Actually, Queen Elizabeth had thick layers of lead-made makeup to cover severe smallpox scars (and to make her face white and beautiful of course). Eventually the poison in her makeup ate away some of her skin so she had to get thicker and thicker layers which would make the effects worse since the flesh was literally being eaten away.
Her lipstick had also mercury in it, as some of the comments mention.
Her paintings show us a most likely "manipulated" version of reality, since she would only have her paintings done IF the artists only painted her as a true beauty. When she was older and her skin was extremely deteriorated, artists would copy the portaits of Elisabeth's youth in order not to annoy the queen.

That's actually contested - although the depth of her ceruse may have increased as she got older - the claim for 'thick' layers is not supported - there are very few contemporary testimonies to Elizabeth’s supposed ceruse overuse. Those that do are likely to have political/religious intent - eg they were made years later by a Catholic priest and were designed to denigrate her. It is true though that her later portraits were based on younger versions of her. She contracted small pox around the age of 29 - so for many years she would not have had those scars.
Not all her lipsticks would have been vermilion (mercuric sulfide), carmine/cochineal (from insects) or madder (plants) were popular colours too.
We truthfully don't really know exactly what she looked like. Accounts from the time vary (pale skin, swarthy skin) as such comments were always political.

In each episode she would be dressed to reflect the style, mood, and period of the subject without being too literal about it. It was one of the best parts of the show to see how she managed that. She's super creative!

As a historian, I believe that we must learn all we can about a time period--not just important political events but also the social aspects of people's lives. This would include learning about the makeup, dress, food etc. That way we see the past (as much as we can) through the eyes of those who lived in those times. It makes people not just names on a page but as actual human beings. More of this, please!
I totally agree. The fashions of the time tell about trade, the economy and the culture.
Seeing the whole picture is essential in understanding the mindset of people in the past. It really bothers me when so many make judgments based on our present way of thinking. One has to understand the totality of the past. It makes for a richer experience. From peasant to monarch-each facet makes up a wonderful tapestry.
I think you'd love Karolina Zebrowska's channel. She remade these 100 years of fashion videos, but put much more effort into getting the looks exactly right and giving backround info about the time and how it influenced what people were wearing.

There are really nice serum bb creams out there that are fine and non clogging. Light cushion bb creams are fairly nice for sensitive people.
What kind of foundations are you using? It sounds like you buy cheap stuff and don't wash your face.
If u are using foundation's that damage ur skin then u are doing makeup wrong.

That's just not accurate. Primers keep foundation from settling into pores and a simple exfoliating scrub will remove whatever might get left behind. Foundation is also almost always water based these days with less and less being oil based or containing alcohol. Modern foundation is perfectly safe and will not harm your skin.

I'm a massive sucker for Queen E and I think she's one of history's most misunderstood people. She's often portrayed as this evil bitch, who was merely driven by her envy of Maria Stuart. But I think this narrative says more about the remaining prevalence of sexism, than it says about these two women. I liked this video because it was informative and it was probably the first time I saw her portrayed as a woman with her own style and sensibility - not just in relation to her competition.
