    The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era is a 1-4 player cooperative tabletop adventure set during Tamriel's Second Era - specifically during the events of the Planemeld, as the Order of the Black Worm plots to secure the Amulet of Kings. As the dark cult schemes, however, one of its members is planning an even darker betrayal, one that will tie Tamriel in with Oblivion forever. Adventurers work to uncover her machinations and stop her plot amid a bevy of endlessly replayable content. As in The Elder Scrolls video games, players will travel on an epic journey, balancing exploration, character building, dungeon diving and close quarters combat.
    Each adventure in the game takes place over the course of three gameplay sessions, with sessions being roughly one hour per player in length. Players customize and control a single hero throughout all three sessions of an adventure as they manage multiple skill lines, classes and experience the many regions of Tamriel, each with their own unique flavor and mechanics. Experience points are handed out generously, allowing players to build interesting and unique characters in the consolidated timespan required in a tabletop experience. Session to session progression is meaningful, but players are not required to remember complex narrative points or play with the same group forever.

    3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.

    2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
    2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
    1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend

    I'm excited for this game!
    When you both mentioned how you could tell chip theory is pulling in aspects of their other games, I immediately thought of the stealth system in Burncycle. I don't know what skill lines or guilds they have in the base game or future expansions, but I hope they add in a dark brotherhood or thieves guild expansion (with a stealth skill line). They could have quests to sneak into a town or city to steal something or assassinate a specific target without being seen.

      Cloudspire is completely different from TMB and actually I don't see much of it in this Elder Scrolls. TMB and ES are both full cooperative adventure game of character building and fight. Cloudspire is a sort of wargame, with strong element of tower defense and very unique system of your unity control (with enormous variability, different powers, way to improve your army and your commander). Then I also reccomend you to take a look into Cloudspire that guaratees a completely different gameplay experience (and is an excellent competitive game also and not only solo/coop) before to choose to invest time and money in a game that could be better than TMB but that is definitely quiete similar

  • @Linnir
    @Linnir Před rokem +2

    This game certainly has character building as you have helpfully explained. I get the idea of the 3 scenarios arc. Is there a bigger story and campaign? So does your character only last for 3 scenarios and then you start anew or do you have one character that can last long term?

    • @BoardGameCo
      @BoardGameCo  Před rokem +1

      From what we've seen, your character only lasts those three scenarios, but I'm not sure if there are other plans.

    • @ChipTheoryGames
      @ChipTheoryGames Před rokem +12

      @Linnir - We wanted the constant endorphin rush of unlocking and building a character to be a part of the game at all times. This meant a shorter 3 scenario campaign. At that point, your build is largely maxed out. The guild you work for and the region of the game you're in dictate the quests and perspectives of the larger overarching story you're participating in. The idea is that by building new characters, working for new guilds, and exploring new regions, you'll explore the finer points of the overall plot rather than one A -> Z narrative that is difficult to replay.

  • @seansmith2650
    @seansmith2650 Před rokem +1

    I think the one thing chip theory gets wrong in too many bones for me is boss battles. The journey is amazing but then you get to the final boss and if you don't get it in one or two turns you're dead. Did you feel like bosses in elder scrolls offered a varied challenge compared to the base scenario but also not needlessly difficult?

    • @BoardGameCo
      @BoardGameCo  Před rokem

      Unfortunately, I cannot speak to that, we only have the one scenario demoed, which means I don't have enough experience to confidently say whether that's an issue or not

  • @uxjared
    @uxjared Před rokem +1

    I kind of wish Chip Theory would get away from its ironclad production model. There's a point where neoprene is just silly and more cumbersome than cardboard (hex map tiles) and where chips are less immersive than alternatives. We get it, Chip is in the name, but your games can be bigger than the original marketing.

    Hoplomachus Victorum (my first CTG game) is fun and has the perfect amount of "moving parts" for a sologame IMO, though im not highly impressed with how repetitive and stale it gets at times. I dont want more components but wouldnt mind more advanced combat rules, and bigger maps.
    As for Elder Scrolls, it looks to feature such an massive amounts of pieces, managing and playing seems more like a chore and all that for what they claim is less "tactical" than Victorum...This has me very hesitant.
