The lens issue is something the GxAce brought up in his X100V review. And that is that the shutter can't keep up with the shutter speed fully open. You've got to stop down to 1/2000 or 1/1000 (can't remember) to not getting the blades to show up in the bokeh. Maybe you can ask Casey about that.
I think the Bokeh issue is related more to the leaf shutter? Personally, having owned both the V and VI… having ibis is a game changer especially for video. I was reluctant to use the V for video, but now it’s so much fun shooting short clips, having IBIS, SOOC videos (with a built in ND filter!) that look amazing
I love my x100vi but I always been thinking of the Nikon ZF lately as it could be a one and done camera and replace my Canon and Fuji and have that retro look everyone loves the Fuji for

I fully agree that Fujifilm needed to upgrade some stuff before the megapixels, but that's very Fujifilm. They've been playing around with stacked sensors without significantly improving the AF to support it. They've been playing with BSI sensors, but upgrading the resolution just enough that the BSI low light advantages are negligible or cancelled out, and now a high megapixel sensor they don't really have the lens designs to support. They seem to jump on emerging tech on paper, but are suboptimised in real world situations. Granted, the T5 has more of a chance to hold its own with the new 1.4 primes, but if you have to get full frame big and heavy, then you might as well go for the Nikon. I feel like this is the same V from 2019, but just the high resolution R version, sold as a new upgrade rather than an alternate variant of the V. They needed to do more to bring the X100 into this decade. 😢
If you stay below 1/1000 shutter speed and in mechanical mode, your background blur/separation gets buttery smooth without the twirl issue you mentioned
You're right on the money here, Cam. I run the GFX100 II and the X-H2 for work and I loved my X100V but the VI just misses, one thousand percent. No flash upgrade? Old battery? Same exact lens? It's disappointments all around and feels like the first true cash grab from Fujifilm in the last several years. Big bummer. Great call outs here!
The only issue I do have with the X100V and VI are the +10 buttons you have to click before turning on the flash ON or OFF. You can bind a button for its settings (Like I do on AEF/AEL) but you CANNOT bind the ON/OFF flash setting. This upsets me the most. Also I LOVE the integrated flash. No shadows, good feel, good look. But like you said, it takes ages to be able to clickclickflasflash again. Again the battery is at fault here. One thing I've found useful is cranking the Isos really High, very small exposure time etc. That allows me to shoot with the flash at 1/8. But yeah, not very cool for all uses.
The swirly bokeh is on x100v as well with leaf shutter. I believe it's when using leaf shutter over 500 or 1000 you'll notice it so best to use ND and stay under that shutter speed
Great video, 40mp not required, faster card slot are required, flash recycling, better lens etc the thing I worry about is some people have a lens sharp until F8 and some have sharp from F8 - F11 so not sure about quality. Get mine soon anyway lol
Fair points! It’s definitely a Mark II and that’s great for me considering I couldn’t get my hands on a V (so had to stick with my trusty F). But now I’ve got the VI, the quality of life upgrades (presumably made in the V) have made the camera far better than my F. For me, I disagree that the Zf is a valid alternative and that’s due to the size. I never wear a neck strap for cameras and just chuck the VI in a crossbody or in my jacket pocket and the Zf is simply too big for that - so it just becomes the same issue I have with my R5/R6 etc (I don’t take them anywhere except actual shoots whereas the VI comes quite literally everywhere I go). Great video once again!
Yeah my Zf comparison is a stretch haha. The Zf has kind of stole my heart cause I can still get filmic colors in camera, full frame, and the film experience. The X100 just has something about it still that’s hard to walk away from. Hence why I own both.
As an X100VI user: well said and well done video! I never asked for 40mp and it doesnt even make for very good cropping anyway. IBIS is super nice to have though, but the Rico GR III has that and it is 2024, so it is sort of expected. A faster lens would have been cool, but would make the camera bigger. How bigger? No idea. I love your idea about a medium Format X100 because that sounds fucking awesome and good! Like shit, imagine the cropping with that! So I should probably sell my x100vi, cash in and buy a cheaper x100v but I am a sucker for jpegs and I want Reala Ace & Nostalgic Negative. Overall I am happy with the camera, but man, not the best update tbh
I would argue x-h2 is a better buy than both x-t5 and x100vi. EVF quality and ability to hide away display screen are important to me, and a better grip is a bonus. But of course it is a personal preference.
Glad you put this out. Fuji needs to hear this sort of feedback. All i really wanted in the VI was IBIS. Course i also hoped for bigger battery and completely reorganized menu. Those 40 mp files are too honken’ big, and is a mixed bag.
I have to disagree on this one. The IBiS makes this a great video camera for handheld shots that the mark V couldn't achieve. In fact, it's the only reason that made me pull the trigger on this camera. I only wish the ports were on the left side but that's a minor gripe for me.
Great stuff, Cam! I do love my VI, especially since I was upgrading from the OG X100 I’ve been shooting since I bought it in 2011. While for someone like me, upgrading is a bit of a no brainer, I might have given it more thought if upgrading from the V. Also dig that Zf, and if I were not already shooting digital medium format I’d likely grab one as my main creative tool. Anyway, really enjoyed this video man!
I thought this video was concise and on point about the flaws of the camera. For someone starting out like me it’s easy to get caught up on the hype all over CZcams - in fact my x100vi order just arrived - but I’m starting to realize that I can get what I need with just an xt-3 or xt-30 or a x100v even rather the newest. I also just like editing photos on Lightroom on my phone or just exporting via a dongle sd adapter and there’s something to say about the smaller file sizes of a 26mp file. Although the HEIF makes that a little more convenient. Great video though overall - loved the perspectives of other photographers too.
Absolutely a Mark II! I felt the same way about the VI and feel Fuji just gave us some afterthought upgrades (buzz words like 40 megapixels, 10bit video etc) just trying to ride the hype of the V. 😅 The Leica Q3 is my ZF personally, which is also apples to oranges, but feel it ticks all those boxes
I love your honest view on this camera. on the side note, got an xt5 coming in. Im hoping this will be my take it everywhere camera or else gonna sell it and get the nikon. I really wanted an XE-4 but fuji decided to DC those which I personally think is the better camera than the x100.
4:14 I think it was your high shutter that did this. F2 @1/2000 or 1/4000 creates swirly Bokeh. Use the ND filter to knock exposure to 1/250th or 1/125
Hi Cam! Been loving your videos. I had a question. For some reason photos aren’t as sharp to me when they go into LR or Capture One as when they are in Fuji’s RAW app. Have you noticed this? Thanks for all the great videos
The lens can not become a 1.8 or 1.4 without getting larger. That will not work with the leaf shutter. The leaf shutter will not be fast enough if you make it larger and you need to get it larger to get a larger aperture opening. That would mean a larger lens and thus a larger camera. So no, that is not the way. If you really can not do without that small DOF then you need the X-E series or an X-pro series with interchangeable lenses. The flash is a fill flash not a main flash. At full power all flashes are slow. Just get another flash. In my opinion there is no upgrade made from the V to the VI. Full frame or better 35mm small film is also not possible without enlarging the entire camera and it makes no difference of any meaning. If you put a full frame and an APSC next to each other and you take the same picture at the exact same distance with the same lens and then crop the 35mm picture to APSC format you see the exact same DOF. DOF comes from focal length, focus distance and aperture. Sensor size has nothing to do with that. A bigger sensor will not make better IQ anymore. 1o years ago yes, now not so much. And then you will only see it if you put them side by side to compare. I do agree that 40MP and the IBIS do not upgrade the camera. It downgraded it because of stuff you do not need but still have to pay for. It becomes to expensive.
I dont mind if it gets larger personally.. I 1000% bet you fuji will do it one day and that it wont be that much larger.... it's the same thing they were saying about ibis... now look, its in every camera no matter the size. So im not buying all those excuses. And no the flash is not just a fill flash. I've used cameras from the 90s that had better recycle time at the same output. This sounds like a whole of excuses honestly. Im holding fuji accountable cause I know they have some of the best camera engineers in the world and I know they can do it. And im not an idiot. I know how DOF works. Been shooting for 15 years myself and had a successful commercial career that I left cause I love CZcams more haha. Im just trying to educate people that if they want that true 35mm film look, they need to go full frame or shoot faster lenses.
What a refreshing X100VI review. This is why I come here lol. The damn flash recycling problem is a super practical thing to bring up. I was hoping for an upgrade there. Nice work as always!
The lens is fine. It’s an X100 series. It’s a tool as you say. You can not have a faster lens on it and retain the point of the X100 series. 99% of users would be well served with the T model. If you X100 owners want faster glass, newer battery and blah blah blah… that’s why they make an X-T5.
The Nikon is too big for my use case. I have a rigged out xh2s for video. But I don't want to take it out of its rig every time I go somewhere. Also, it's just too big to hang around my shoulder all day. So I bought a second-hand XE4 with a pancake lens. (x100v/vi is just to expensive and I like to change lenses if I want)
Bro, love the honesty. Love the real-world examples. Love the channel in general. In fact, this is probably my favorite filmmaking/photography channel at the moment and I don't even know Cowboy shit 😂. Looks like I wouldn't have a problem patiently waiting for the next X100 model with an upgraded battery or maybe even grabbing a secondhand XT model with a couple nice primes for now. Megapickles are dope. I'm never mad about more megapickles. However, the practicality of a longer battery life is way more dope in my personal opinion.
I wanted a small camera for vacation. I went from "I want x100vi but cannot get it" -> "let's try x-t5 and a small lens" -> "x-t5 and manual focus voigtlander 18/2.8 does not really work for me" -> "x-h2 with voigtlander does not really work for me" -> "x-h2 + xf18/1.4"? -> "this is as perfect as it gets, but it is not much smaller than my gfx". Ended up with gfx100s+35-70 + x-h2+xf18/1.4+xf16-80. x-h2 mostly stayed in the bag :)
People have shown examples of 24mp aps-c having more detail than 40mp aps-c. I'm not trying to advertise any brands, but they are both fixed lens compacts. So it seems like detail resolution is more about the lens. 🤷♂️
@@cammackey The thing is every x100 camera has had incremental upgrades over the last generation. The problem is due to the extreme popularity of the V everyone expected too much from an upgrade. They updated pretty much everything I was expecting, though I'm still a bit annoyed that the battery was left - the newer battery isn't that much bigger..
I would prefer for x100 to make a bigger higher quality OVF/EVF and replace a built-in flash for a small external one, like Olympus does. Both are nearly useless but at least you don't have to carry external one with you everywhere. I bought a small Nissin flash for Oly and have been happy with it. And I hear lens makes unpleasant noises when focuses, like some cheap lens. Would be nice to have a fix for it.
the x100vi is my first fujifilm camera and got it on normal price so for me its defo worth it since people in my country are selling their x100v for almost the same price. I immediatly fell in love with the camera , it has a soul 🫶🏻
This camera has a real cult following but it it’s trading off some real quality points in operation and optical design just to fit the cute form factor.
The x100 has been on a slow evolutionary path since the beginning. Maybe the x100x will have the upgrades people want instead of the marketing department wish list. I’m leaning toward a Ricoh when it gets to updating its camera with some real world weather proofing.
4:21 Now, don't go talking about artifacts/watercolor effect, etc from the x-trans sensor. You'll trigger Fuji shooters. Ask me how I know :-) (this, coming from someone - me - that has owned and enjoyed several Fuji cameras over the years, going way back to the X-Pro1, X100 up to the X-H2, which is their best camera so far) And by the way, using a mask in sharpening to NOT apply sharpening to the background (because why would you want to sharpen the out of focus background anyway?) does help.
I love the XT5, I think it’s the better buy for most. I’m blessed to be able to own them all, but I will be selling my XT5 cause the Zf gets used way more now
I received a defective one from BH and will have to exchange (probably going to take another few months sadly). The EVF screen on mine is stuck 🥲. The lever does nothing besides vibrate the EVF screen with a clicking noise. Turning my camera on and off does nothing and sometimes the EVF screen only rises half way up. Tried resetting the entire camera, removing the battery for a long amount of time. Nothing. Very bummed.
I am open for both cameras :) I had the x100v and now the xh2 but I would use the zf, too. No hate :) BUT recently I did a photo shoot ONLY with jpg (HEIC) and I got a really nice (custom) look, now I am going into the Fujifilm jpg/heic-recipe rabbithole :)
For a 4 year wait after receiving my 100vi this has to be the most underwhelming "upgrade". Least they could've done is upgrade the evf and rear screen. They are beyond dated after swapping between my zf now.
I also hated to love my X100V. Man it was a beauty but that was the main reason to keep it in the end (for too long). Finally sold it and bought a Nikon ZF. Super happy so far with it! X100vi wasn't even a choice for me. Body was entirely untouched, they just kept the old parts, put more MP and IBIS in it and wanted to impress the hipsters. Better grip, better battery, better menu, better lens etc. all missed opportunities. I might buy a xe-5 or a xt-50 in the future paired with the 27mm. So far bye bye Fuji ...
The upgrades you want would make the camera bigger, at that point it would make even less sense to buy it since the Fuji interchangeable cameras are already picked as an alternative. Shallow depth of field is overrated. I actually liked your X100VI photos more than the ZF. Better context because of the visible scenery and has an unique vintage bokeh look.
Well the cool thing about the ZF is I could simply just.... close down haha. But now if you wanted that look with the X100.. cause after all it is an art form and we can make creative choices.. you cant do that with the X100. And I would be okay with a little large x100 personally.
@@cammackey As you say, it's a tool but this one can provide features the ZF can't like built-in ND & flash, leaf shutter sync speed, and hybrid viewfinder in a smaller size. #1 feature though...no LCD nose squish 🤠
I mean..no one really talks about this but they just could've came up with a new battery design for this camera, like from scratch. No need to use the battery in the X-T5 or X-H2. Maybe we'll see this in the mark III
Awesome video - about the only YT creator telling it as it truly is. Basically, Fujifilm screwed up on this one!! However, it won't matter because all the Fuji fanboys are so one-eyed, just because it has the X100 name on there they will still be parroting how good it is. Oh boy - I'm so glad I swapped over 2 years ago from ten yrs with Fuji, to Nikon Z.
I don‘t think we’ll get a faster lens in the X100 series any time soon. A 1.4 lens would just be too big for that camera and Fuji probably wants to keep the small form factor. Additionally they still wanna sell their other cameras and don’t want to overpower that thing haha
I feel they should make a second version then thats more expensive with a better lens.. I have a feeling by the end of the year the X100VI is going to have a lot of full frame competition ;)
“A second version … with a better lens” won’t be an X100 … it’ll be a different camera. And your comparison here is very apples to oranges: the Fuji equivalent of the Zf is the X-T5, not the X100. The reason there are a lot of X100 vs. Q3 videos is because they are similar beasts … and the improved image quality from the Q3 comes at the cost of size and price. Fuji has said they are trying to keep the form factor consistent through the X100 line and keep the cost roughly the same (given market/inflation variables). A last point: 40 MP for cropping and a stabilized sensor seem like decent upgrades to me, but people can quibble if they’d like. (I think of this series more like a phone … no amazing changes from one version to the next, but small upgrades over time. Difference is the older versions continue to work just fine if you prefer them.) All the requests I’ve seen from people complaining that Fuji didn’t do enough would basically make this camera something other than an X100 camera. (Although, I won’t argue much with requests to make another lens revision and fully weather seal that out of the box.) But if you want something other than an X100, then just buy a different camera.
It doesn't seem to me that you can be objective in a useless comparison. Each camera has its own strong point. And the x100VI has incredible versatility. IBS & 40M = 💥
FINALLY an honest review - total money grab by Fuji. You totally missed 1 important part: this camera is now mass produced in China. Part of what made the previous models of x100 so special/worth the price was the Japanese build. Now it's more expensive, literally got no useful upgrades, and is made in a sweat shop. I would love to see you review a Ricoh Griii/x for the same purposes, its my go-to for fun shots even when I'm working on a set with my full frame in hand.
I don't think you understand that the video was just about his experience with the cameras. I enjoyed the ranting and even keeping the correction of his jargon in the final upload. I'm sure there are plenty of other reviews out there that can give you a point by point perspective, but I wouldn't call that a negative to this video.
This is a fantastic video sparkling inspiration and making g you want to go out and create more. You tube need more creators like this that actually take photos and create than advertising camera gear. Thank you for you time and work @cammackey

Yes Cam!! Few hype bubbles going to get burst.
This is needed or improvement will never happen

And for all your image quality rambling, go put a an APSC sensor next to a GFX.. shoot both at F1.8.. you tell me the results.
Agreed. You went through the pros and cons well and it all jives with what I see with these cameras too.
What a refreshing X100VI review. This is why I come here lol. The damn flash recycling problem is a super practical thing to bring up. I was hoping for an upgrade there. Nice work as always!
Is that a wooden grip 😮.. where do I get one ?? For ZF
@iwoodstore!
Absolutely right about X100VI lens. Sold my VI and going back to V. A7Cii for when I want witchcraft-level AF & super crispy shots.
Love the Bronco.
Mega. Pickles.
@@cammackey Not really related but if it's ever in the cards I wouldn't be mad at some Capture One tutorials 👍
Dude yeah imagine a X100VI type body with the GFX sensors....
The grade / edit on the image at 4:20 … 👏🏻
The last bit, are you saying 26mp FF has more detail then 40mp APSC?
Not exactly. But noisy detail can look different from clean detail. If that makes sense.
People have shown examples of 24mp aps-c having more detail than 40mp aps-c. I'm not trying to advertise any brands, but they are both fixed lens compacts. So it seems like detail resolution is more about the lens. 🤷♂️
@cammackey Yes, I understand you completely. I would think that at base ISO, it would be quite similar.
Cam I understand what you are saying but I’m not sure if the mark 2 angle is the right one. Take the 5D for example.
This camera feels like the X100V to me still. I feel it doesn’t deserve the VI name haha. Hell, X100V R would of been sick and made more sense
I personally love the built in flash, I feel a better battery would of really helped with those recovery times
Zf is 👑 I gotta send my loaner back and most likely gonna buy it because it’s perfect for me
About the wormy bokeh, its possibly from the electronic shutter (first/second curtain)... Did you check that?
the x100vi is my first fujifilm camera and got it on normal price so for me its defo worth it since people in my country are selling their x100v for almost the same price. I immediatly fell in love with the camera , it has a soul 🫶🏻
Maybe capacitor is too small and makes it harder to recycle the flash.
Different tools for different reasons, if you prefer a rangefinder, then use the Fuji 🤷♂️
Great Video!!!
Insightful points! And visually engaging and inspiring footage.
(Unrelated: at 7:25 What shirt is that? Looking so good!)
I bought it years ago, zero memory where I got it lol
Great video, where was this shot? Would love to go to there.
My voice got left in that NAB floor damn 😂
So did any strength in my back lol
Who's Chris Brockhurst?
This camera has a real cult following but it it’s trading off some real quality points in operation and optical design just to fit the cute form factor.
This is the most accurate description I have ever read anywhere
Thank you for pointing out all the cons of the x100vi and not totally being a fanboy
Would love to hear your thoughts on the ZF vs the Fuji XT5
I have a video on that ;) posted it a couple months back
i have this camera and i love it. but i have to agree, for this much money it could've been a better upgrade
See, this is why I wish I'd purchased an XE4 when I could have. X100-ish vibe with a faster lens if you choose...
Oooo what is this Fuji recipe?
The x100 has been on a slow evolutionary path since the beginning. Maybe the x100x will have the upgrades people want instead of the marketing department wish list. I’m leaning toward a Ricoh when it gets to updating its camera with some real world weather proofing.
Wish Fuji would just do full frame. Or even the 1.3x crop like the Leica M8 was
A medium format X100? Holy shit, imagine a digital version of the Texas Leica 🤩
I've been saying for years (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) if they made a MF version of the X100 it would SLAY.
Whats the best camera body for Photos from sony out fujifilm? The xt5 is to expencif
Returned mine. Could not justify the price versus a more flexible X-T5 here in Europe so bought that one instead. Never looking back.
I love the XT5, I think it’s the better buy for most. I’m blessed to be able to own them all, but I will be selling my XT5 cause the Zf gets used way more now
@@cammackey Still debating that ZF...
Hopefully fuji fixes some of these issues with the rumored X-T50
I received a defective one from BH and will have to exchange (probably going to take another few months sadly). The EVF screen on mine is stuck 🥲. The lever does nothing besides vibrate the EVF screen with a clicking noise. Turning my camera on and off does nothing and sometimes the EVF screen only rises half way up. Tried resetting the entire camera, removing the battery for a long amount of time. Nothing. Very bummed.
"in stock"? Where?? Jokes aside, great video. I agree with your 40mp take, but I think IBIS is a huge addition for a handheld like this.
I am open for both cameras :)
I had the x100v and now the xh2 but I would use the zf, too. No hate :)
BUT recently I did a photo shoot ONLY with jpg (HEIC) and I got a really nice (custom) look, now I am going into the Fujifilm jpg/heic-recipe rabbithole :)
For a 4 year wait after receiving my 100vi this has to be the most underwhelming "upgrade". Least they could've done is upgrade the evf and rear screen. They are beyond dated after swapping between my zf now.
FACTS. I feel the same way.
Twirl issues are due to the kind of shutter u are using, not due to LR or C1. electronica vs mechanical
So another downside and limitation, got it!
Keeping that old battery in there is a crime. Fuji really phoned this one in.
I think that’s the best way to say it.. missed opportunity.
MkII, sounds reasonable
Swirly = Leaf shutter?
Truth. Gotta Love this Guy. XT-5
@@Rocky_KOspeak for yourself, right-eye.
I mean..no one really talks about this but they just could've came up with a new battery design for this camera, like from scratch. No need to use the battery in the X-T5 or X-H2. Maybe we'll see this in the mark III
X100 series is meh. Its cool but the Xpro is better. Waiting for the next iteration of that. Hopefully its worth it.
very good Review, critics on point
Loooove your work cam.
And such original reviews, cinematic, storydriven. you truly stand out in this videoworld.

How did he get the brass dials on the ZF?
they come with brass dials! I just sanded the paint off
@@cammackey Was it easy? I love the brass look and don't want to wait for it to happen over time XD
8:03 im glad to hear that @kofi is talking sloooowwweeerrrrr.. 🤣😅🤘
hahahah he was a lot more tired that day
Wtf is this slander 😂😂😂
😂
Awesome video - about the only YT creator telling it as it truly is. Basically, Fujifilm screwed up on this one!! However, it won't matter because all the Fuji fanboys are so one-eyed, just because it has the X100 name on there they will still be parroting how good it is. Oh boy - I'm so glad I swapped over 2 years ago from ten yrs with Fuji, to Nikon Z.
Thank you!!!! respect
Kofi need even take pictures with Arri Alexa to fit him
Any Leica M shooters out there that don't get the hype behind this camera (doesn't matter what generation M)?
I don‘t think we’ll get a faster lens in the X100 series any time soon. A 1.4 lens would just be too big for that camera and Fuji probably wants to keep the small form factor. Additionally they still wanna sell their other cameras and don’t want to overpower that thing haha
I feel they should make a second version then thats more expensive with a better lens.. I have a feeling by the end of the year the X100VI is going to have a lot of full frame competition ;)
@@cammackey I hope so. Competition is always a good thing :)
It does, but it could have had even more versatility.
9:20 - man, what's the size of your pockets?
FINALLY an honest review - total money grab by Fuji. You totally missed 1 important part: this camera is now mass produced in China. Part of what made the previous models of x100 so special/worth the price was the Japanese build. Now it's more expensive, literally got no useful upgrades, and is made in a sweat shop. I would love to see you review a Ricoh Griii/x for the same purposes, its my go-to for fun shots even when I'm working on a set with my full frame in hand.
Sounds like another nick-picking video. "it's just a documentary camera" and "wish we had a better lens". He seems to like it.
...it's a review lol
Leica Q3. Way better camera in every way. Expensive, yes. But it will hold its value whilst delivering miles better iq every day of the week.

This video is difficult to watch. It is chopped and edited so badly. Get to the point, FFS!
Don’t watch then and take a hike. Thanks for the comment tho ❤️ helps engagement
@@cammackey I’m giving you my honest opinion, that’s all. Sorry you can’t take a bit of criticism.
I don't think you understand that the video was just about his experience with the cameras. I enjoyed the ranting and even keeping the correction of his jargon in the final upload. I'm sure there are plenty of other reviews out there that can give you a point by point perspective, but I wouldn't call that a negative to this video.
@@MB-dq2gz You could be right. I just didn't get it at all.
This is a fantastic video sparkling inspiration and making g you want to go out and create more. You tube need more creators like this that actually take photos and create than advertising camera gear. Thank you for you time and work @cammackey
Great video, 40mp not required, faster card slot are required, flash recycling, better lens etc the thing I worry about is some people have a lens sharp until F8 and some have sharp from F8 - F11 so not sure about quality. Get mine soon anyway lol
