- Another starter, this time on a Jeep Laredo 3.7L engine. How to remove/install without removing the front drive shaft.
Welcome to Jamieson's Repair Shop!
My current retirement project is restoring a rusted out 1965 Thunderbird convertible from the inside out.
I'm taking it apart, repairing everything that needs repairing and putting it all back together.
I'm doing body work, paint removal, rust removal, metal fabrication, welding, forming, patching, and that's just the beginning!
Down the line there will be interior and engine work as well.
Come on into the shop and take a look!

You are absolutely the man. Everything you said was true. Made this job do able for the average home mechanic. Thank you.
I'm happy it was useful! 😃 Thank you for watching!
I watched several Jeep starter change-out videos before I changed the one in my 2007 Grand Cherokee. Jamieson's was the best, thanks for saving me a lot of time and effort. Like that electrical tape on the universal trick! Thanks...Albert
Thank you Albert, I appreciate you watching my channel, and I'm happy it made life easier. 🙂
This is by far the best step by step procedure.... Shows exactly the work involved instead of just before and after shots...thanks for this..
Thank you David!
Just did my 2005 Jeep Cherokee. Just like you said didn't even take drive shaft or anything did it in less then an hour easy fix! Thank you sir!
I'm happy it was helpful, thank you for watching my video!
Excellent tutorial! Just changed mine out today. Just followed the orientation for the starter when you installed it, and it went right in. Saved me a few rubles. THANK YOU, SIR!
I'm happy it was useful for you 😀
Well I’ll be dipped!! I’ve been fighting with those universal sockets for years and have had to come up with a certain technique just to get it to work for maybe a half a turn a time. And all this time I never thought of stiffen it up with electrical tape! Thanks for the tip Alvin!
Hi Troy, I fought with the darn things for a long time before a light went off in my head...just tape it up, it's been much easier ever since! 😵💫
Well done. Not so bad getting your hands in there. Your starter rebuilding shop once again saves the day.
Thank you Walter, it wasn't that bad at all, at first glance, it looks like an overwhelming task!
Tackleing this project tomorrow. I appreciate the video!
Just did the starter in my 2006 Jeep Cherokee!! Right on Sir!!! Not a bad job. With your video, using the tools you stated, just 1/2 " Drive ratchet and sockets, job was done in less than an hour, removal AND install of new starter!! Thanks for the tutorial!!
That's great, I'm glad it was helpful to you!
I'm glad you made this video. Saved some $$$!!! Thank you!
Glad you found it useful! Thanks for watching. 😊
Nice job. Very helpful vid. Thanks
Thank you for taking the time to watch my channel. 🙂
Hello Alvin. I know it's not a fun job to do, but you made it look easier. And thanks for the tip on putting tape on the universal socket joint.
George B.
Hi George, it did go well. I've been putting it off for awhile, thinking it would be one of those jobs you wish you didn't start! Lol
Thank you so much, I just changed my starter and this video made it easy.
You're welcome, and thank you for visiting my channel. 😊
I appreciate this video buddy I’m watching it before going and doing the job myself. Everybody else is so negative about this job. I love your positivity bud.
Thank you! I do have my own negative moments, but try not to pass it on to my subscribers.
Hey everyone on my 2009 4.7 , i followed same procedure except I had to take starter out from through the wheel after pulling fender liner back
Thanks brother you def save me over $300 for labor 😂
You are very welcome, I'm happy this video was helpful!
Good tutorial . I’m going to do this soon
Thank you!

Thanks good work i just
Had mine replaced while along wondering if i should have done it myself not much more difficult as i remember my other starter replacement being i will save ur video just incase 😊
Thank you, I'm sure you can do it yourself.
Awesome video, about to replace mine and didn't want to drop the drive shaft. Thank you
You're welcome, good luck with the starter replacement.
Just changed it out today and it only took about 45 minutes just as you said it came out nice and easy. Thanks again great video.
Troubleshooting a no crank no start on the same jeep right now. Hoping I don't have to do this out in the field, but I may. Thanks for the clear video. I was wondering if the wires were accessible with the starter already mounted to the car.
The wires are very difficult to reach with the starter mounted in place, I found it easier to disconnect/reconnect with the starter off.
@@J_R_Shop just finished the job. Agreed, wires are difficult to get to with the starter unmounted, and near impossible with it bolted up.
Unfortunately, still have the no crank condition. The starter relay clicks, but no crank. And if I jump pin 30 to pin 87 where the relay sits, I still have no crank. I have 12v on the lug at the starter, but I didn't measure the trigger wire yet. I guess that's my next task.
When I bought my new starter I was told about that wire the clips on the starter getting rust. I bet that's what was the problem
Corrosion is definitely a problem with these starters. According to the guy that rebuilt this one, these starters lose the ground to the engine, and then start grounding anywhere it can, which starts degrading the internal components., so your guy is not wrong, and has likely seen many of these fail.
How are you laying under the Jeep? Head first from front or from driver side head first? Thanks.
Drivers side in.
How easy or difficult is it to remove skid plate... How many bolts?
The skid plate under the engine has 4 bolts, I believe 13mm...one set, front or back, I can't remember, are key hole slotted, so you only need to loosen them, and remove the other two.
It's made of plastic, so not heavy to remove, just a little awkward.
Where would you safely place your jack stands?
At minimum, I use the pinch welds where you would use the jack, as if you are going to change a tire, as long as there are no major rusting on the car.
If you can get them under the rear dif, and the front control arm mount, that would be safe.
@@J_R_Shop thank you for the quick reply. This would be to replace the starter in an ‘05 grand Cherokee. So all up front.
@@J_R_Shop thanks again!
Nice job teaching an idiot like me! Time for me to raise it up and set the stands and to use the new cuss words I developed! (I wore out the old ones)
Thanks!
I'm glad you found it useful. 🙂
How to know if I need it?
If your battery and connections are all in good condition, and the starter is still slow turning.
was there no heat shield ?
No, if did have one, the engine had been changed in the Jeep before we got it, so it may have had the DIY delete. Lol
@@J_R_Shop what part of sask you from I noticed the plate?
@@countryhick1011 I'm in Warman.
Can you remove the tire for clearance.
Sure...make sure you support the vehicle before going under to work on the starter.
too slow
Hmmm...care to expand on that statement?
@@J_R_Shop i was in a rush to see if you could show the tools needed i changed it out all you have to do is take off the wires then mount bolts and go straight backwards as it sits about a foot then keep the solenoid at top as you take it out its done now so you`ll need 15mm mount bolts 13 for one wire and just pull the small wire it slips on and off. done job now those 3.7 engines are plagued with problems these jeeps need a cummins diesel lmao kidding
but you do a great job in your video i just was in a rush
but its done now so thats why i was in a rush.
If you have one of these cars just sell it….
Why’s that
