  • This 1979 Chevrolet promotional film, titled " 1979 Chevy, Ford & Dodge Van Comparison ", was sent to the Chevrolet car dealerships to be used as an in-house Sales and customer training film. This film highlights technical aspects and features of the new model year: Such as power windows, a storage compartment, anti-skid strips in the door sills (grip tape), a roof vent, and the best one yet, a security system with a key. The emphasis is on how much better the Chevy is over the competition. A definite riot.
If you look up a different film I posted, titled "1974 Chevy Selling Monte Carlo ", you can see a rare glimpse of the film cartridge viewer that was used at the dealership where the customers and personnel were to view these films. The machine was made by Technicolor and called the " Chevrolet Mini Theater System "
This film came from my personal collection. This film was not downloaded from any website and is not reused content. This restoration is my work. The restoration process started with removing the super8 film from the Technicolor Cartridge. After removal the film was cleaned, repaired, and spooled onto a standard film reel. This film had many scratches and dust marks along with severe color fade. The scanning to digital process and basic color correction was performed on the Lasergraphics Scanstation motion picture film scanner system in 2k resolution. Excess film grain noise was removed and the images upscaled to 4K resolution utilizing Topaz AI software. Then in 4K, extensive color restoration was performed in Davinci Resolve. Scratches and dust marks along with advanced noise removal was performed using NeatVideo. Then a second and final color restoration and image stabilization was performed in DaVinci Resolve. Finally, the film was downscaled back to 2k for uploading to CZcams. As I work on these films, I try to improve the process as I go along. Thanks for watching.

This video has led me to make an informed decision as to which vintage van I will buy when I go back in time to the mid 70s.

My parents had a 1979 Dodge Tradesman B200 Van. I enjoyed as a kid in the 80's. They bought it brand new from Glen E Thomas Dodge in Long Beach Ca. in 1979. I don't recall them having any issues of notable concerns in the last several years of having it. It had a sink and refrigerator inside. It was sold to my aunt in 1988. My parents wound up buying a 1988 Dodge Caravan LE ( non extended model ). Although I really liked that van I really missed the Tradesman. Unfortunately the Caravan had an issue. Within less than a year it was returned to Cerritos Dodge where they bought if and returned hassle free under lemon law statutes. As my parents are now in their 80's and I can attest to one thing - they've always believed in American name vehicles. Now I am hearing that GM may leave the country to avoid bankruptcy. Watching this clip was very pleasing. I will be 44 in November and I honestly cannot believe how much has been detracted from chrome to interior furnishings from vans in the past two decades.

The Dodge van should have been a B350. Also with Dodge you can get the Maxivan.

E-150 was not a 3/4 ton. Make it a fair fight GM and provide the E-250 for comparison. Also, GM just couldn't stand they didn't have an extended length van until 1988 and couldn't compete as well not having a big block displacement engine during the '70s (Only the 400 while Chrysler and Ford had the 440 and 460). Ford has been the king of vans for a long time and will keep on being king

I've always felt like the Chevy Van 20 and Dodge Van B200 were never a 3/4 ton! (Maybe a heavy 1/2 ton like the Ford E150) Note the 5lug wheels and GM 8.5" 10bolt rear end or the Chrysler 8.25" or 9.25" rear axle. The Ford E150 is a heavy 1/2 ton, 5lug wheels and Ford 9" rear axle.

The first comparison, sailboat mast "standard long wheelbase models" I wonder how many Chevy lawyers reviewed that copy? Plenty I'm guessing. With all of those vans: winter road salt rotted all of them out in the northeast, all were extremely unpleasant to ride in, especially in the back, all were horrible to do any engine work on, really difficult to impossible. Gas mileage? there was still a gas crisis on at the time, performance? Nope, especially trying to tow a trailer. Chevy was probably very happy most all company owners got rid of those vans within four years, they were awful.

The 79 was a camper, the 78 a worker that my dad kicked the shit out of for 7 yrs. Wish i had that 79 today. Still looking for one to convert like the 79!!

Ford has always had better Chassis under there trucks and vans. Gm vehicles especially k10 trucks were prone to cracking frames behind gear boxes, shock mounts and other areas. Tracey from "TRUCKS" shows these issues on "stunt double" ..... i own a k10. The Fords were defintley brutally stronger in and around the Frames. The 9inch Ford rear Axle was also MUCH stronger than GM's weak junk 10 and 12 bolt rear axles.
