Even the widespread technological advancement, quickly shared information, increasing public awareness, UN bodies and social media’s relentless activism are still struggling to combat this “colonial hegemony”. I am sure the Kanaks don't mind sharing as long as they rule there ancestral Lands like all Native Indigenous people of Australia Canada America New Zealand Hawaii New Caledonia to name a few. Its all about resources and power.
But if you look at the countries mentioned, they're under the commonwealth except America. There's a massive difference between being colonized by the British and the French. Britain has a way better record of respecting the rights of the indigenous people and coming to agreements and making peace. More of a you scratch my back I'll scratch yours relationship but France is just straight up refusing to give in all the time. Imo as a New Zealander looking at now today I'm so glad we were colonized by the British and noone else.

It's complicated. France so not force any country to stay with them. Many African countries have decided to cut ties with France. France economy do not depends only of new Caledonia or it's French colonies. French colonies also benefits of French aid and military back up and loans and products and skills. People must stop looking at France as an enemy but rather as a business partner in which they can benefit. Yes it's true new Caledonia has a lot of nickel but even if France leave new Caledonia they will be replaced by China or Russia who will also exploit them even more. New Caledonia should take advantage of being under a french regime the seven largest economy in the world in which they can benefits if they are smart instead of burning everything and acting like kids.
