  • U.S. journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, detained in Russia for six months for failing to register as a "foreign agent", has insisted she will walk free "as an innocent person." Kurmasheva, who works for RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service, is additionally charged with spreading misinformation about the Russian military. The charges are widely seen as reprisals for her journalistic work.

    Tragically, Russia is holding her as a hostage, I fear for her safety. I hope she survives and will be released sooner rather than later. Putin's Regime must be held accountable for all its crimes.

      Cathy Young (The Bulwark) said it best;
      Gonzalo Lira was not a journalistic hero but a grifter and propagandist for a regime that kills and imprisons journalists. Dead, the best way to neutralize his potential martyrdom is full transparency.
      From her article; Anti-Ukraine Chorus Seeks to Exploit an American’s Death
      Subtitle;
      Gonzalo Lira was a pro-Putin propagandist. Even so, the questions about his death require transparency.
      You try to imply an equivalence between Ukraine and Russia on treatment of Journalists which does not exist, citing one very questionable case and no others.

    For all you trolls: Ukraine has a Jewish President, a Muslim Minister of Defense, and NO political prisoners. Russia's prisons are full of political prisoners and prisoners of "conscience", who don't believe in attacking neighboring countries, and who desire peace and prosperity within Russia. Gonzalez Lira was arrested in Ukraine for spreading vicious anti-Ukraine propaganda. He was in ill health. He was arrested, but treated in a hospital, and was NEVER abused or mistreated. Ukraine abides by the rules of the Geneva Convention.

      Nice, but you are going to 'confuse' very few of they type making those comments (none of the propagandists, many of which know they are lying, and which is the largest percentage of such drivel) with facts and logic. If people operated on those principles Russia would be a very different place, especially if you included empathy and concern. Actually, the entire world would be a much better place. Don't hold your breath. But like you, I try to make a difference, so I'm not trying to dissuade you, by any means.
      As far as Ukrainian govt Nazism, there was a well know Rabbi, not from Russia or Ukraine that addressed that topic, in precisely the manner you would hope to hear. He said that the claim that Ukraine's govt was run by neo-Nazis was patently absurd, at least that was the gist of his statement. It was made on Marjorie Traitor Green's twitter feed, if you want to see it. It was in response to her idiotic post about something to do with the current or previous aid bills being antisemitic. If you want to see antisemitic, just read her posts back through the last few months.

And with respect to this Gonzalez Lira activist person you mention (hopefully with an actual toilet?) and especially during the current, active, ongoing state of genocidal siege invasion... hopefully after the whole war madness is finally quiet, we can all resurface - being more normal again in expressing our various differing human views. Why any non Russian (or Russian, for that matter) would reside in Russia right now is beyond me. Her poor children and husband. This is so tragic and an extreme judicial abuse of a misrepresented executive Law. This woman is powerful and beautiful in her courage and sense of basic life through the lens she was clearly given from birth.
    Truly, we as humans should all be born naturally with an innate fight in us, to strive to be fair minded, progressive activists in all life attributes.
    But regardless, a Political oppositional view is a crime? Only warring opposing armies throughout history have an entitled right to forge our common human future??
    Let's all please try to be a little more human, in pursuing a modern-era way and try to seek better balance! We are so out of balance and it's a real tragedy and totally unnecessary today.
    We must show our true strength potential and leadership core and perform better on this dramatic little world stage together among the billions of worlds.

    Everyone held in countries hostile to America, must be seen as moles who are there, working with those hostile governments, as a bargaining chip, so they can apply pressure on America. I would tell these people, once they are released to head to the nearest US embassy, but everyone who visits these countries, should not expect to be rescued.
