whilst writing it :P
@@fillman86Not mid at all lol
Was is supposed to be. "What is mid engine ETK?"
@@FryPanProtogen to be mid engined, or not be mid engined, that is the question
Pretty sure since it’s in between the front and rear suspension it’s considered “mid” engined, even cars with the engine further forward but still just barely behind the front suspension, is mid engine
Edit: I missed the joke
In the words of an engineer I once knew, "We do this not because it is easy, but because we thought it would be easy"
My entire college career as a mechanical engineer has been very much like that lol
If watching some engineers have taught me anything is that they're way too comfortable with the phrase "eh, that should be fine."
Mood
XD hahahahah I love this, and as a result am going to steal it
2:16 I just imagine a pile of 60 transmissions in your driveway just chilling there now.
haha only 2 spare ones
2:44 The green car looks like something I would've built out of Lego when I was 7.
This reminds me of a thought I have been wanting for a while in Beam: a RWD Mid-Engine car, like a porsche or bug, but make it a cheap supercar with a compact layout!
The quintessential Porsche is rear engine, and for that we have the SBR4
As for a bug, the piccolina is fairly analogous
Porsches and bugs are rear-engined
Normally all of your hardware gets moved up front (i.e fuel tank, battery, etc) to place some weight in the front. I kinda skipped through this one and didnt see if you did that or not. But that might help.
I was thinking the same, the car had so little weight in the front,
I also thought that he could make the front suspension a lot more soft
yeah I completely forgot about the fuel tank, but no, most companies don't do that, because if there's a fuel tank rupture, it won't leak the fuel over the cabin.
most supercars will have the fuel tank tucked between the engine and the passenger compartment... don't ask me, it's apparently safer
@@fillman86 it makes sense to set it more inboard out of the line of fire. Im thinking more of porsches. From what i can tell, modern designs of mid engine cars, the cab sits almost on top of the front wheels, and all the amenities sit behind the cockpit. Whereas some cars like porsche, they set stuff like the radiator and fuel tank under the front bonnet to counter balance the engine dangling out of its rear like a furry cosplay buttplug tail.
@@fillman86 Safer... like the Ford Pinto? :P they caught fire because the fuel tank got squished between the rear axle and the rear bumper bar if hit from behind.
26:56 If you put the matching set of the bronze wheels, added 20%ish camber up front, and added 15-25% toe out the front end shouldn’t wonder and that’d fix the front end grip problem
ETK (Exciting & Terrifying Kart)
lol
a weight distribution as close as possible to 50/50 would generally improve handling and stop that crazy understeer.
yeah, but you have to be able to tune the suspension still, and I'm just not very skilled at that stuff
Mr2 seems kind of available in Australia, would be so awesome with a set of proper coil-overs
I can get one with a blown engine for 10k... not budget friendly
Why in the differential code does it say visualPositionRelativeChildren? I'm pretty sure that diffs aren't positioned around where the children are positioned. I have forgotten how to add timestamps, but it is at 11:17 in the video.
hmmm not sure, maybe this is for debugging reasons in the powertrain visualiser?
yeah probably but just a weird way to call it
Because of you I'm making an EXO car but small for my arts class at school! I might want to base it on one that you've made/are making!
digital or physical? man making one from a toy car sounds like fun!
@@fillman86 actually making one physical! Using iron wire, some wood and other materials, soldering it together! If I am happy with the results, I wouldn't mind sharing some pictures! I could make one from a Hot Wheels car but I think that's too small for me to work on 😂
@@monkeyman9105 yeah man, DM me with pics when you're done :)
@@fillman86 will do! I'm excited to continue working on it!
If it doesn't turn in, you can widen your front track a cm of 2-3-5. or narrow the rear track a bit. It will turn in better initially.
you inspired me to start working with blender and coding:)
Thx
oh man modding is a lot of fun :)
I'm a little surprised that you didn't go full cheap and put a FWD in the back.
I did that already with the covet. Transverse just isn't very supercar
„Its like understeering but still wanting to kick out the back“ congrats you made kimis f1 ferrari
This really reminds me of that mid engine Audi quattro project for Group B that the engineers did without asking.
The cars got sadly scrapped :(
But I would have done this the easy way. Take the drivetrain from a AWD ETK, and flip it around.
have the transmission facing forwards and have the drive shaft go back along the engine to the diff? I suppose Lamborghini did it that way in the 70s and 80s
@@fillman86 Rear diff becomes front diff and front diff becomes rear diff. If I remember correctly, the rear has a semi trailing arms, which would mean that the now the front driveshafts would have the capability to handle some turning.
spring rate needs to change as the weight gets lighter also be cool if you could get into the engine stuff in the mod and turn the speed limiter off
Just a heads up, with a welded diff on a car that has a rear weight bias you will not be able to turn.
yep, but I guessed it'd be better than an open diff. The idea was that you'd cut corners to save money where ever you could, and a bmw lsd would be thousands of dollars
huh... as a Volvo guy, I've owned a bunch of 240s, and even had one which shared an engine with the 340 in a 2 year window, the B200K.
And I've never actually known about the transaxle... is that for the Renault powered ones then? with the 1.4 or 1.7?
Though... the 1.4... I think those might have done the DAF thing with the variomatic even in the 340?
the 300 series cars were made by daf, with normal volvo engines, and normal volvo transmissions.
the rear is where things start to get funky haha it has di-deon tube suspension (irs but with leaf springs), and some even came with an exposed belt CVT which is worth a look here on youtube haha
@@fillman86 Yeah, that DAF Variomatic gearbox is hilarious, basically a belt between two cones :P
And as a bonus, it has the same top speed in reverse as forward. XD
But I'm realizing I don't know a lot about the DAF/PRV Volvos... need to fix that I think.
If you do end up doing a car that is front engine, rear transmission like you said near the start of the video, if I remember right the barsto has a torque tube in it you could rip the model form
unfortunately it doesn't, that's just a driveshaft
Why not pull the v8 fwd wendover engine and trans and suspension and move it back and possibly spin it 180 degrees to make a mid engined car? Its what MG did to make the MGF, engine and trans was from the Rover25/mgzr
Moving the fuel cell over the front wheels might help your weight distribution and handling
because I'd already done a transverse mid engine, and didn't want to do another
What of you take a front engine, rwd car, and you swap it around so its a rear engine fwd car?
hey, what app do you use to visualise the engine and body at 4:31?
that's blender
@@fillman86 thanks
00:10 normal US Pepsi and Coke both taste awful because of the High Fructose Corn Syrup in them. Let's hope Coca-Cola doesn't cheap out in the glass versin of their products.
haha and you guys had New Coke and squandered it :P
You can get the Honda beat it’s mid engine or a 987.1 avoid 06
lol the price of those cars is off the scale at the moment! plus they don't tick the other box of having a big v8 or bigger engine
@@fillman86 oh ok 👍
It would be interesting to make a Mid engine 4WD Turbo Covet Rally.
I love that you basically just shit absolutely fantastic ideas😂
haha thanks, I don't feel like I've ever struggled for ideas
This is the result of a BMW having an identity crisis between a front engine BMW, and a rear engine Porsche, but it then later decided it was going to become an ExoCar.
this is mid engine, so it'd be more like a boxer or cayman, not what porsche is particularly known for, but I see what you mean :)
Mid engined T Series (gotta use the same suspension, engine, and must use 5 unaltered body parts/fender and hood parts)
Sure. The vehicle might be a few seconds faster than a normal ETK car, but it sure does look cool heh heh 😅
agreed!
you should add weight into the front, by adding the gas tank to the front to help balance the weight more.
for safety reasons, all mid engine super cars have the fuel tank between the engine and cockpit, but looking at this car, safety doesn’t seem to be a huge concern haha
@@fillman86 Well, At the same time, Porsches have front fuel tanks. Both the 911 and the 718
@@raphaelrodrigues1645 I was specific to say supercars and not sports cars. Where if you look at the Carrera GT you'll see that it's in the middle
@@fillman86 makes sense. Although the 911 kind of goes too much over the edge of sports cars.
@@raphaelrodrigues1645 there's arguments to be made, but if the rear engine flat 6 was enough, then why would they make the carrera gt?
realy good video
thanks, I'm surprised you were able to watch it all in 10 minutes haha
This one is nuts! Can you make a... Pikes peak AWD Covet?
The SBR4 has a transaxle. Btw can transaxles have a low high range box in Beam? Ive tried so many times to add it and it didnt work
unfortunately I was trying to go for mass produced and cheap, but that one is more like a Porsche part, and would cost a fair chunk of change
Any transmission on Beam with a transfercase can get a rangebox. You'd only need to change the transfercase.
@@fillman86 Actually, thanks to VW, transaxles like the SBR4's are quite common, since they were put on A LOT of FWD VWs and Audis. Also, Subaru makes transaxles too
@@raphaelrodrigues1645 It always didnt work with a transfer case
@@wojtec4011 man, it's really not hard to implement. The herdest par would be make it 4WD. If RWD or AWD is good enough, in 5 minutes you can add a rangebox to the SBR4's Transfercase
For once it's not the american car that has crippling understeer, maybe try an open diff and see what that does? Since the wheels WANT to slip because the torque wants to go somewhere, try an open diff to see if that lets you turn.
open diffs suffer from their own issues :/ but I think it'd help mid corner, then hurt you on corner exit (which is arguably much worse)
try messing around with the tow and stiffness, and get more weight to the front of the car. mid engine cars are always a had full to tune. not as hard as rear engines though haha
Also not sure but i think you had your front wheels to far in,. as in the track width
oh didnt you set the diff to bed welded?? that will not help in high speed corning.
I didn't know you was going to say that at the end.. I am more of a tunner of cars in automation but if you was to put a lsd on it for me then send my a link I dopnt mind giving it ago. maybe a good video idea for me.
Can you do this with the d series I have a engine I want to put in an exo car
you can if you want :) the pre-runner is basically already that
A summary: he spends a lot of time making a mid engined car, is then surprised that the mid engine car he made does mid engine car things and then blames the bad lap time on the car being "slow" and not him sliding everywhere and playing on a keyboard, which is the equivalent of doing surgery on a grape with a chainsaw while extremely drunk. Great vid tho
haha I try to make it more about the journey than the destination, but not everyone watches things the same way
and I used a controller from thrustmaster that has a mini wheel on it. If I could afford to replace my sim wheel, I'd use it a lot more :/ but I'm a broke boy (not the mention that some people do successful speed runs with mouse and keyboard... somehow)
@@fillman86 Yeah the throttle just looked very on and off, and on a lightweight high power jittery car like this, thats even worse than usual haha
One day Fill will learn to put the same wheels/tires front and back, one day...
did my editor cut out that part? or did you skip ahead? haha
I couldn't find the right wheels that were wider on the rear, so instead of going fully random, I went with a look similar to the 787B's wheels
@@fillman86 I watched it whole, just bugged me a bit to see the wide wheels at the back with the skinner wheels at the front, especially when you had grip issues using wider wheels at the front would have surely helped in that regard ;)
Still thinking about the škoda Felicia
What if you continue in like an exo series and next is an exo truck
lol with how this underperformed, I won't be doing one for a while
Now make it twin-engined 😂
unfortunately there's some drivetrain limitations built into beamng
@@fillman86 fair, although I have seen it happen on the Mad Max twin-cover mod, you just can’t add anything to the engines in the part selector
@@Kownterfiet1997 some people have made custom lua controller files, but I haven't seen a seamless one yet... and I don't have that kind of skill
oh and most are faked second engines, dunno about that one though
@@fillman86 fair that makes sense
Not putting the gas tank in the front kinda triggered me😂
oh bugger, I completely forgot about the fuel tank!!
you should make another lowrider truck but use parts from the lowrider car
Why video no in 480, i gotta watch 16 bit filman
lol that's random, the video only just finished uploading, so maybe that has something to do with it
Champagne tastes with mauby pockets lol
I know champagne, but I don't know what the other one is?
@@fillman86 a popular drink in the Caribbean
@@ke1tecX ah, fair enough
10:47 I've never heard someone pronounce cache like that (it's pronounced cash, like money)
probably a regional dialect thing
@@fillman86 I suppose so. I do live in America, where everything has to be done different from the rest of the world.

pepsi is in germany as expensive as coca-cola :´)
we got „cola“ here. like the cola is just called cola.. germany is weird xd
i wanna correct myself for all the germans here.
pepsi is ALMOST as expensive IF u search in the right markets.
here coke is almost the same, only costing about 10% more. It was mostly for the joke because I'm guessing most people don't get LA ice :P
you could have grafted a legran rear independent suspension!
I did consider that, but I didn't want to make another transverse mid engine
What the heck Ferrari is that on the left at 0:36?? A 488 with an aero kit?
That is the famous Ferrari Png
@@fillman86 lmao
What if Pessima Coupe but actually good?
welded diff really doesnt help with cornering. open diff in corners is better than welded.
sure, but that is not without it's own problems too
sometimes too much toe in on the rear is not great
yeah, I'm stuck between understeer mid corner, and power oversteer on corner exit haha
i just found out why ... you left the welded diff in the back so it wants to drift mid corner or dosent want to turn in hahah@@fillman86
@@arnofleury5929 that's because I wanted to keep it "budget" and an LSD can cost thousands of dollars
@@fillman86 yeah but most cheap cars come with open diff ...In my book for track purposes open diff is better than a welded one 😅😂
@@arnofleury5929 tbh I don't have a lot of experience with this specific comparison, so I'll differ to you
i have 2 transaxles that i can GUARANTEE have less strength than your ones
both are for 60s to 70s volkwagen beetles and can be blown out by a clutch dump with 100hp
lol fair enough, they aren't "weak", but even the smallest turbo or mini supercharger mod and they'll shatter 2nd gear
Make Porsche 911 rear engine rwd it's easy. The AWD is not tho.
