Great job Stan, you might get better accuracy by putting an index mark on your mill spindle and on the probe body so that it goes into the collet the same orientation every time. Otherwise any collet runout will change how well the probe runs true to the spindle centerline each time you put it in.

I wasn't sure where this video or tool was going at first but man, what a cool device.

Nice gadget there, I just built myself one for my little CNC mill at work, just a quick kludge made from PCB material and screws I had laying around resulting in runout of about ten thousands of an inch.
Making some parts on a lathe would give way better results but I'm satisfied with this quick and dirty solution.

    Hi Stan,
That's a nice integration with the DRO.
For those on a lower budget, or those without a matching DRO, look into a 3D Taster. Yes, they really are called a 'taster', they originated in Germany and it means 'touch'.
The Haimers are still quite expensive, but I have a Tschorn version (also German) that's much more affordable.

Nice new tool for the shop.

  • @AmateurRedneckWorkshop

That is a handy tool. I would guess it only works with a dro pro dro. Keep on keeping on.

    Thanks, I think.
4 years ago, a toolmaker friend gave me a home brew probe for my Newell. He made a couple dozen and sold them to the poverty stricken small shop owners to rave reviews. So it's bound to be first rate down to the rhodium plated contacts. Mine is still in the box un-messed with. No incentive otherwise. My indicol and edge finder all work just fine.
You got metal curious. This was gonna be a lazy Sunday. Now I'm compelled to dig it out and hook it up, get it working. My lazy Sunday is shot and it's your fault

Can you advise which Federal indicator you are using? I really like how it seems to operate and the size. Thanks, Rick

Will that touch probe fit other DRO's or just DRO Pros ?
I wonder how many other manufacturers there are ?

This may sound dumb Stan, but why the use of a ruby ball on the flex stem? Hardness? Temp stable?
Thank you for the accuracy demo. Cheers.

Not dumb at all, fragile or soft metals will mark or get "burnished" with a standard tip, sliding a carbide ball across aluminum will leave a visible line on your freshly finished surface.
