    I don’t understand why this album is getting so much hate, this is Joji. I love this album and can’t stop listening to it, sure it’s a bit short and maybe sounds a little unfinished in parts but it’s a really solid project from a really solid artist and I think it shows that there’s exciting stuff to come from Joji

      I played it on the speaker in my job when me and my coworkers were cleaning up the kitchen, creating a vibe- showing off some new good music. Some good Joji. For the vibes. Soft, crooning, soothing-beautiful. And one of my fucking coworkers kept saying and emphasizing that the song was “GAARRBBAAGGEE”… ”Turn this SHIT OFF!” I know he was trying to be funny or some shit too, but Jesus… I understand maybe not liking the vibe of the song; too slow?, too sad? Eh, not for me. But to say it’s ‘garbage’? And ‘shit’? Such a beautiful song like this??

  • @jacquelinecrisostomo7272

    I had a lot of the same reactions that you had when I first listened to it. I feel like since I listen to Joji a lot, it's okay to me that not all of his music has that same ballad, very soothing-surrounding experience. I feel like the songs that aren't like his usual really just force you to listen to the lyrics more to find the meaning rather than just using the music in general. For me, I know it took me awhile to get used to songs like Dissolve and BLAHBLAHBLAH DEMO. I'm just glad that you're giving Joji the praise he deserves in terms of this album even though it's different because I still think that it's really good.

    tbf i really loved that album since it talks about things and thoughts that have tormented my life recently and that i can relate to. in my opinion this is joji‘s most mature project. it’s his most polished album but at the same time it is not. let me explain. all his thoughts and background behind this project are very clear but the product itself doesn’t succeed in putting them out which gives that feeling of an unfinished project. and tbh as much as my first listen touched me emotionally and the potential this album has on paper i also do feel like wanting more. vocally i think that joji has reached his peak but again doesn’t show his full potential he shown us on slow dancing in the dark. personally i really liked the project since it really had me in my feels but i also tried to acknowledge and understand why the critics have been so poor on this album. definitely in my top 10 album of the year. 7/10

    Really like the stuff on this album, but I certainly have my gripes and most of it comes down to me wanting more. Joji is so damn talented, he has such a great voice and vision. I wish we got more songs and I wish some of the songs we got were longer, 1AM FREESTYLE especially. There are a lot of fantastic moments here and my biggest issue with this is it left we wanting more which isn't a bad problem to have since it means I love Joji's music. I also feel like a lot of these songs feel like they're building up to something greater, like a climax where the instrumental should swell and Joji should bring our his vocals on full power, but then it ends just short which bothers me and increases that feeling of wanting more. Glimpse Of Us is a perfect song, I have no issues with it. Feeling Like The End is nice but that part at the end is a perfect example of a song feeling like its building to a climax and ending just short. Die For You is beautiful, very few complaints other than again wanting that end part to have some sort of big vocal climax to go along with those synths at the end. Before The Day Is Over is the only track where I actually think it could have been shorter, its a nice chill track that doesn't need that climax as much but also feels like it lingers just slightly too long. Dissolve is beautiful but that buildup at 2:34 in the song really is a perfect example of the needing a climax I'm talking about. Nigh Rider is totally perfect as is, fits perfectly into that late night drive type of vibe. BLAHBLAHBLAH DEMO is my least favorite song on the album and it isn't even bad, it just feels pretty unfinished as the title suggests and it needs more substance to it. YUKON (Interlude) is in that same vibe as Night Rider and needs no changes, I love it as is. 1AM FREESTYLE is the song that has me most conflicted since its both my favorite but also the one that I think had the most wasted the most potential, it is absolutely beautiful but needed to be at least a minute or 2 longer and needed that major climax to finish it off strong. Those are my feeling on the album. They may seem negative, but believe it or not I really like the album and I love Joji (he was fantastic when I saw him live in Austin), I just wish that this album did more with what it had because it has so many amazing ideas that I feel aren't fully fleshed out. Its an album I love but that I feel could have been so much more. Its also my subjective opinion though as someone whose favorite joji songs are the ones that have that swelling, climactic feeling (Slow Dancing In The Dark, Ew, 2nd half of Gimme Love, Run, Like You Do). Since this album was so short I'm hoping we hear more music from Joji in the near future and he doesn't disappear on us for almost 2 years like he did after Nectar, which was a top 5 album of 2020. I know nobody asked for my thoughts or cares, but I wanted to write this out just for myself. With all this said, this album is getting way too much hate. Its a solid 7 or 8 out of 10 and I don't know why people are acting like its awful when really they just wish it was longer like me.

I agree with a lot of what Shawn Cee says in his reaction to the album. Joji is working with an amazing palette and sound, but so many songs sound like unfinished paintings. The sound and vibe is there, it just needs to be pushed a little further to really reach the glory it can reach, which we know Joji can do with songs like SDITD, Gimme Love, Run, e.t.c. He just needs a little bit more confidence to fully flesh out songs to their true potential

    Here’s an original opinion that I formed on my own. This is a great album, definitely some future Joji classics. The whole “it feels incomplete” crowd just watched album reviews and copy and pasted those peoples opinions.
    He had a whole 2 years to work on this. Some songs are short because that’s just the way they are. So many people are used to songs that are 4 minutes long with 2 and a half minutes of filler or ad libs. The messages he can convey in the time he does is not crazy.
    In certain cases less is more, and this album was almost perfect. I just wish there was more songs. That just me being greedy tho lol. This is one of my favorite releases from papa ❤

      @Yuu • há 5 anos Exactly. We’re capable of forming our own opinions. 😅 The reception for Ballads 1 and Nectar wasn’t this split. That means this album is more controversial, and for a good reason.

      @EmileFeik Před rokem +2

      it is so so immature to claim that people who don't agree with you must be 'copy and pasting' other people's opinions. I have not watched or read a single review of this album except Jon's, and from my first listen I thought it sounded unfinished. The last three songs are literally called demo, interlude and freestyle. He should've released it as an EP.

    I enjoyed Smithereens. Wasn’t my favorite of his albums, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. Even though it was a bit short, I liked the songs, and all of them were all solid. I wished their could have been a few more songs, but other than the album being short, I personally don’t have much to complain about it.

    This album has two of him best songs ever, Glimpse of Us and Die For You. However, as a whole, I think Nectar was a more complete LP. Thats not taking anything away from SMITHEREENS, its great, but it does feel a little rushed? I dont know if thats the word im looking for, but aside from the two previous songs I mentioned, most people wont revisit SMITHEREENS as much as Nectar. And this is coming from a HUGE Joji fan, he's one of my favorite artists.

    I feel like this album was somewhat subpar overall, but damn I still love it. I hope now that he's free from his contract with 88rising that he starts to make even more unique stuff with very little outside influence. This album is pretty short, and given the 2 years we had to wait on it, I'm kind of disappointed. However I really like the tone he achieved with this project, and I'm really happy that we have more Joji music. This only makes me more excited for his future, given Glimpse Of Us hit the Billboard charts. I'm genuinely excited for what he does next. He's matured as a musician extremely well, and he's very very talented.

      You’re jumping the gun a little bit with him being “free” from his contract. 👀 Although if it is capping his creativity, taking too much of his income and forcing him to perform then it’s better he parts ways with them.

  • @pinkblossoms
    @pinkblossoms Před rokem +1

    I understand the criticism. It comes from a place of love. Fans who have followed Joji and want to see him grow, not wither. It’s not my favourite album but I like most of the songs and that’s good enough. I don’t think he’s reached his Magnus Opus as an artist yet. Which is good. It means there’s still a lot of road and promise ahead. We’re only on the third studio album. 👀 And he’s doing extremely well. He’s gonna play Madison Square Garden and he’s (allegedly) being nominated for two Grammies. We love to see it.
    That said, Nectar was a lot more experimental. And usually by the third studio album the artist has experimented enough that they have solidified their sound. Like The Beatles experimenting with their music and doing wild stuff is exactly what cemented their status as one of the greatest bands ever.
    For Smithereens, he took no risks. He didn’t experiment. Some songs are a bit spacey and make you zone out a bit. But I assume he was trying to cater to the fans who kept saying “I love Ballads 1 it’s his best work.” But I guess even Ballads 1 was more experimental than this. He dipped his toe in like rock/grunge type of songs with Wanted U and World$tar Money. It takes balls to experiment and try new stuff. He also experimented with Nectar. Like that beat switch in Gimme Love. Each song being so different from each other. He didn’t do that with Smithereens except for very brief moments in some songs. Maybe his creative control was limited.

      Most of the songs sound very similar no variety, Joji has a very distinct sad vibe and that's fine but you can only make so many songs about the same stuff till it gets old, it feels more like the album was released to stay relevant rather than actually make new interesting songs or to do something he hasn't done before

    I don’t care that this album is full of short songs. That makes sense. The title of the album is “Smithereens” or “small pieces”. This album is meant to give us small pieces of emotions. And not just the general ones like sadness, longing, regret, but the small, minute emotions you feel between the lines.
    Glimpse of us talks about someone who is trying to find happiness, but no matter what he does, he can’t get over the last person in his life.
    Feeling like the End, is about the period in a breakup where you start to feel frustrated that you can’t move on.
    Die for you, a story of undying love.
    You get the point. You are meant to experience these particular emotions, just as you would in your own life when it happens. They are short bursts of thoughts that get washed over by other emotions, when in fact they burrow into your mind and continue to make you feel pain, without you knowing.
    This is a masterpiece of an album.
