Do the Fire Emblem Tellius Games NEED Remakes?

  • I finally got around to playing the Tellius duology this year and wanted to discuss my thoughts on them. Since a remake of Path of Radiance was rumored a few years back, I figured that was a solid angle to approach this video with.

    i hella love this duology. they were my first fire emblem games ever. and i would hellish love an game like 100-200 years later, with the last one of the greil bloodline. but with explainings what happened in all this years with the ancestors of that protgonist. the grandchild of sothe and micaiah with the grandchild of ike. i need that. i absolutley need that. shut up and take my money!
    and as a side character, one of the grandchildren of largo and calil, that still talks about the heroic deeds of grandfather largo, many ages ago. alone to write these letters are giving me chills.

      I'd be interested to see that someday! I just think Intelligent Systems should prioritize remakes of the games that aren't officially localized yet. Tellius being stranded on old hardware sucks for those who don't want to emulate though...

    while i'd love to see both these games remade i think for Path of Radiance it would be fine if it just got a remaster. for Radiant Dawn however it definitely needs to be a remake.

    I'm currently replaying through both these games and honestly, they've aged REALLY well all things considered. I honestly think the main thing they could do to improve them would just be presentation, mostly. Being able to have proper voice acting and cutscenes (like Three Houses) would make a huge difference. The writing in these games is amazing but it would hit a lot harder if the visuals weren't just static portraits where only the mouth moves.
    Also, modernizing the supports (in BOTH games) would be a boon as well. As you said, being limited to just one or two supports per character locks you out of seeing all these great character interactions.
    One thing I worry about though is that they would remove all the difficulty and strategy from the games if they remade them. I didn't realize how much I missed actually caring about the treasures on the map, or trying to figure out how to recruit a new character. Modern FE games just hand you so many resources it completely devalues them.

      All solid points. I think the supports are the biggest problem I have with these games, otherwise they hold up extremely well imo. The Tellius story presented with modern technology and a AAA budget would be awesome to see, and is selfishly why I want these games remade after Jugdral and maybe Archanea.
      Your points about difficulty are interesting. I feel like IS approaches remakes differently than new entries but it remains to be seen if their philosophy has changed since Echoes was criticized for being too faithful to Gaiden in certain ways. Plus Echoes hard mode was very manageable compared to other hardest difficulties.

    If they remade the games! I'd say create a Skill Store. The Skill System of POR and RD was nice, but VERY Flawed! Especially as you had to FIND the skills! I'd say seperate Skills into Common, Uncommon and Rare/Occult! Common should be cheaper to buy and are more useful utility or Such! Like something like Gamble will be a Common Skill! As for lower Hit! You can increased Crit! Good for say "Rolf" if your not having Skill issues with him, or Mia who I would find REAL interesting if she ever MISSED a hit even with Gamble decreasing it! Smite would be a Common Skill that shows up in the shop LATER but not at the point you could POSSIBLY get it in the original POR; Uncommon would be more expensive (Like buying a Silver Weapon expensive or to be nice slightly more then a Steel Weapon!) but these's would have more meat in them like say "Wrath" or maybe Resolve (that's more like how it is in Engage with a Resolve+ being more of a Rare skill). And Rare, well other then a few that would be in the shop (specifically AFTER the chapters you would GET the skill if you were a fool and missed them) and aren't Infinite but finite! Meaning you might only get TWO of that same skill! Occult though I feel should be tied to the Class Level of Promotions since there is no Class Switching in the Tellius games! So why not tie certain skills to a class level like class skills in Fates & Engage! I'd combine Skill Capacity (and increase the Capacity then how it was in the original) and a hard limit of how many skills TOTAL even if you can beat the system that can be equipped! Class Skill would be EXEMPT from the Capacity AND the Grand Total! so Customization is not screwed over! The Prices at the shop would take into mind this is NOT a grinding FE because of the "moving on" nature like the classics NOT Gaiden & Sacred Stones! So you'd have to be mindful of money. Blacksmith would exist in a way to fix Weapons, but the Hammerne Staff would have like Two to Three of them in the game TOTAL! Two MUCH sooner then it appears (in POR it's Chapter TWENTY FUCKING THREE you get one! I feel that's abit LATE game for something like this)
    Also Sothe for how much important he is (as I never thought the sister he talked about Micaiah would be the Lord of the second part LOL) I'd change his class to "Thief" and make Rogue his promotion! Make Blossom his Personal Skill and call it what it really is now "Aptitude" but I'd remove that HORRIBLE EXP cut down to 1/2 it had! Now that he has a promotion (since I want to tie it in that his experiences in POR, EVEN IF YOU DON'T USE HIM makes him the most experienced of the Dawn Brigade! Like Nolan is the oldest not taking into mind Micaiah Branded status likely making her MUCH older then him, but his being competent as a Axe Fighter is natural Talent and some experience fighting and killing others compared to the fresh Edward and "use to shooting at targets" Leonardo seeing how his backstory places he use to be a rich noble till he fell on hard times! But Sothe's ACTUAL. Sothe would also promote to Whisper either the moment Micaiah and company meet up with the Resistance and join up! Being "Micaiah" Whisper/Spy or he'd promote at the same time as Micaiah upon the end of Part 1. Since Personal Skills are going to be in Radiant Dawn! I'd still keep his Aptitude only adjust it because his Bases are going to be better! Frankly speaking I want to add a "bonus" to characters you used and got to a certain level before POR story finished! Their stats will be adjusted for Radiant Dawn. But at least this makes it more worth it if you used them. Think it's better to just slightly edit his growths to take Aptitude into mind. Knives will be similar to how they are in Engage with the Poison system to make them more interesting to use! Stiletto being a Armor slayer that is useful but not something enemy Rogues will have just to be SAFE for Gatrie, Brom and Tauroneo.
    Sadly I'm cutting ALOT of the rot out which is the Playable roster of characters. Some will be background or like Green Units you can control like Lethe sister Lyre and her "Male Trans Competition" for Ranulf D LOL but frankly, you're likely to be using POR returning characters more! But this is just to IMPROVE on many new/now playable Radiant Dawn characters to get characterization they need! Meg was useless so she gets the cut! Fiona joins sooner and has better Bases to make her usable or if not she gets the "playable Green Unit" treatment like Lyre! Only Radiant Dawns I'm willing to keep is Edward, Nolan, Aran, Laura, maybe Vika (Since Heroes is trying to give her some presence so I'd say expand on her), THE WOLF QUEEN (The Wolf guy will be a NPC, he has little to NO presence). I feel the Teams in Part 4 needs to be TRIM from Three to instead TWO as it feels silly to make it three just so Elincia has some presence! Better her stuff is dealt with in Ike's side since alot of his chapters before the Tower feel pointless! So might as well have him doing HER stuff instead! Especially involving her Uncle as he has a Special Conversation with him when he was brainwashed as Elincia did in POR (I'd expand MORE on that as well) as lets be real, the main characters are Ike and Micaiah! I didn't see Elincia among the Emblems in Engage! So she's not a Lord! I still DO love her Story arc and such in Part 2, but Part 2 should have been the Greil Mercs early Part 3 chapters, I will say I. Honestly I'd have shorten YET increase Part 1 and 2 so you have EQUAL amount of time with BOTH the Dawn Brigade AND the Greil Mercenaries (Elincia would be DLC or a Side story akin to Heirs of Fate in Fire Emblem Fates! I mean it's as long as a DLC Fire Emblem Side story like Heirs of Fate and Engage's Fell Xenologue! So why not. I mean we can still get Valtome as a POS villain since he was still prevalent in Part 3). But this is just my thoughts on the story and characters! ALOT of stuff I'd still keep! Well on the Path of Radiance side since I really didn't hate a chapter in Path of Radiance where I did have complaints with Radiant Dawn because of the LONG AMOUNT OF TIME I'm away from certain parties (Seriously they throw enemies that the Greil Mercenaries would have no problem with at your Dawn Brigade characters who would likely be at a level they were when they completed Part 1! That's just not right in my opinion! Lucky Tactics worked out fine and the Laquz did NOT have Bird's with them for that Defense/Fog of War map! Seriously Intelligent Studios STOP MIXING TWO ANNOYING MECHANICS! I can take Fog of War, Desert Maps AND Defense maps on their own! But combining TWO of them is just EVIL ever since they mixed Fog of War with DESERT in Binding Blade (Way to make Roy and Liliana teacher USELESS by making her join chapter a map she has the WORSE advantage with! Hopefully Desert maps are akin to that one in Engage where Land Mounted are NOT crippled in the sand. Instead landing in Quicksand will give you a horrible time so be mindful where you move yourself

    Don't think so, Path of radiance though could be remastered and at the same time they could allow us the see the hit, damages and crit percentage during battles.

    I'd like to see a remake in the sense that the game is remade to be exactly how it was before, but in widescreen, hd/4k native art, improved and more accurate translations with the more detailed script translated (normal mode in Japan had a more simplified script which is the one that was translated to English, difficult had the more detailed and expanded script) and to tie both PoR and RD together more consistently.
    However, I know that the authenticity of these two games won't be preserved. The art style won't be preserved, there'll be voice acting and other unnecessarily added stuff that will detract from the game rather than add to it. I know people want voice acting, but this game was written in an era where you were expected to read what was on the screen, not hear it.
    If it's a remake in the sense that it keeps the two games how they are but with fidelity improvements and script changes that only fix accidental inconsistencies and such. I'm all for it.
    If it's an "updated for modern audiences" kind of deal. Don't touch it.
    I'm happy to have both games on disc for my GCN and Wii as well as versions for Dolphin I can go back to at any time.

      I generally agree in that not much needs to be changed aside from what you mentioned since the games feel modern enough as it stands. I'd take a remaster with the restored script and such in a heartbeat.
      But to play devil's advocate out of curiosity: If IS were to fully remake these games someday with voice acting, new art style, etc., would it not be enough to just ignore the remake and stick with the originals? I've definitely done that in the past with some remakes

      @@CobraCodex There's a reason why PoR/RD resonated in a very particular way with a lot of people. May as well just make a different Fire Emblem game if the things that made those two games the way they were ended up being changed drastically.
      I often find that modern media does this a lot. New people take something old, are convinced they can rearrange, change and update it to make it better... But end up gutting the soul of the entire piece of fiction in the process.
      Hence why, with a series like Fire Emblem, it's best to create a new world as the setting than to tamper with an already established one that has a very particular fan base.
      To be honest I'm not actually a fan of Fire Emblem despite the fact that PoR/RD are two of my favourite games of all time. It would suck to see a mockery made out of them.

    Personally all of the new game plus stuff in Radiant Dawn really turns me off from playing them as they are now, so I'd like at least an edited remaster of some kind. I know I can always download someone else's save file but that's not a great workaround

    • @CobraCodex
      @CobraCodex  Před rokem

      That's fair I suppose. I'd argue you're not missing much without the new game plus bonuses, but it would've been nice to give players access to that if they imported a Path of Radiance save or something

  • @TWDub
    @TWDub Před 7 měsíci

    Path of Radiance was my first Fire Emblem game. And while I would LOVE to see remakes, the idea that remakes are "needed" is disingenuous. We have emulation, and some folks might still have their Gamecube/Wii consoles which still work, as well as the discs. I know I did for a very long time, until recently. Still, I would definitely love a remake of Path of Radiance, and Radiant Dawn. However, Radiant Dawn would need some serious rewrites to the story as it the story was by far the weakest part of the entire game to the point of literally being nonsensical.
    Ass-backward decisions from characters like Micaiah and even Ike at one or two moments, coupled with some inconsistencies in character portrayal between cutscenes, and other issues plagued it from start to finish. Another thing they'd need to change in RD is the stat distribution system. The growth rates are just... Let's just say the growth rates are beyond atrocious and poorly optimized for best character growth by endgame. Additionally, Bonus Experience should be treated the same as in PoR. Totally random stat upgrades (unless playing "Fixed" mode, which could be added) instead of a guaranteed 3 stats which heavily favor (almost to the point of pulling your hair out) their three highest percentage stats in terms of growth rates. Micaiah, for example, would ONLY get Magic, Luck, and Res on Bonus EXP unless one or more of them were maxed out. And on Hard Mode especially, this is more of a headache and an obstacle to fun than an enhancement of it.
    So, if they were to rewrite Radiant Dawn so it made more sense story-wise, maybe change a few mission objectives to better fit the narrative, and clean up the Bonus EXP shenanigans, I would die a happy man if we got a remake of the game. PoR doesn't really need much changing. Just graphic updates, mostly. Though, I will say one thing that NEEDS to change... Ike + Elincia A/S support NEEDS A ROMANCE SUPPORT ENDING!! I know, I know. I ship the two of them really hard. But c'mon! Who can argue the two of them are perfect for each other?! Give them a romance, dammit!! Ike doesn't need to be King or anything. Just give them a romantic moment together where they acknowledge their feelings but realize they can't be together because of the social status quo. And if you A/S Support them in Radiant Dawn and carry your save data over (keeping the PoR stat bonus transfers, btw) then Elincia abdicates the throne and can FINALLY be with Ike as the two of them disappear from Tellius never to be seen again! Tell me that wouldn't be the single most satisfying long-term Support convo in all of Fire Emblem!!

    • @CobraCodex
      @CobraCodex  Před 7 měsíci

      Funny enough I also think the term "need" is not exactly the best term to use regarding remakes since it ultimately boils down to what's marketable. Though I would argue that other FE games do need to be remade first due to being inaccessible and/or outdated in certain ways, even if they are playable via emulation.
      As far as Tellius, there's definitely a lot of small tweaks that could potentially even be added/changed in an ambitious remaster. But yea there's a lot about RD's story in particular that could benefit from a full on remake, in which case it would only make sense to remake PoR first which doesn't really need as many drastic changes imo

  • @Gacha-Man
    @Gacha-Man Před rokem

    The Tellius games are still contemporary to FE games 13+ in story depth (personal favorite being FE7). 9 and 10 are basically where modern FE starts. Really no need to polish up games that still hold up and leave the pixel graphics even further in the dust. Though using dodge tanks in the old games was more satisfying.

    • @CobraCodex
      @CobraCodex  Před rokem

      Exactly, and even the GBA games still hold up well minus story presentation and some small QoL things. Which basically just leaves 4 and 5 at that point (and 6 official English translation at least)

  • @KantaCrowe

    I would say a remaster or something is in order. Not only are they borderline impossible to get at a reasonable price rn but the games could use a few fixes. UI updates, quicker pacing on battles, stuff like that.

    • @CobraCodex

      I agree, a high effort remaster with those small quality of life changes would be ideal
