Not necessarily. It’s the soil that’s the problem. In my country you have this type of soil and nobody builds houses there. However, if it solid rock where you have to blast and get hammers to dig foundation, is perfectly safe. Building on a cliff side with clay and sand soil, now that is crazy.
IMO - If California is so concerned about the environment why allow houses to perched on the edge of a cliff? That is so unintelligent.
It's California.
The entire state of California and people who waste money on places like this aren’t really related. This stupid question at the end is dumb. It California’s problem. It’s going to be a waste of litigation between them and insurance claims at some point.

I was looking for this comment 😂😂😂
It won't fall into the ocean. After it's condemned, the owner will have to pay to have it torn down and removed. This is nothing new in SoCal. As soon as it's gone, they'll build another one a little further back from the edge of the cliff - which will continue to erode.
Isn’t that rubbing salt in injury
I would never choose a view over the safety of my family .
What a view! Now, they are even closer to the ocean.
Now you are definitely an optimist!
@@maryegarcia2432 Nah, they are the ones that seem to have more optimism than pessimism about their oceanfront property, now that more of their already small area around the home is even smaller, and closer to crumbling and tumbling down to water.
The homes are nice, but that's extremely too close for my comfort being that the home is near a cliff/hillside, and it's already known history and (high) possibilities of more landslides.
But they knew the risks. That's why the property/home insurance companies wouldn't risk providing coverage(s).
So why should anyone else have optimism for the homes/property? Again, they took the risks for isolation, exclusivity, and for the oceanview scenery - on and near a cliff.
I cant believe they said it probably wont happen again 😅😂. There is a 100% probability it will happen again.
🤣
My husband and I have walked along the rocks directly underneath that A-frame house and have always looked up marveled that it's survived collapse all these years. You can walk along the cliff side and literally break off chunks of crumbling rocks with very little effort. Such a collapse of this magnitude does not surprise me.
Generally, if you have enough money for one mansion, you have enough money for at least another one.
Oh no! Not the million dollar mansions!! 😱
Why does the American taxpayer have to pick up these messes and pay for it? Shouldn’t the engineer that approved these houses have to sit down and answer some questions. It’s pretty obvious there’s some corruption going on here.
Its a the federally subsidized storm and flood insurance. They pay way under what lets say someone that crashes their car every year would expect to pay. They pay as if they have never been in an accident.
Exactly!
Taxpayers don’t pay for any damage that occurs to those private homes unless there is some fault by the city/town or county.
People who lost their homes recently in the PV area who were not covered by their insurance were were the beneficiaries of different crowdfunding support efforts.
They were not getting any public money.

Solidarity with the cliff
Their homes are heavy, therefore the state should bring a lawsuit against the buyers and builders for building and buying, knowing full well one day They would cause more pollution in the ocean.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that building in this area is hazardous at best.
Builds house on an unstable cliff... cliff does unstable cliff things... "Oh no, how could this happen? "
What on earth would you build a home on the edge of a cliff next to the ocean.

El Nino and/or La Nina both cause some major changes. I've heard we are in La Nina now. Not "climate change " El Nino or La Nina happens almost every year.
Well, they wanted an ocean view. Pretty soon they’ll be in it.
O k.
Soon they’ll be dining in their brand new submersible mansions.
We've known for decades that hills near the ocean are unstable. Yet we still see them building on them. San Clemente Beach has had signs telling people not to stand on the edge of cliffs because the sandstone is not stable - these signs have been there for decades. We've had these problems up and down the coast for years. And I'm getting tired of hearing this is climate change. It's not. Southern California has her wet years that slowly become dry years and then again return to wet years. When I was growing up, we saw Malibu flooding badly for a set of 5 or so years, and each year, the residents acted like that each year was a surprise. What the problem really is? Poor planning. You don't build on historically unstable hills and in flood zones. You fix what's been eroding, and you build for the wet years and fires. And as erosion happens, you build new ditches to divert the water better and shore up the hills that are falling. You don't wait until the areas have eroded and flood more often due to geological changes and then blame climate change because you decided it wasn't worth fixing.
This is erosion over time. I would like to see older pictures depicting what these cliffs looked like when they moved in. Pretty sure these had plenty of land then.
Think of it this way: The coast is in a constant state of erosion. This is a known fact. So those who purchased homes on the cliff with the beautiful view, knew going in that it is a temporary home. In fact, these homes should be non-insurable. Owners should be forced to pay cash for the home or show proof of self-insurance. It's a temporary, beautiful view, then it's gone! Get over it...
Cliffs erode. Who doesn't understand that? Life lesson by Mother Nature.
There's an article out that this is going to be a reoccurring problem throughout the whole damn state. It has nothing to do with climate change.
Definitely God's nature and not climate change like they always claim as they did here. Idiots lol
But ABC told us it's due to climate change!
especially since the evil helped nature along !
Evidently all those who BUILD on a cliff!!!!!! But surely if they have enough money it CAN’T happen!!!!!!!! Lol
I did tile work in LA from 1990-'94. '93/'94 were great years. '93; fires & mudslides. '94; earthquake. We worked on 5 homes 3 times each in Malibu. The idiots rebuilt in the same spot each time.
Same things happen in wildfire areas in Northern California. It's just a matter of time when they'll get burned out again and lose everything.. it's insanity
Consider my genius state of Louisiana or better yet Florida, it floods repeatedly but Cajuns just build it back to the same specs.
I would love to see a pic of these pics when first built, for comparison.
2.5 miles away from cliff and water , and to be safer 5 miles away make a walk trail to the edge and water ,and you must build the homes foundation like the bridges foundation on water for super strength.
Same in Washington State. They wonder why with all the rain. They're homes just slide down into the puget sound
These houses were never supposed to be placed in the location where they are. Mother Nature is fighting back. EIR would not allow for the construction of these structures in these locations without major payoff to board of supervisors for approval and permits
