When it seemed Jimmy Page was exhausted and had nothing left to give , he turned to the blues.
*PLEASE* do CODA! Believe it or not it is very important. These aren't just partial numbers or bits and pieces. After Bonzo had passed, the band still owed Atlantic one more album in their contract, so Jimmy, while still grieving Bonzo's death, had the heartbreaking task of going through what was left of the band's music to assemble something. He found some material and altered some early live performances so he could call it "new" - which, considering the circumstances, I think he can be forgiven for. He had Robert and JPJ come in and add whatever else was necessary to finish. In a strange way, Jimmy came full circle; when the Yardbirds broke up, they were still contracted for some performance dates so when Jimmy assembled his new band of Jones, Bonham, and Plant, he called them the "New Yardbirds" so he could play those dates and not be in breach of contract. After Bonzo's death, the band owed an album and again, it was up to Jimmy to tie the loose ends together for completion. CODA has some interesting musical sketches on it and is worthy of respect and a listen.
I have seen quite a few reactors skip CODA. Its beautiful 40 minute journey through everything they do best.
I'm guessing Bonzo's Montreux and Poor Tom will please the gentlemen of Airplay Beats.
Plus there are some kickass songs on that album! Even Zeppelin’s secondary songs are amazing
@@Dan-zq5wt Yeah, I'd put "Darlene" and "Walter's Walk" up against the Pepsi Challenge of their other stuff any day. Plus the 1970 live/soundcheck version of "I can't quit you, baby" is incendiary, and of course the video is the same number, so they could watch that! I also agree with chrishayes that the two "Bonzo-centric" tracks he mentioned would find a fan in La, at least.
@@joescott8877 I agree! Page’s riff on Walter’s Walk is scorching and that outro just shows off that super powerful rhythm section. I don’t care that Plants vocals and lyrics were superimposed later - it just kicks all kinds of ass.
According to the coroner’s inquest, Bonham consumed over 40 shots of vodka.
He then passed out, and choked to death on his own vomit.
So, at the time of his death he wasn’t sick in the classical sense (like cancer, etc), but he was struggling with his alcohol addiction.
Very sad, but I don’t think that a lot of people were surprised when it happened.
Such a loss.
I lost 2 husbands to alcohol addiction. I still feel the loss of each one. Without the alcohol, they were amazing men, as was Jon Bonham. RIP❤
Richard Cole, their long time tour manager and Peter Grant protege, was surprised when Bonham died, he thought for sure it was Page when he heard someone passed in the band. Bonham was in a bad way when they recorded this album and the alcohol was affecting his playing at the very end while on tour and he actually collapsed at one point. He was dead less than two years after recording this last studio album, but many assumed it was going to be Page because of his thin and frail appearance.
John Paul Jones and Benji Lefevre (Bonzo’s assistant) found him dead. I can only imagine how that must’ve affected them

This last song on their last album has all the elements of a Led Zeppelin song - intense vocals and Robert lets out a good howl in the outro - like days of old. His love lyrics are almost always simple, but say so much !
Jimmy arpeggiated on the guitar, there's heavy guitar bar chords and intense AF guitar solo and making his guitar cry coming out of the solo. Sheer brilliance !
Jonesy's strings and bass were really awesome. It added such a beautiful element to the song and expanded Led Zeppelin possibilities so much. He's a musical genius.
Bonzo's drumming had all his drum signature elements - tasteful fills, heavy drumming for those heavy bridges, fuzz rolls going into the *guitar* solo and coming out of the solo -- and something no drummer does in studio records - in the outro - you can hear Bonzo hit the snare really hard and louder a few times and he does it w the bass drum as well. Those heavier cracks and thuds are known as "accents."
Bonzo is also using heavy ghost noting on the snare in the final verse and nice tasteful pitter pattering interaction between his hi-hat and snare drum ghosting. Hitting a drums louder suddenly is discouraged in the studio - not for a pioneer like Bonzo. Those extra loud cracks and thuds - are very loud indeed and not common on studio recordings !
This song is so beautiful and brings me to tears some times - just knowing how beautiful it was, what a loss Bonzo was and how the music industry was never the same after Led Zeppelin checked out.
Bonzo was not sick during recording of this album in Nov/Dec of 1978, nor was he sick when it was released on Aug 15, 1979, nor was he sick when he passed away.
It has been noted by more than one rock star, particularly Simon Kirke of Bad Company that Bonzo was seen crying on Led Zeppelin's 1975 US Tour, bc he missed his wife and son, Jason. Bonzo’s wife, Patricia was also pregnant with their daughter, Zoe, all during Led Zeppelin's 1975 US Tour - Jan 18th to March 27th and I'm sure Bonzo wanted to be w his wife to help her, etc
Zoe was born on June 10th, 1975, so Bonzo was home for her birth.
When Plant's son passed near the end of Led Zeppelin's mammoth 1977 US Tour on July 26th, 1977, from a rare stomach virus and within hours of initially getting sick - it was obviously devastating for Plant and his family.
Plant almost quit the band and almost became a school teacher in Kidderminster. He didn't see the point in all the excess and fame, when his family was in disarray from the death of his son.
Robert said he never touched another chemical substance again after his son passed. It was obviously a very sober experience for him.
After Karac, Robert's son died, Bonzo spent a lot of time comforting Robert. They were friends since being teenagers. I'm guessing that they talked a lot about touring and what they wanted and didn't want - privately - amongst themselves.
So, by 1980, Led Zeppelin finally toured again - their Tour Over Europe - lasted from June 17th to July 7th - 14 gigs in all and only three weeks long.
That fit right in with Robert's touring demands that he laid out (I'm sure Bonzo and him talked about it, as Bonzo had enough of touring since 1975) - Robert told the other band members and Peter Grant for him to tour again - they will no longer play more than two shows in a row -- in other words two shows can be played two nights or days in a row, but there has to be at least a day off between the next show or shows. Led Zeppelin will not be away from home for more than three weeks at a time.
Led Zeppelin took a break from July 8th, 1980 till Sept 24th, 1980. Led Zeppelin's first and last rehearsal day for their upcoming 1980 US Tour - was on Sept 24th, 1980.
Bonzo knowing he was rehearsing to be on tour and away from his family - began drinking on the way to the rehearsal. He drank all through the day and into the night, when they got to Jimmy's house in Windsor to sleep over.
Bonzo did not come down for rehearsal and at about 1:30PM in the afternoon on Sept 25th, 1980, John Paul Jones and newly named tour manager, Benji Lefevre (and Robert's personal assistant since 1973) went upstairs to wake Bonzo up.
He was on his back and blue in the face. He drank so much that he vomited, while rolled over on his back and slowly inhaled his vomit over the course of several hours, as per the coroner's report. He had been put to bed just before midnight, when he was helped up the stairs by a few people.
His blood alcohol content was .41 - four times the legal limit and most people would be in a coma at .25 -- Bonzo had obviously built up a huge alcohol tolerance to not throw up sooner, after 12 hours of heavy drinking.
He drank almost a gallon of vodka. He had no illicit drugs in his system.
To me, he may have drank so much, as he was thinking about leaving his family again, daughter Zoe now 5 yrs old and Jason, 14 yrs old -- leaving them to tour 3,000 to 4,000 miles away from home. It's almost like he accidentally drank himself to death.
It's a shame, bc he was such a loss. Bev Bevan, Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood - all of ELO attended Bonzo's funeral. Bevan said [We had to squeeze into the back of the little church in Rushock - as there was no room and the wails and crying of people was overwhelming. I'd never witnessed anything like it. It was non-stop crying and wailing through the entire service].
John Bonham was friends with many of the locals who just viewed him as a friend. John went to local pubs and chatted with everyone and anyone. He was a great conversationalist. He had a split personality some times when he was drunk, but he was a Gemini and he wasnt always mean when he was drunk. It just seemed to be when he was on tour and away from his family.
Bonham also bought, fixed up and restored old farms and houses around his area of Redditch, Birmingham. He grew up in the building trades working with his father, Jacko.
Bonzo was the best man at Black Sabbath's guitarist, Tony Iommi's wedding. Tony confirmed John was a lot of fun when they went out together and it was always an adventure.
Led Zeppelin were practicing Carouselambra to play on this tour and trying to figure out how to do the middle section of Fool in the Rain. It's my suspicion that they would've added I'm Gonna Crawl to the set list and replaced Since I've Been Loving You with it.

Fate of Nations is such a triumph of an album, Memory Song is beautiful and sad.
@joeyhuebner10 Yeah, it's a haunting song. I could tell right off the bat it was a tribute to Bonzo. Those heavy, heavy dominantly loud drums and that Jimmy-esque dissonance guitar riff over it and those acoustic guitars -- that's the most Zeppelin-ish song that I've heard from Robert. I won't get into details, but it's another one of those songs where Robert says the quiet parts aloud and almost no one seemed to catch it. It was his most passionate album and he ended up in smaller venues - that may have due to grunge exploding, idk. It's bizarre how passion-filled that album is and how didn't sell quite as well as I expected.
The last song of the last album and they end it with the blues. I am not ashamed to admit this song has moved me to tears before especially when I was going thru some difficult times in my life. Jimmy Page on that solo captures such emotion plus Roberts singing. No one else ever moved me quite like they did. It’s terrific in my opinion.

After 40 shots of vodka Bonham died. Page was messed up on heroin. Plant's son had just died. Plus the car crash and the vocal cord problems. This album shows where the band was at this time. The album sounds like they were deep under water. Even so, their genius bubbles up and shines through. Don't miss Coda - it rocks.

That’s a good analogy… I have the same image in my head, about Page in particular, every time I hear the slow middle section of “carouselambra”…. If heroin could talk, it would sound like Jimmy’s guitar in that section. I always hear the sound and imagine Jimmy sinking deeper and deeper into dark waters… falling away from his own creation. The sound is heavy but smooth, seductive and alluring, but incredibly powerful and dangerous… just like heroin. We are incredibly fortunate that Jimmy made his way back to the surface, and that we have him here with us today. He made it back from the deep… Most do not.
Mr Bonham said he always used a single pedal, that’s another reason why I believe he’s was the best drummer in contemporary music. I’ve been flailing away in frustration for decades trying to possess a fraction of his skill level 🤣
Me too. Gigantic influence inside my mind on stage when I was a working drummer. Some recognized it....some didn`t. I loved the ones who did because every moment was a tribute to him...the feeling...the respect. It amazed me when audience members knew. John was whispering in my ear from the beginning. He was. He`s alive! You know. I know. Respect!

Nice reaction, thanks! No, they didn't know this was going to be their last studio album. In fact, Page and Bonham had talked about wanting the next to contain more hard rock than album 8 did, but Bonham died unexpectedly and the other three couldn't see the band going on without him.
I really do hope that you react to CODA. They had to fulfill their contract with Atlantic Records so Page had the task of compiling unused tracks from previous sessions, and a couple of songs from recordings of early live performances, thus the 8 tracks on CODA span their twelve-year history together as a band.
One "industry" critic stated that, "Even though Led Zeppelin weren’t around to promote it with live shows, Coda still went Top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic and yielded a platinum disc in the US. Its stock has remained high ever since showing that it remains an essential purchase on its own terms."
It's an excellent album that shouldn't be missed, so I hope you consider reacting to it.

I was so bummed because I was finally old enough to go to a concert and I was planning on finally seeing them live. I can remember the exact record store I went to to get the album. Small place on 17th street in Newport Beach CA.

This song ranks right up there with Since I've been Loving You. Nothing but pure blues. It's a shame it never got the recognition it deserves. The solo by Jimmy Page is absolute fire.
After a day of rehearsals and drinking at Pages house, Bonham was taken to bed for the evening. The next day John Paul Jones tried, unsuccessfully to wake him. He never woke up again. Just heartbreaking. Before his death, Page and Bonham discussed developing a new, harder, more technically proficient sound for the next album...can you even imagine? So sad we never found out. Now you guys get it. You understand that they just had something no other band could match...now, then, or ever.

Coda is key.
First there are some older tracks that didn’t make albums, but more importantly there are 3 tracks from the In through the outdoor sessions that were more guitar oriented. Page maintained that he saved them for the next album that would be more guitar/rock oriented. I think if he knew that would be his last record with Zep he might have included 2 of those 3 songs.
The cinematic ending to this group with this song was appropriate but totally coincidental as Bonham’s death was sudden. This song is so good but also sad especially when you realize it was the last song on last studio album… hope you continue to react to other zeppelin material such as Coda and LZ live. At the very lest you definitely have to check out ‘Traveling Riverside blues’ unbelievable song that didn’t get released until their Box set came out in 94. 14 years after they broke up. You will be astounded that this song sat 14 years in the vault. Only the greatest of all time could get away with that.
Correction traveling riverside blues was released in 1990 with the box set not 94. still a hell of a long time for a great song to be vaulted

Though it has a salacious aspect, playing up the occult interests and influences of Jimmy Page, it details every record, how the songs were crafted, the instruments used, the recording techniques and the influences. Its a good read and you can get a cheap copy at a used book store. It also covers every tour they did in detail as well. My copy is in pieces from being read so much or I'd send it to you. It will answer many of your questions.

I just got back from being overseas for 5 years and had a nice stereo system. Sansuii speakers, reel to reel tape deck, I was recording music onto my tape deck from the local rock station when they announced John’s passing. I had tears come to my eyes even on what I’ve seen in the service. I continued recording but after it was over when I got orders back overseas I gave everything to my friend. I couldn’t listen to that tape or anything to do with it.

Bonham was an alcoholic. He was stressed about the upcoming US tour, and depressed that his good friend and drummer for The Who, Keith Moon had recently died..and after a night a heavy drinking with Jimmy, he went to bed in one of Jimmy’s guest rooms. He “choked on his vomit” in the night and died. 😢
You know? I grew up with Zeppelin and think I know all of their music really well, including this song. But, listening to this now, it may be my favorite Zep tune....so mature and masterful; the band at their zenith

I was 14 when this album was released. It was a big deal that a new album was being released and it was called Led Zeppelin day! I had someone that lived up the street who was 18 at the time that said he would take me to their announced concert at the San Diego Sports Arena. It was going to be my first concert and Led Zeppelin was my favorite band. Just a few months later John Bonham died and Led Zeppelin announced their retirement.

The Page&Plant's 1998 album "Walking into Clarksdale" is very enjoyable and a very compelling throwback to Zeppelin, with original compositions.

The brilliant Tea For One was played live on the Japan Tour Page&Plant 1996, e.g. video from Tokyo.

Bonham got really drunk one night and chocked on his own vomit. Very tragic how alcohol has killed a lot of great musicians. He was a heavy drinker

The day he died he had 16 shots of vodka just with his breakfast!! Kept drinking all day. Didn’t wake up the next.

When it comes to the devastation wrought by drug abuse, nothing can hold a candle to alcohol.

I’ve been a Zep fanatic for decades and I never gave this album enough love. It’s not my favorite, but it’s damn good, and I’m Gonna Crawl I think is their best blues since Since I’ve Been Loving You. Really came from the heart of the whole band.

I was going to KSU in Manhattan Kansas and had tickets for their concert in Chicago. Tickets in hand. Kept them. Gave one to my roommate at the time. I think he was at Jimmy’s Page’s house.
Please Please Please do CODA as well. Although it's just outtakes it's LED ZEPPELIN outtakes. One of the greatest bands of all time. Even their outtakes are awesome. If you do Please keep in mind that it covers their entire career so you get stuff from Led Zeppelin 1 all the way through In Through The Out Door. Thanks for the wonderful reactions!

This song reminds me so much of since I been loving you. Don't forget jpj and Robert had a lot of input on this album. Another one of my favorites. But all of zepp is my favorite.😊
CODA is a collection of great songs that didn’t fit on the albums kind of like the previously recorded tracks on Physical Graffiti. It spans their whole career and is well worth a listen. There’s some great Bonham stuff on here as well!
Even though I didn't care for this album as a whole, I've always liked this song.

When I was 14 years old my best friend introduced me to Led Zeppelin. She said, "I know you're gonna love this band". I'm 54. I didn't see Zeppelin live but did see Plant when he was in The Honey Drippers 😂 and Page when he was with The Firm. Being a big Zeppelin fan, both bands disappointed but at least I got to see Page & Plant live.
As talented as every Zeppelin member is/was (RIP Bonham) nothing compares to Led Zeppelin.
The album after this one, "Coda," does have three songs where were actually from the recording sessions for "In Through the Out Door." One of them, "Wearing and Tearing," rocks much harder than anything on ITTOD. I wish it had been included (on the album for which it was recorded). I really love ITTOD, but "Wearing and Tearing" definitely was the hard rock that many fans were missing from Zep on that album! Glad it made it to "Coda!"
Robert Plant and John Bohnam was always into blues music even before they hooked up as a group back before they named themselves Led Zeppelin ,but Plant and Jimmy Page hooked up with John Bohnam not knowing that Bohnam was into blues also , then along came Jon Paul Jones and the rest was history

You have what many critics.. Magazines... Countless people in the music industry.. And just the everyday music listener say arguably the best guitarist ever Jimmy Page, the best vocalist ever Robert Plant, the best and hardest hitting drummer ever John Bonham and even John Paul Jones get high accolades for the work he has done with the band... you will probably never find another band with the all-around Talent as Led Zeppelin there an all-star band and of course Hall of Famers.. this is why today Zeppelin is still highly regarded as the best band ever.. and the influence that Led Zeppelin has over the younger generation today is incredible decades later.
Jimmy Page is sloppy....and that`s so real and amazing. I loved his bends and mistakes all over this album. It`s GORGEOUS...REAL! Now we have...........AUTO TUNE! A curse...a curse!
Thanks for your reactions to Zep it’s been fabulous. So sad we are at the end. Please do Coda. Unfortunately Bonzo had drunk too much and choked on his vomit in his sleep. Terrible accident, especially for someone so young and talented; such a loss to his young family. I’m gonna crawl is very poignant, incredibly emotional and heart wrenching especially knowing what we do now. The end of something so beautiful…they brought a lot of joy to so many.
What a truly great, emotional song. Please do Coda, guys. Still some standout tracks and two incredible live songs...We're gonna groove and I can't quit you, babe. Poor Tom, Darlene and more should have made it on albums.
This has been one of my favorite Zeppelin tunes since I first heard it on my uncle's 8-track in his station wagon when this came out in 1979. I consider myself lucky to have many musical influences in my life as a kid growing up in the 70s and beyond. Nice review guys 🙂
This song has gained stature as the realization that this was the last song that the band ever produced for an album. I liked it fromt he beginning, but through the years it really hits home now.
They put all their throw aways on the last album. Thankfully they did the o2 concert.

JPJ is the driving force behind this album cause Bonz was drunk, Page was strung out, Plant was there and involved but JPJ deserves flowers for this. Bonham died when he passed out drunk and choked on his own vomit. Horrible, but not completely unexpected that he was going downhill. Alcoholism robbed us of Keith Moon and John Bonham, arguably the 2 greatest rock drummers of that era, and maybe ever. So with Bonham dying, and Plant losing a son, that’s where a closeness between Jason Bonham (his son who drummed with their reunion and at the Heart tribute) losing a dad and Plant losing a son came in. Plant would never have done anything without a Bonham drummer for any Zep stuff.

Great catch on the bluesy bookends to their catalog. This is their real last album - Coda is stuff from the cutting room floor. Still better than what most bands produced - but nowhere near the level of greatness we are accustomed to from LZ. I'm not saying that I'm watching too many of your videos but my wife asked me how the meatloaf was and I said " that's hard "and she thought I meant it was overcooked. Also, please check out Pet Sounds from The Beach Boys - its not surf music- its one of the greatest albums ever produced - as innovative and influential as anything The Beatles made. I am seeing many more ads on your videos.That can only mean that your channel is blowing up. Well deserved - Congratulations!

The most notable thing about this song for me has always been Robert's lower register belting style which he brings out before the guitar solo and then maintains. The dude could belt with the best, but only used it sparingly over the course of their run.
Oretty sure Bonham died from asphyxiation (his own vomit). It wasnt w gradual orocess though you could aay the process of partying roo much for years finally caught up.
Bonham had been on an all day drinking bender with Page, drinking quadruple vodkas at a local pub, I think he went back to Page’s house, carried on drinking until he basically passed out. Someone put him to bed and was found dead the following day. The band were on a mid tour break and had been in good form, it’s difficult to know for how much longer they would’ve continued without Bonham’s passing , I think they may have had one or two more albums in them, Plant was expressing concerns on his future at the time as he entered his early 30’s and Page was still deep into his addictions.

Ah hopefully their is more Live. Especially Moby Dick Live Long Version where Bonham has drum solo and plays non stop. Idk how he did it. Uses sticks hands and bongo drums. ❤
This coming Monday, 9/25, will be the 43rd anniversary of John Bonhan's passing!!
I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news.
My senior year of high school was just starting. My group of friends & I were sitting in the quad at 1st break & then the word was spreading fast that John had passed away. The tickets for the 'In thru the Outdoor' tour were just coming on sale, too.😢 Sad, sad day. The Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash was in my freshman year, 1977....
I never saw LZ in concert, but my dad saw them at the Santa Monica Civic in '72. I still am bummed he didn't take me with him. 😅
Bonzo drank way too much. He wasnt sick; however, he had a drinking problem. He choked on his vomit while sleeping. Alcohol overdose. He dreaded leaving home as they rehearsed for the American tour.
Coda came out in 1982 to satisfy contractual obligations. The first 2 songs are taken from the 1-9-70 Royal Albert Hall concert and tweaked by Page.
You might want to check out the songs “In the Mood” and “Big Log” by Robert Plant. Good stuff.
I think, after all this time discovering Zeppelin, it would be remiss for you two cool catz to miss out on the entire Live album, "The Song Remains the Same" (tho you've seen a few)... Coda, the Page/Plant reunion album "No Quarter", the 2007 reunion for Ahmet Ertagun at the O2 Arena, maybe even Plant's solo work and a track from Coverdale/Page. Besides we'd all watch it if you did any of those!!!
I'm stunned that by the time you stopped the song to talk about it, you'd forgotten the string synthesizer that starts the track off. "I'm Gonna Crawl" sounds like a much more modern take on the blues compared to their earlier stuff. Plant sings this one like he's a boozy lounge singer playing to a handful of late-night patrons. Jones brings the modern feel with his synth, which is tasteful and not over-done. One thing I never noticed till now, was just how reminiscent Jimmy Page's guitar solo is (at the very beginning) of the classic guitar instrumental, "Sleepwalk" from Santo and Johnny. Evokes a similar mood.

This is a great song! The next album 'Coda' has a few songs worth reacting to: 'Darlene', 'Wearing and Tearing', 'Poor Tom' and a couple more. The best song on the album got to be 'Traveling Riverside Blues', very worth a reaction.
Yeah it has that 50's type vibe mixed with blues . Plant going solo shortly after this really shows in that song. Even up to now there is a couple great tunes off his colab with Alison Krauss. But his early albums like Principle and Pictures you should check out. Big log would be a great song to check out first

The last two albums the GOATS did Jimmy and Bonzo were both sick, one from Heroin and John from being drunk. But Robert and The greatest musician ever JPJ IMO, brought this album together and made it happen. Singed THE GOATS.

John drink 40 shots of vodka in 12 hours he passed out, drunk, obviously on the couch, and they put him to bed while he was sleeping he started to vomit and drowned in his own vomit
He wasn’t sick other than being an alcoholic. It was just a tragic ending.
He died on his own vomit after one of his drinking binges. He wasn’t sick just a crazy drinker. Sad. I remember the day we heard of his passing. me and my friends were gathering newspapers to get tickets for an upcoming concert that were to be mailed on that day for a concert that never happened. 😢😢😢😢
