You removed hydrogen from the hydroxide groups (OH) and added NO2 groups to the oxygen. The NO2 group weighs much more than the hydrogen.

LIKE THIS TO SAVE GRANT FROM LUNG CANCER: I know its cool and all to have plumes of smoke, but really Grant, you should design some sort of fume hood for on top of the work bench. You could probably use a shop vac and some vacuum lines to a glass fume hood/reaction vessel if you are doing this inside still.

I don't think that would work, seen as how the toilet paper is *paper* and the cotton balls are *cotton*. Would be cool to see though.

Aplip you could roll out the entire roll the treat the entire roll of toilet paper then roll it all the was up and it would be perfect
Aplip it would be easier to make a long strip of flash paper and putting it around an empty tp roll than trying to soak the entire roll of a dissolvable substance

Here's a couple suggestions for things to do with flash cotton:
1.) See how it reacts under pressure, possibly as a propellant for one of your cannons.
2.) Try making flash-cotton yarn and using your rope making machine to see how a tight wrapping/multiple layers effects the burn.
It has been done...or attempted the Lorenz rifle from the 1860s

it has been a long, tiring day. you have came home from work and you sit down on you sofa lazily. You're watching tv and a random ad comes on. You think about skipping it but you don't. the catch slogan sings:

On the television screen you see the package. It's colours are yellow; black and white. The logo is a triangle with a crown in it. the words "GRANT THOMPSON TAMPONS" the box is mostly black. You notice the advert mutters " these tampons are the best for any moment, If it's from the surprise to magic." Why does it say magic, you said to yourself. At the bottom of the screen, where all adverts say stuff like 'warning this could put you in danger', it says :
WARNING: these tampons are the world's only pyro-technic tampons... DO NOT PUT IN THE FEMALE BODY ( could cause real irritation inside ) use for magic and fun. USE CAUTIOUSLY. NOT SUITABLE FOR YOUNG HUMAN BEINGS.
You panic. You are trying to find you car keys. You race down to the nearest shopping mall. You ask at the pharmacy for "pyro-technic tampons". They give you the odd stare.

you need to detonate it, not burn it..... stick a small ball of the nitro cellulose on an anville and whack it with a lump hammer... or use a primer from a bullet.
we used to make nitro cellulose back when we were in school it's also known as gun cotton.
you get a huge energy release if you detonate it.

try building a type of launcher for the flashcotton balls so that you can shoot little fireballs :D

TheSphereHead Have you looked up the thermite launcher? Thermite is basically powdered rust and aluminum. It can be ignited with a magnisium flare or similarly high temperature device.

Its a deflagrant, not an explosive, but if confined in a container it could develop significant pressure and be dangerous. Nitrocellulose is a common ingredient in smokeless powders. If relatively pure cellulose is used and the nitration reaction is run to completion there would be virtually no ash and smoke.
richhagenchicago nah mate nitrocellulose is definatley a HE if u use an effective enough detonator, it detonates at around 7300 m/s much higher then TNT.

kinetic sand burns at those temps, but would be similar to Grants earlier video using playdough to cast in.

To control for the moisture content, you'd want to dessicate the cotton before both weighings. You can get silica gel cat litter, leave it in a warm oven to drive out all the water it's already absorbed, and then put it in an airtight storage box (Tupperware, Rubbermaid). Pop the cotton in the box for an hour or two, and Bob's your uncle.

Won't work. Ceramic won't "melt' under anything Grant has used. However it will crack or shatter. Ceramic has a melting point of around 1500 Celsius (2732 Fahrenheit) give or take. Special Ceramics have a melting point of up to 3900 Celsius (7052 Fahrenheit).
