  • Manie Libbok or Handre Pollard | Springboks Selection Nightmare
With the business end of the Rugby World Cup fast approaching, the Springboks have a lot to think about regarding who they should select at 10, and what each option can bring to the table.
The injury to Malcolm Marx brought about a vacancy in the Springbok's 33 man squad early on in the pool stages of the Rugby World Cup.
Instead of replacing Marx with a specialist hooker, coach Jacques Nienaber opted to draft in Handre Pollard.
This is not a completely unexpected call, as current flyhalf Manie Libbok has been struggling a lot off the tee and support kickers Cheslin Kolbe and Faf De Klerk, have not been much use either.
So the fact that the Springboks have brought in the likes of Pollard into a knock out competition such as the RWC, shouldn't really come as a surprise to many.
It doesn't take a rugby guru to realise that any team without a high percentage goal kicker is making life very very hard for themselves if they wish to progress beyond the quarters and semi's of this competition.
Let's take a look at both these flyhalves in further detail and how the Springboks could potentially utilise the strengths of both these players in the competition.
We'll analyse both Manie Libbok and Handre Pollard's strengths and weaknesses according to the following categories:
    Goal kicking
    Attack
    Defense
    Tactical kicking
    Leadership
Let us know what you think the best way forward for the Boks should be.

Guys, with the Springboks under Rassie and Jacques, it's not about Handre vs Manie, but about Handre and Manie vs the world. These Springboks work for each other. Organisations can learn a lot from Rassie and Jacques. Super proud of you guys

I don’t care who is chosen but you have to have a great goal kicker in the team to win a World Cup. That is nr 1 priority. Think Back at Percy Montgomery. I think how they have it now is great. Bring Pollard on the second halve.

This is a great watch, after the event, eh. Both awesome players, both contributed so much in the WC and as you said, bringing Handré on to laser those kicks through was the difference that helped win it for the fantastic Boks. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed watching them play this World Cup...and i'm not even a Boks fan.

I would do ist exactly the other way around. Start with Handre, make use of his better defensive work, get some secure points through his safer kicking and bring Manie at around 50 mins, when the opponent is getting tired to make the most of his higher speed and better attacking style in open game.

I thought they are building the attack play around Manie? I think how they have it is best. To kick later in the game is more pressure and Pollard is the better kicker to goal statistically speaking. These are tight games. The boks does not seem to play well tactically. They are seldom in the opponents 22. They need to figure out how to get there more often.

Yeah, I agree we should rather just keep Manie as the starting 10 at the moment and give the Boks a mandate to score tries rather than kick at goal with him.
I know people might say Pollard builds score board pressure but the reality is most of the time with Pollard we don't actually go into half time ahead. Saw a stat that pointed out that with Manie we go ahead into half time 71% of the time where as with Pollard we go ahead 20% of the time.
Pollard in general performs better in the 2nd half where as Manie's influence tends to fall out of the game after 65 mins when the team is tired.

Libbok is a quality player, but on the back foot he struggles a bit. (I associate this with the Stormers, and their Hot/Cold performances) You might see a bit more creativity out of Polly in the coming weeks, primarily because the Boks as a whole have been working on attack. We are fortunate to have 2 really talented flyhalves. And I get the sense Polly might be the one to better convert points when on the opposition try line. Great Vid!
