Epica are a Dutch band founded in 2003. This is from the 10 year Retrospect concert in 2013 where they went all out with an orchestra and choir. They even brought back players that had since left the band to do a song together. My brother gave me this DVD as a Christmas present and it still remains one of the best concert DVD's I possess. Other good songs are Design your Universe and The phantom agony. They also did crossovers with the orchestra instrumentals like the Imperial March and Presto as well.

Epica always records their albums with a choir and orchestra. For the last album Omega they went to Prague Philharmonic Orchestra for the orchestral parts. As the band is now busy with their new album they recently went to Prague again to record the orchestral parts for the upcoming album. To go on tour with a 70 piece choir and orchestra is a financial and logistic nightmare. In 2008 and 2013 Retrospect ( the show this unleashed video is taken from ) Epica performed live with choir and orchestra. In September 2 shows will be peformed and in December another 2 in Mexico.

Epica is amazing. Maybe try Within Temptation? They're another Dutch band. Try 'Paradise (What About Us?)' to start as it has Tarja as a guest vocalist. Kamelot is amazing. 'The Haunting' has Simone of Epica and features their original vocalist, Roy Khan. 'Sacrimony' has their current vocalist, Tommy Karevik, with Elize Ryd of Amaranthe and Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy.

Most classical orchestras and choirs cannot survive without "non-classic" performances. They keep going with dozens of other money generation performances.... radio & TV, commercials, video games, film work - and commercial gigs such as this. This particular Hungarian orchestra & choir were hired for this 10th Anniversary concert and had previously featured on Epica albums.

Too expensive to tour with a full orchestra and choir all the time but Epica originally did it for a show in Hungary in 2008. There is no video for that but they produced the Classical Conspiracy CD from that show. They then used the same orchestra and choir from Hungary for this show in 2013.
They have four shows planned for this year with orchestra and choir, 2 in Amsterdam in September and 2 in Mexico City in December.

I'm loving all your Nightwish reactions, and glad you've found Epica - so much wealth of music from Europe that so many Americans just don't seem to have caught on to. Another Floor/Simone collaboration you need to hear is 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa' - a 17th century setting of a 13th century poem in Latin - presented to break our hearts in the middle of a Metal gig - it will knock your socks off.
And you haven't even heard of Aurora yet, I bet - the Norwegian forest sprite who sings healing with her whole body and shows us a glimpse of a better world - nor Eivor Palsdottir, the Faeroese viking-witch spell-singer who can lead you into a world of trolls and warriors, or to the gates of Valhalla.
And there's Heilung, whose ritual music opens our souls to our distant past, and Wardruna, and, oh, so many stunningly good non-mainstream musicians and singers -
And - I'm delighted you've found The Warning - the best new rock band to emerge in 30 years, but have you found Lovebites yet? Five young Japanese women who are revitalising Heavy Metal just as The Warning have done for Rock.
    Keep going, Gorgeous - it's a never-ending glorious ride!

If you want to see how Simone developed in the last decade listen to Apocalyptica - Rise Again (live in London) or Once Upon a Nightmare by EPICA - Omega Live. She started sweet and good in the early 2000s was really really god at this concert you watched here. Since a few years she is THE best. Also look up her Solo content "Aeterna" and "in love we rust" are very recent releases. Also Floor developed in her career, but she was amazing very early. Simone was more like a trophy (because she was and is still ridiculously beautiful) singer, not really developed, live was not always good. But she did not stop developing and today every recent life show is just transcendental - no singer makes me feel the sings i fell with her.

Epica's not t from Finland, they're from The Netherlands (just like Floor)
Actually, in 1995, 2 dutch guitarists, Mark Jansen (not related to Floor, Jansen just happens to be a very common name in The Netherlands) and Sander Gommans, created a band they called After Forever. They hired other musiciand and Floor Jansen as lead singer. In 2002, Mark Jansen left the band over creative and artistic disagreements and founded a new band, Epica.
The Netherlands being a very small country, After Forever and Epica often played on the same festivals which lead to Floor and Simone to become good friends.

So glad you found Epica!!! Their name is incredibly apt, cuz they’re just EPIC-no other word for it even if it sounds cheesy to say! Retrospect is an incredible and iconic show, and very beloved by fans! But no, touring with a full orchestra would be a logistical and financial nightmare, so it’s something they reserve for very special occasions. That said, they record with an orchestra and choir for the studio albums, so what you’ll hear on the backing track at other live shows is still real voices and instruments!
It might be fun next to check out some of their more recent live stuff to see how they’ve grown over the years! Epica is 22 years old now and this show was for their 10th anniversary. They’ve got some absolutely amazing live shows on their CZcams channel-the two I’d recommend most are Omega Alive, which was an online concert they released during Covid lockdowns, and the AFAS Live show from their 2023 tour. Here’s some of my favorite songs:
The Skeleton Key - Omega Alive (ft the component of Epica you haven’t heard yet: male harsh vocals!)
Victims of Contingency - Omega Alive (maybe one of their heaviest songs?)
Cry for the Moon - Omega Alive (their very first song)
Code of Life - AFAS Live (insane vocals!!)
Rivers ft Apocalyptica - AFAS Live (the most beautiful ballad in the world?)
Beyond the Matrix - AFAS Live (a concert mainstay)
As a final fun fact, Simone was actually 3-4 months pregnant during this show :) once you know that you can tell how it affected her voice and energy a little bit she still did a phenomenal job, and it’s insane to think the concert was three hours long!

Great reaction! Ton's of Epica songs to listen to. For something heavy I recommend Essence of Silence live from Brussels. For something more typical Epica, Skelton Key, either the music video or live from the Omega Alive virtual concert. For a gorgeous ballad my favorite is Once Upon a Nightmare from Omega Alive or Tides of Time (no good live video so album version with the album cover). If you want to go for their masterpiece (their Greatest Show on Earth) then Kingdom of Heaven Part 3 from Omega Alive.
Some other European Bands to checkout. Look into Wintersun (Time live from Sonic Pump Studio). Blackbriar (Arms of the Ocean MV or The Seance MV or acoustic), Within Temptation (Ice Queen MV or Somewhere live from Black Symphony concert), Dark Sarah (Dance with the Dragon, Disney or cinematic metal). A non-european female fonted power metal band you also need to hear is Unleash the Archers. The yare Canadian and their lead singer, Brittney Slayes, is like the unholy offspring of Bruce Dickerson and Geoff Tate. Checkout Awakening from the Apex album.
Also you need to checkout Ayreon. Not a band but a project by Arjen Lucassen. They are basically Progressive rock/metal operas with full stories and roles for each of the singers. It is considered a huge honor within the european rock/metal community to be asked to sing on his albums and his rare live concerts. Checkout the Day that the World Breaks Down music video.
