Good lord. 20 years. I'm 32 and I first heard him with my highschool flame. I've grown up with him and it's so fucking hard to believe 20 years have passed.
I'm near enough 18, graduating in literally 5 hours and I found him a little ways through my Junior year and my taste and guitar playing hasn't been the same since then, he was of another world and even though I didn't exist at the same time during him he still echoes in almost everything I do
A good old fashioned fight! What a line! What an image to create a sense of longing for! Elliott was amazing in all departments of songwriting - his playing, his melodies, his modulations, his words. Topped off with a voice that was so authentic and fragile. He sounded like how it felt to feel those things. That is one thing that can not be taught. Just amazing. Thanks for the videos
Beautiful. Very good points too. I love that song but I hadn't tried to learn it yet. Those high notes make all the difference. It adds a romanticism to it.
Really good demonstration, I started listening to him only after he died too, seeing him live is probably one of my top 2 or 3 things I'd love to see that's not possible. His chord changes are my favorite thing
If you like Elliott's playing you should check out Dave Matthews on Crush and Harry Nillson on something Without Her. Both similar to Elliott in delivery. I got into Elliott just before he died and his death was truly a shock. Despite my love of his music I have never really seriously tried to play anything by him ..... yet.
This is amazing. I’ve tried learning this song before and I couldn’t quite get the third chord to sound right. I subbed! Would love to see you go into more detail on other Elliott Smith techniques (if you wanted to of course!)
Damn the ol carpel tunnel does not like stretching that far.....lol. You are right though, beautiful chords, and the strumming is what really sells it......but I'll need to do some hand aerobics before I can easily make those chord changes. ;)
cool channel, i do wanna add that it really sounds like hes playing c6 and d6 instead of the standard A shape bar chord c and d( hes adding the high e in the bar on the 5th fret for c and 7th fret for d). to me once you try it, every other way just doesnt seem right
i love this song, but i was so excited you were going to play No Name #2 (which i like slightly more) so i was still kinda dissapointed. i love you anyhow

This is my all-time favorite Elliott Smith song! Such a bittersweet and melancholy tune; I adore this sound.

His chord voicing is so brilliant.

Agree. Absolutely beautiful voicing.
could you make a tutorial on how you emulate Elliiott's picking/strumming? your playing here is so clean and beautiful.
Hi! Thank you. I just publish another Elliott video. Check my channel!
That is such a beatiful song. I didn't know those were the chords he played until I saw your video. Thank you!
Agreed. I’ve been playing it wrong! Thank you. Been a fan since 1996. Really wish we had music like this now.
Thank you for your time and energy spent, that chord has always struck me deeply.
I think Billy Corgan also plays that chord in Sweet Sweet
Thank you. Nice job. Elliot was a special musician. He was a great lyricist, too.
❤love elliott i just turned 20 myself this year 😄
Love your videos where you dive into his techniques, songwriting, etc.
Great video, this was one of the first Elliott Smith songs I learned. His voicings were unmatched.

Great stuff - Im currently producing a short film regarding some
of Elliot’s music videos, to be released later this year on the 20th anniversary…
Cool! Let us know when its released! Good luck
Can you post a tutorial of lets get lost?
Sure! The first chord is lovely!
I’m gonna make more Elliott videos soon!

i love this song, but i was so excited you were going to play No Name #2 (which i like slightly more) so i was still kinda dissapointed. i love you anyhow
he also uses that chord in better be quiet now
What model Gibson is that?
this song is actually in drop d. it's a lot easier to play that way
Not drop D, it’s in D standard with a capo on the 2nd fret.
Great tutorial but this is no name #3 not 2
Jag önskar fan hans musik, finns inget bättre 🙌
