The reason the play button is beside the magnify dial is to quickly magnify the view - brilliant !

Yeah, Pentax became "think different" nowdays, a gem among boring same things.

I have to agree. I started out with Nikon DSLR's but switched to Fujifilm when the fashion demanded. But eventually got fed up with the slow reaction times and the EVF. So I started looking at DSLR's again. I had in mind to try the D500 but as Nikon have kept the price artificially high, I started to look elsewhere. I am so glad I went for the Pentax K3iii. Now I am a proud Pentax Investigator (A Pentax Investigator is anyone who searches for picture compositions with a Pentax, and nothing but a Pentax will do). Happy investigations people.

14:30 - Eric, totally agree that the feature list of the K-3 III is massive, but depth-of-field bracketing is not the same as automatic focus stacking (the latter not being a feature of the Pentax). The camera will just take a preconfigured series of shots with varying apertures that will give you different depth-of-field options, which is a pretty cool feature in its own right. Otherwise, pretty cool summary you did there.

I sometimes mix them up as well. Looked at cameras that do focus stacking, but reviews indicate it is anyway still best done manually.

    HI Eric,
I am using K-3 III since day one as I pre-ordered my own as soon as this was possible. It cannot match a top-level mirrorless cameras in terms of AF point numbers, people/vehicle/animals/plants/turtles/electric eels/politicians and celebrities dedicated tracking modes, ability to PAINT your picture in case if one forget to release the shutter or even to take his/her camera from home, it cannot shoot 512 frames per second and is not ready to transform in pro-grade video camera if needed... But it is still a great piece of advanced, ergonomic and extremely well-built photographic tool. The unique ability of this camera is that It will push you slightly towards understanding what you are doing... You still can be a total newbie and with some learning here and there get fantastic images from this camera, but Pentax will constantly asking you for a little bit more joy, experiments, understanding and creative decision even if you are an advanced photographer. It will still make you a better one in your own pace and for you own satisfaction....
I am messing with photography for over 40 years now. I was a photojournalist, documentalist, little bit an artist, and now I am just a hobbyist who using the camera as an excuse to move my old bag of bones and discover new places, meet new people and understand what I can see. I used all top brands, medium format, large format, pin-hole cameras, and I was able to buy any camera I want in pretty wide range of brands and models - but my well judged choice was the Pentax K-3 III. So, thank you for this video because it confirms that I am not totally crazy (yet)
    🙂

To exaggerate: current cameras don't even need to be pointed at a subject anymore, just tell them what you want and they use AI to create the perfect picture. I think that a growing niche of people will return to DSLR for its imperfections. I tried full analog but in the end I was sitting behind my computer to scan film, so DSLR is actually a nicer overall analog-style experience (with lower running costs).

Great video. I'll be getting a the K-3 III soon. I've tried mirrorless, but being an old guy, I have to have that optical viewfinder.

The pixel shift in Pentax cameras works differently to other brands. Instead of giving greater resolution, it moves the sensor by one pixel so that an exposure is taken for each colour filter (one red, one blue and two green). It then combines the resulting image so that all photosites have the full colour information, rather than being interpolated between pixels. This is somewhat akin to using a Foveon sensor, though that uses colour depth within the photosites to give full colour information with just one exposure.

Pentax, according to another YT video I watched, are following Leica's lead. Leica are sticking with the rangefinder and will never depart from it whilst Pentax have stated they will only produce DSLRs.

As I am using glasses, I wished Pentax would make the eye cub stick further out, and I think they should have included some kind of tilting screen for the price the camera commands!
    Great review.

FA35/2 has quite ugly hexagonal bokeh. I liked that lens a lot and I still have it, but since I bought Sigma 35/1.4 there is no way back for any serious shooting. Another problems are purple fringing, some CA. And the lens needs about F2.8 to provide more resolution for hi-res 24-26mpix APS-C cameras. On the other hand that Sigma wipes it right from wide open to F1.4 and around same F2 it provides significantly better image.

Pentax camera's are bulletproof! I accidentely dropped my k70 on the street (it fell out of my back while running to catch my train). The camera is fine even has a little dent in it from the impact. The 55-300mm lens not so much...

Marketing and branding is definitely a weakness for Pentax. They have a fantastic product that photographers nowadays barely know about. I think it's truly a missed opportunity that Ricoh seems to have near zero intrest in selling their product in northern Europe. There's no camera I'd trust more in freezing conditions over a Pentax DSLR.

    • @EricGibaud
      @EricGibaud  Před rokem
