Additional info: The best way to detect HCM is through an echocardiogram; Not all cats with HCM develop serious symptoms; Sadly, HCM can't be prevented; Overweight individuals might struggle more if affected; Also, please keep in mind I am not a veterinarian, discuss with one if you're concerned about HCM;
And the last year I have taken my cat to five different veterinarians not one of them diagnosed my 16-year-old made cocoon with any kind of heart disease as a matter of fact 5 weeks before he was diagnosed with it enlarged heart the last that he seen what blood work ultrasounds x-rays he said his heart was strong and healthy although he did not know why he had fluid in his abdomen so it doesn't matter if you get yearly checkups or not it could come on suddenly I lost my beautiful baby unexpectedly
My 13 week old kitten died on Wednesday night from HMC. He hadn’t eaten through the day possibly due to the heat, he sat in out cat box and didn’t want to get out, maybe that was a sign he needed to go to the vets. It was sudden death and suddden and we’re all shocked. He was fine through out the day, he was in the living room with my dad and the next minute his legs gave way, coughing like he was chocking, his lungs full of fluid, crapped him self and was taken to the 24hr vets. My parents believe he had lost consciousness in the car. The vets did the best they could but unfortunately his lungs were to full and he died. Can’t believe it. Now we’re getting all the kittens checked to make sure. This HMC is ab asshole and is genetic. Kittens from 3 months can have this without even knowing… I miss him soo much. 😢😿😭💔

I’m so sorry for the loss of your young kitten. I just lost my cat Bebe on Sunday morning. It was sudden and unexpected. She was just under 4 years old. She just collapsed and died on the spot. I miss her so much…
My 13 month old kitten also all of the sudden started breathing really hard and being lethargic and not eating his treats which was REALLY weird.. since hes a foodie. Thabkfully we caught it before any sidden death happened but hes in a really bad shape still and i have a 900€ bill to pay :((

We had a cat die several years ago from HCM, though I didn't know it at the time. He had a blood clot block the femoral artery and caused paralysis in both of his hind legs. Despite getting him to the vet immediately, he passed away the next day. It was so unexpected. He was active, and seemingly healthy until he wasn't and by that time it was too late to save him.
My beloved cat died from this 4years ago. He was sick a few months. During lockdown so I couldn’t get help or visit the vet. He was only able to eat liquid food and tried so hard to accomplish being affectionate. Finally the vet visit was a total shock. He was dying so we let him go. He was a ginger moggy. Aged 12

My bf's 6 month old kitten gets the heart echo tomorrow because they heard murmur in the heartbeat when they did a regular checkup before the castration that was supposed to happen.
I think that even if he has hcm or another heart condition, that we're lucky that we found out because he was about to get neutered and not because he got a heart attack.
We bought one of our cats from another breeder last year (pure British Shorthair), the cat was born around January of 2021. Only about a few weeks ago we got to hear that our cat has HCM and that he could only live for a few more weeks at last. The breeder did not tell us about this so we basically cannot treat this anymore.

Just do your yearly health checks. Cats like Maine Coons can have a genetic test to see if they have it since they are more prone to it. Aaand, she just mentioned that.

My 9 month old cat has just been diagnosed with this after suddenly falling very ill. Even though U have the highest premium package of I surface that covers up to £15,000 a year its still not enough. He has been in hospital now for 3 days and the bill is already over £10,000. We are looking ar roughly £19,000 by the time he will be ready to come home then £300 a month just for his meds, £600 a month for blood tests and scans every 2 weeks. I don't know what I'm going to do as we haven't got that money and there was no higher insurance package than the one I have. We've been told he will likely have a few weeks to months based on how advanced it is. He had regular 3 monthly vet visits and has never had a heart murmur or irregular or fast hearth rythrm so nobody could of known and I guess this is why some refer to it as the silent killer as they can have apsalutly no clinical signs and suddenly die.
My 4 year old Torti named Bebe just collapsed and died from this 2 days ago. Had no idea she had HCM the blood clot must’ve went to her brain and shut her completely down. She was running around the house playing up till that point. Then just collapsed and died.
What cat should I get? I have to go to school 5 days a week, school being 6 hours from 12 am to 6 pm and I also am a bit lazy. I dont want to have a lot of maintenance. I also want it to be a lap cat, and also relaxed. It also should not be too expensive since my family does not have a lot of money. I am also in an area where the closest vet is a 15 minute drive.
There are also NO pet stores and shelters near my area At All (probably 3 hour drive to nearest shelter but I dont know)

What cat breed is least likely to get HCM? and/or DCM?
None to be honest as cats are so unregulated with breeding that it's impossible to know. Although a moggy will most likely have a decreased risk.
How about a mix of Siamese and Persian are they still prone to hcm?

Two of my Scottish folds brothers apparently had it since birth, one of them died at 11 months old and another one is given maximum a year to live on the medication :( never getting a purebred cat ever…my mom got two regular kittens for free and they never had any health issues for the past 11 years..
So when you said purebred, it means the parents of your cat are both scottish fold??

You cannot prevent it unfortunately, you can just treat it. Also, it is "prevented" by not allowing affected individuals to breed, but this will only help in future kittens
