  • Usually, the stretch of beach from Torrey Pines State Beach to Black's Beach is one continuous strip of sand, but late last week, a bluff just south of the Torrey Pines Glider Port failed; the slide was so giant it split the beaches in two.

I used to run on that beach in the 1970s. I remember some times at high tide that the surf was hitting the bottom of the bluff. In addition you could sometimes see water seeping out of the sides of the cliff in areas where there was housing (really expensive housing!) relatively close to the cliff. We knew then that the stability was questionable. It's a little sad as I remember being in that area, especially alone on Sunday mornings, as a reallly beautiful sanctuary. I very seldom saw more than two or three people once you got half a mile from the Torry Pines parking lot.

Take a walk along a few of California's beautiful beaches anywhere between border with Oregon at the North with Oregon, and the border at the South with Mexico. On most beaches with cliffs you will see they consist of loose soil ("dirt") sand, gravel, pebbles, and boulders ---> Unconsolidated soil, not particularly resistant to gravity, or erosion by wind & runoff from precipitation...

This is southern California, where hills slide in the winter with great regularity. Those bluffs are made of rock chunks, sand and clay. It absorbs water til it can no longer bear the weight and then it slides. Happens all over down there. And when it rains, it RAINS! I remember freeway underpasses in San Diego with four or five feet of water in them. And people would try to drive thru. The old saying is true - don't build your house on sand. And try to be smarter than water.

A lot of the footage I have seen of the collapse happening appears to have happened during lower tide. At that point there was still plenty of distance from the base of that collapse out to the water's edge. In footage shown here, the tide is higher and that clear beach stretch is covered with surf. Visitors must stay aware of Tide levels and times as well as keeping an eye on the cliffs. Incoming tide can cut them off from a safe retreat if more collapse occurs.

I've been flying over these cliffs for many years from the nearby glider park. The big expensive homes near the edge of the cliffs use a lot of irrigation for palm trees and lush green gardens. When flying close to the cliffs I can see where this water is seeping out between layers of rock, obviously weakening the cliffs. One house has a large swimming pool near a vertical cliff. It's likely there will be more large dramatic slides in this area.
