How do I know if I am ovulating?

- If you are trying to conceive, it is absolutely required that you ovulate. But how do you know if you are ovulating? It can be very confusing. Today on InfertilityTV we will clear up the confusion.
There are a number of different methods that can indicate if you ovulate. Some are more reliable than others.
First the methods you use without the need for a doctor.
1) Are your periods regular?
Generally speaking, if you are getting your period regularly about every 28 to 30 days, you can say with a high degree of certainty that you are ovulating. Subtract 14 from the length of time from one period to the next and that is likely the day you ovulated. So if you have a 28 day cycle from the beginning of one period to the beginning of the next, then you probably ovulated around day 14. If it was 29 days, then you likely ovulated on day 15 and so on
2) Use a home ovulation predictor test.
There are several different kinds of ovulation tests. The most commonly used tests and the least expensive ones, are the urine tests. They measure a hormone in your urine called LH which triggers ovulation. Start checking your urine each morning before you think you will ovulate and keep checking until it turns positive. It is a very accurate and highly reliable way to determine ovulation. There are tests that use saliva but they can be trickier to interpret. More recently, there has been an explosion of high monitors that you put in your bed, wrap around your wrist, place in your bra or even in your vagina. These high tech devices measure a variety of things such as temperature, heart rate, electrical resistance in your skin. Its tough to determine how well these instruments work since the only evaluation of their effectiveness comes from the company selling them. They are however, very expensive and there isnt any data yet to say they work better than cheaper methods
3)A thermometer
Some of the high tech devices measure changes in body temperature. Another way to do this is with a special thermometer called a basal temperature thermometer. Its very inexpensive but can be tricky since there are many things that can cause your temperature to fluctuate. It is only accurate in telling you if ovulation happened after the fact. So its good for documenting ovulation but poor for trying to predict ovulation beforehand
Methods that do require a doctor
1) Follicle monitoring
When an egg matures before ovulation, it does so inside of a small cyst called a follicle, doctors can use ultrasound to measure how big a follicle is getting. At the same time, she can do blood tests to check your estrogen and LH levels. To predict when you are going to ovulate
2) Progesterone blood test
After you ovulate, the levels of another hormone called progesterone will increase. A blood test in the doctors office can look at the level of progesterone and tell you if ovulation occurred. In most labs, a progesterone level over 2.5 or 3 indicates ovulation. Like the temperature changes, progesterone only increase after ovulation so its good for documenting if ovulation occurred but not for predicting ovulation.

i took letrozole in march and there was 2 dominant follicles has seen in ultrasound,and the size was 18mm and 17×16mm but i could not concieved,its 9 months of my marriage i didnot even concieved for once.. i was having issue of irregular periods that has been cured by taking instiol and from january to may it was regular.. what i do i m much depressed.

Hi. I have PCOS and now ttc. My obgyne put me on clomid 50mg but didnt ovulate. I've been using 1200mg NAC with 50mg clomid that time but it didnt work. My obgyne upped my clomid dose to 100mg and 500mg/day metformin. My question is, is it safe to take metformin and nac together? Thanks in advance for answering.
Hmmmm. That is an interesting question. I cant think of a reason why the two couldnt be taken together. I checked in an online drug interaction checker and no adverse reactions were reported

Can you ovulate when you period comes earlier than the fixed and runs for just 2day then comes again on the fixed day and then stops. E.g if it is meant to come on the 28th, but came on the 24th to 25th, stopped and later came on the 28th and then stopped. What can one do.
Hi Doc, I saw my period on 25th of Feb. And I m supposed to see again by 25th of March cos I m 29days cycle but I saw it on 1st of April. It has been like this for the past three months , could it be that my cycle has changed to a 36days cycle, is that normal?

Hi Doctor I used the clear blue urine test and I seem to be getting peak twice or thrice does it mean I'm ovulating a lot of times or can it be a sign for pcos. All the signs are there including cervical mucus I'm not sure what could be the reason

Humans are inefficient at producing babies. IUIs and IVF do not "make you pregnant" - they increase the "chances" for a pregnancy to occur. Sometimes there are underlying problems that can be corrected to further increase the chances. Bottom line is that if you are not comfortable with your fertility doctor is certainly reasonable to change

Hi doc, i got a misscarriage 3days ago. At fisrt i experienced a light vaginal bleeding without abdomenal cramping. Then the bleeding goes a heavier each day. I had a check with my ob and he gave me a utrogestan 100mg. He told me i should take it 3times a day. Then on the 3rd day after taking the medicine when i peed i see a blood clot on my pad😥 and i guess i got a misscariage. Doc, is it because of the medicine or not? Is it safe to have pregnancy again after what happened? I am 31 and this is my first but it's gone.😢
Any bleeding during the first trimester is considered a threatened miscarriage. Many of those will go on to miscarry despite trying to prevent the loss with medications like progesaterone

Ovulation USUALLY occurs about 14 days before the period. A woman with a 24 days cycle would usually be ovulating around day 10 - a 29 days cycle would be around day 15

Hallo doctor. I've got irregular short cycle between 22-24 days. last month i had my period was 14/9 late evening and i took an ovulation test daily. On the morning of the 26/9 de test showed i'm ovulating. 6 days later i've experienced cramps. on Friday the 1/10 i was experiencing a sudden pulling sensation on my uterus but it was gone after placing a warm water pad on my belly. But i'm still experiencing up to now a slight feeling of discomfort on my lower abdominaal and boobs are sores. It feels like i'm getting my period. Just i wonder if this would be a sign of pregnancy knowing i'm trying to conceive for a while now. We did had sex the night before i discovered i'm ovulation and the same hour i took the ovulation , then 36 hours later.
