      it's not really an actual "lightsaber whip" it's a traditional lightsaber minus the blade with a ton of wires wrapped together in the emitter and the crystal in the hilt creates a energy field around areas of the wires. look up lumiya's lightwhip to see illustrations

      Nobody cares. They were still fucking stupid.
      1) "Light" weapons are made of photons, not plasma. They didn't know it at the time...but it turns out you CAN potentially make self-terminating laser beams that behave like solid objects. We haven't mastered it yet, but we have shown it can be done in a lab. Photons can be entangled to one another and then bound up together in a format that behaves as if it were a massless solid object.
      2) A plasma whip would still be functionally massless, for all your capacity to sense its mass in the first place.
      3) Whips are shitty weapons in any practical sense. They're fine for a tiny handful of violent but non-combat uses, but in an actual fight of any sort...they're wildly inferior.

      @@DoremiFasolatido1979one, you cared enough to leave a multi paragraph comment.
      Two, if you want to bring real world logic into this a regular lightsaber would cause you to explode if they touched you from the sheer amount of energy they produce.
      Hell blaster bolts actually impart more energy on a target than freaking boltors from 40k but you don't see people being blown apart in star wars.
      Three, you don't have precognition, super natural extrasensory perception, the ability manipulate matter through telekinesis, or casually move and react at ftl speeds. Which what every person who uses lightwhips can do.
      Also it's not hard to overcome a lightwhip through armor. They struggle to cut through durasteel, the same shit used for standard vehicle armor and super battledroids.

    • @rawrxdtonepforme9360
      @rawrxdtonepforme9360 Před 2 měsíci +1

      That is not true, like at all. They are covered in an energy jacket that surrounds the physical whip. Or a whip made of energy that has mass. There was only one light whip we saw that had the tassel configuration, basically being a ludicrously oversized flail or flog. The overwhelming majority of lightwhip users just had a standard whip.

    • @rawrxdtonepforme9360
      @rawrxdtonepforme9360 Před 2 měsíci +2

      Also lightsaber blades have mass, aren't made of light, and aren't even plasma in the way we understand it as there are multiple things in star wars called plasma but aren't like real world plasma. Hell they aren't even plasma half the time. There's lightsabers that have lava blades. And yes it's as dangerous as it sounds.

    Lightwhips, in true canon (called "legends" by some), are weaker than regular lightsabers and can't get through armor as easily. They are also unwieldy, requiring you to master the regular whip before even attempting to use a lightwhip and have very poor defense compared to lightsabers. their main advantages over a regular lightsaber is their reach and their rarity, meaning most would not be trained to deal with one.

    • @sr71silver

    • @markfergerson2145
      @markfergerson2145 Před 2 měsíci +11

      Upvoted but-
      Legends material was never ”true canon”. What happened was that Lucas licensed out book and comics rights and the authors were given latitude to stray from what was on screen, to “expand on it”. When asked after some books had come out that not just added to but in a few cases conflicted with on screen canon, Lucas waffled that it wasn’t either canon or non canon. Some people grumbled about that. I’m not one of them because in the tens of thousands of years of Galactic history there’s a lot of room for things that might have happened in the past one way but the retelling got garbled or reinterpreted or suppressed or just made up, and there’s no way to really be sure.
      Then came the first reorganization in which some stuff was declared outright non canon (“Splinter In The Mind’s Eye” comes to mind) while other stuff was canonized and yet more was still in limbo. A lot of people protested that loudly. I am one of those mostly because I felt that certain discarded stuff fit the franchise better than some stuff that was kept.
      Then came his last edict that if it wasn’t on screen it wasn’t canon. People went nuts except for ultra purists. This was about the time Disney bought the property and sort of promised to undo that by creating their own “new canon”, and almost nobody was happy. I sure wasn’t.
      Now we’re here with Disney picking and choosing from Legends material to canonize on screen.
      As far as I can tell the general feeling among Star Wars fans is that Disney is emphasizing cool factor over everything (I’m going to ignore the whole “woke” controversy) with additions like the lightsaber whip to the detriment of the overall story. Them swapping out producers and directors and even corporate executives isn’t helping.
      The bottom line is that it’s not our IP and our headcanon is only that.

    • @FierceDIO
      @FierceDIO Před 2 měsíci +17

      @@markfergerson2145 I just follow the canon hierarchy; the 6 movies are G (George) canon, the expanded material that was created with the express goal of keeping continuity is C (Continuity) canon, the expanded material that wasn't made with that goal but that also doesn't have major contradictions is S (Secondary) canon and the material that was never meant to be canon is N (None) canon. (Also, personal opinion, I put TCW and everything that follows that show's continuity in S to N canon with how many contradictions with the rest of the expanded universe it has.) So, since Disney don't work under Lucas and don't have him approve any of their stories, I would consider all of Disney's "canon" as N canon.

      Pretty sure Num-sabers are also a thing. Just the thing is, the EU really wasn't regulated at all, it was an all-you-can-eat buffet that you might be able to organise a broad direction out of sometimes. But Luca's always said that his movies trumped whatever came out of there because regulating that was functionally impossible.
      That's where Boba Fett, king of Mandolore, beating up a Jedi despite being in his 80's and weakened by cancer/cellular degeneration. Or Xizor with his alarmingly realistic humanoid android/sex doll who is heavily inspired by the Terminator, despite Star Wars generally being a fairly analogue galaxy. That being said if you approach it from the mentality of wanting to eat some good junk food and occasionally finding something delicious. Rogue Squadron was also a pretty cool series.

  • @rolandswift4311

    I actually toyed with the Idea of a lightsaber+lightwhip combination. The difference is; I actually TRIED to make it make sense.
    Take the old EU lightwhip, which was basically a metal cord that was energized in a way that made it look like a lightsaber and could burn/cut in a similar but less effective manner, and attached a standard.
    Only one 'blade' could be active at a time. Swing the whip portion in wide arks like an urumi to fight at mid-range, then switch to the standard blade if they get in too close for the whip to be effective. The whip's cord would always be out, and you'd use it to entangle your opponent like the chain of a kusarigama while fighting with the standard blade before leaping back and re-energizing the cord to cover your opponent with a number of semi-shallow cut/burns.
    Also; like the Urumi; It would be worn by wrapping the cord around the waist like a belt. I made it as a weapon for a Knight of ren in a sort of fan rewright of the suckuel trilogy.

    In the original cannon, Lightsaber Whips have been around pretty much since the beginning & were NOT EXTREMELY OP. There's reason why they don't use them anymore. It was just to easy to hurt yourself, you have to wind-up your strikes, & you couldn't block with it.
    And since it bends, that means all those times you hit him Nate he could've just completely stop the whip it if he had The Force & it couldn't wrap around anything. That means any Force User could easily block you with your slow strikes, & you don't have a way to retaliate against their Lightsaber, or anything really. Then best you could do is run away...
    So it only would work against a non-Force user, but they'd probably be using a blaster & just try & stay out of range of you.
    Lightsaber Whips were only used by a couple Force Users (I can think of 2 random ones I've seen in Novels) that didn't really live too long...

    Also, in the one scene of the light whip we have so far, it looks like it starts as a blade (@2:22 in this video), and is then switched into whip form. If you couldn't block blasters by moving the whip with the force, you could just turn it back into sword form.

    Similar to physical dueling lightsabers having the polycarbonate blades being the path for the leds and structure for a standard blade type.

    I get the feeling that having a blaster alongside your lightsaber would give you an edge against someone using a lightwhip. Because when you're fighting someone lightsaber to lightsaber, they can react to your counter just as quickly as you can defend against their attack, even if you're using a blaster because they can just deflect the blaster bolts, or worse deflect them back at you. But a lightwhip is a much different scenario because like with a regular whip, there's this window where the user has to re adjust in order to attack, due to the flexibility of the whip. So if you can catch your opponent in that window, defending yourself with your lightsaber, you just have to wait for that window to open and then grab your blaster and unload some bolts into his chest. Your opponent won't be able to defend himself due to the time it takes to re adjust the whip to prepare for an attack and deflecting the bolts during this window is out of the question altogether because if he's in the middle of re adjusting the whip, that presents a greater risk to himself and he might lose a limb if not just straight up dice himself into pieces.

    Great video. Can't help thinking that a lightsaber whip like the one shown in the trailer would be incredibly difficult to use, but the lightsaber plasma would cut through pretty much anything, making it difficult to stop before it comes around and hits yourself. You could maybe use the force to control it and protect yourself, but that's gonna need concentration. The most likely outcome of using a lightsaber whip is that it's bound to come around and touch you at some point. And a lightsaber touching you is basically death. Unless you're in disney star wars, where a lightsaber going through both lungs and your heart is just an inconvenience instead.
    Also, having seen what lightsabers do when they touch anything, even metal, you'd struggle to keep the lightsaber whip off the ground (all the whip wielders in this video had it on the ground for around 90% of the time, for example) and as soon as it touched the ground it would melt downwards into the ground. Just imagine activating it in a building and it melting down into the level below and hitting some random person sat there.
    Thinking about it, other than (maybe) a spear, swords are probably the best weapon to model a lightsaber on. Is there anything better?

    so here is my thoughts on blocking with that lightsaber. 2 ways to do this.
    1) there is some button that makes it so it goes rigid, so that when your against blaster people, you can press the button, make it go rigid and do that.
    2) this one is a bit more dangerous, but requires you to have special armor, like beskar, around your off arm. the reason is when people begin shooting at you, you quickly wrap the blade around your hand, wrist, ect, pull it taught and use that to block.

    • @harlannguyen4048
      @harlannguyen4048 Před měsícem

      So, basically make it a chain sword.

    • @scorpionlord9175
      @scorpionlord9175 Před měsícem

      @@harlannguyen4048 basically yes.
      there are issues with the weapon(ignoring the completely and totally lore breaking reasons why this dumb thing shouldve never been added to damn canon).
      so if you cannot make this a rigid blade when you need to block blaster bolts, the other option is, like i said, beskar or whatever around your hand, wrist and arm to your shoulder, wrap it in your hand and pull it taught.

    Keep in mind, there may even be controls to help move the whip, and that it would be nearly weightless on everything but the handle. So, gravity would likely have less pull on it.
    I think the bigger issue with a Lightsaber Whip, without some advanced controls or extensive training, would be hurting yourself.

    Having non rigid lightsabers raises questions about how well a whip would cut if just the 'blade' was resting on something under it's own weight.
    I guess from Phantom Menace we know that *some* force & time is needed to cut through blast doors. How much force is behind a whip that's limp after wrapping around a blade?
    Nate's takes on when things were grazing hits were probably fair in that respect.
    Also, all the physics around a whip is based on the tapering off of its mass along its length, dunno if light whips attempt that or just work using Jedi magic.
    P.p.s. Please wear safety glasses!

    I would like to point out that the physical whip is spending a lot of time on the ground in between strikes because GRAVITY, which means that a lightsaber whip would have to be retracted into the handle for every strike unless the wielder was fine with incinerating the floor. Also this obviously could not be used in confined spaces.

    What's harder, repelling plasma beams back at attackers, or a plasma whip?
    I'm pretty sure light whips were in the original extended novels, but they are a bad idea against a Jedi because if you aren't holding it down like a sword, whoever is the stronger force wielder can just grab the whip with telekinesis and thrust it at you.

  • @chriscollins2095

    Apparently the lightsaber whip in The Acolyte can switch between being a whip and a standard lightsaber blade. So you wouldn't really have any problem defending against blaster bolts with that one 🤷‍♂. Then again, given how easy it is to hit yourself with them, and how hard they are to control in the first place, I would expect Jedi to manipulate them telekinetically, anyhow. But I don't know if that's actually the case, or not 🤷‍♂.

    Even wayyyyyy back in the 1970's marvel comics days when they first pulled out that b-s light-whip, I immediately hated the very concept largely for the same reasons as Tyranth. Physics in star wars are already impossible at worst and implausible at best but the whip breaks even the internal laws and logic the universe has established. It would be like a character showing up in a medieval fiction story with a telikinetically controlled chain link sword in a world with no established magic or special abilities. The only version I can kind of see is the newer takes that involve a bunch of linked flexible "emitters" in the form of cylindrical interconnected links that emit plasma 360 degrees around them to at least partially explain the flexibility. This design would also make far more sense as an innately weaker design than a normal saber as this core of emitters would result in a less intense plasma "blade / edge" and perhaps the weapon could be more easily overloaded by a normal saber, risking damage to the emitter links and thus severeing / disabling the weapon. It would actually be a cruder and simultaneously more complicated design with an insanely high number of additional points of potential failure. Also as mentioned, while it may be devastating against a normal saber, anyone with a high fire rate blaster can easily swiss cheese the whip wielder. It makes no sense as a weapon but if they HAVE to include it, it may be best as a unique, case / scenario specific weapon and not a sole primary weapon. I'd definitely carry a normal saber and blaster if I had to use the whip.

    To quote: “THIS IS NOT FUCKING CANON!” Introducing things like lightsaber whips just detracts from the mystique and uniqueness of the lightsaber weapon. Same thing with the shape of the Darksaber. It just goes too far, turning the whole thing into some debased weapon technology… next thing you know, there’s a vehicle with built-in lightsabers for ramming. Because why not? I mean, double-bladed sabers are okay, and having a fencing-style hilt like Dooku doesn’t really change the essence of the weapon. But LS katanas with a bent blade? Nope. Invisible LS blades? Get OUT. These things are just the products of deranged minds slobbering down fanfiction while furiously pleasing themselves to the idea of how 'ingenious' they are.

      Considering that the Lightwhip was introduced in July of 1985 in the Marvel Star Wars Comic, these have been in Star Wars for a long time. They even appear in the novels "The Courtship of Princess Leia" and "Darth Bane: Path of Destruction," which were written in 1994 and 2006 respectively. So... I'm going to note that your rant is rather misplaced because the Lightwhip has been a part of Star Wars almost as long as there has been a Star Wars.
