To be honest, I'm pretty sure the ridiculous name has earned the ridicule, not the idea itself. "Satellite Command" sounds like a legitimate branch of the government that oversees the security of orbital assets. "Space Force" sounds an 80s action movie starring Dolf Lundgren as astronaut Rip Powers fighting men in cardboard robot suits and green glitter paint.

Remind me again of the annual budget given to NASA year in, year out no questions asked. And remind me again where the money comes from. Ask this fool Tyson... What is Gravity? Uhhhhhhhhh will be his response. OMG... Rogue Satellites, are you fucking kidding me. I build cell tower sites for a living, been doing it for 10yrs and will continue to build these sites for the foreseeable future. There is no receiving equipment at these sites in order to receive a signal from an imaginary satellite, in imaginary space. If satellites existed, I'd be out of a job. I'm calling bullshit on this guy, NASA, the US Government. Stop letting these clowns syphon the billions of your tax dollars every year to provide you with a few CGI Videos and science fiction stories of space travel. Demand they put this money to better use, that serves the needs of the American people like a free health service. No one has left earth's atmosphere ever, we are the centre of the Universe. In 1962 the American military launched hundreds, if not thousands of missiles to hit an high altitude target. The target was the firmament. They were trying to break through. They FAILED.

Classification only lasts 50 years, unless it is reclassified. A lot of what happened back than has been written about by people in the military that were there. *edit note* Frankly, they want us to know, without telling us straight up. You probably have a good idea about the truth just through shows and movies. None of the stories are directly true, but they are relay some truth hidden behind it. Take the Independence day remake, slightly real threat. Look at the "spiral in the sky over Norway" (czcams.com/video/z56YBWd77XA/video.html). Then this czcams.com/video/SmUh3yjJInY/video.html from ID2
He got some of the details wrong when it comes to putting offensive weapons in space, the reason you would put weapons in space is because it would drastically decrease the response window your opponent has. The idea that I cant drop something from a satellite orbiting around latitude 20 and hit something at latitude 80 is ridiculous, it's certainly not trivial but if I can put a satellite in orbit there's a very good chance I can work out the mechanics required to move a weapon from one point to another. With that, its possible to decrease the response window to 5-10 minutes, or less depending on the trajectory of the originating satellite or countermeasures placed on the weapon, and the trouble with shortening that window is that it forces the other side to shorten their response time to just a few minutes. Having any system run in that short of a time period requires that they drop controls that might prevent accidental launches or other mistakes, and makes it more likely that we have a something break and all of a sudden WW3 has started. THAT'S why you don't put strategic weapons in space, not because "it's hard" but because it makes everyone inherently LESS safe.
Yea I agree with you completely he gets a lot of details wrong and isn't really that open minded to contradictory opinions. He's not as smart as he thinks
@@JesusChrist-vx7jo “isn’t really that open minded to contradictory opinions.” You’re right Jesus, he is skeptical when people claim things with no evidence or facts. “Faith” and “trust” are not valid reasons for him to listen to someone’s opinion and believe them. I actually bought the book Neil mentioned in this podcast and it is a very good read! I highly recommend it, especially since Neil is such a great educator. He explains complex concepts in a way for readers to understand and he goes over the history of space-related topics.
16:15 He's describing deflagration vs detonation (which he mentions and explians later. I'm just adding to it); A detonation is an "explosion" who's shock wave is the same speed or greater than the speed of the flame front (speed of the flame front is how quick the fuel is igniting. Black powder for instance has a really slow burn rate and thus a slow flame front, though the shock wave is still faster than the flame front and so is why it's used). A deflagation though, is the opposed. The fuel doesn't burn fast enough to have a shock wave, or at least not one faster than the flame front. So basically what you get is the inside of an oven.
Chris my grand father was an army air corps soldier during WW2 and post war managed not only to stay in but when they split the branch he was able to be part of the first group to move into the Air Force. Always respected him for that.
Officially, Army Air Corps prior to 1941, Army Air Forces from 1941-1947. The Air Corps name just stuck around during WWII and used interchangeably with the Army Air Force.
His "real knowledge" boils down to Government sets a foundation but the private sector innovates and improves that foundation. His entire story about how planes came about is an example of that. Government doesn't innovate, because their goal is not innovation but discovery. Capitalists innovate. Government can discover because it can afford to lose money, but it can't afford to innovate without a return which it seldom if ever gets.
mike lyles he was saying the same thing about space x but he was wrong. government funding didn't come until successful launches and landings. I like Neil alot but he definitely knows he was wrong about space x so he's kinda doubling down lol
James Hanley your probably right... I just think Tyson was just trying to highlight symbiotic relationship between government & private industry. Perfect world Government innovates & private sector focus is profits do cost effectiveness always top priority.
I was in the Air Force for 24 years. I first heard of plans to begin a Space Force as a spin-off as early as 1992 and when working at the Pentagon in the late 1990s, we were informed then that it was 'within a decade' of coming into being. This was the next logical step and was bound to happen sooner or later.
You just made Neil’s point. The USAF was, originally, the AAF. His point is that this should become a separate and distinct branch of the military. And I used to work at Naval Space Command HQ and worked with officers from both US Space Command, AF Space Command, and US Army Space Command (known then as USARSPACE or We Be Space)so there will be impacts to all current branches of the military as they all use space to some extent.
Neil has a very solid grasp on how the advancement of space industry could happen. My personal view is that anything that moves people into space, in the long run, is desirable.
Yeah, that comment of Neil's didn't age well either. Bezos, Musk, and others did step up and "do it first" without waiting for the government to lead the way. Lol
Yes and that is one of the things that make him great. His boundless inquisitivness. Him and Tyson are great together. Of course Tyson is great anywhere.

The Space Force needs to do a number of things, in this order: 1. Monitor all global satellite traffic 2. Establish a semi permanent settlement on the moon. 3. Establish foreign body tracking systems on the moon (easier to track and detect extraterrestrial objects from an environment without an atmosphere) 4. Create a deep space launch facility on the moon (much more cost effective and safer to launch from moon than Earth) 5. Head an international Earth Defense Coalition, to take over monitoring of orbital AND extraterrestrial objects. 6. Head up Mars Exploration and Colonization program, using the moon as the launch and recovery location. 7. Create a semi permanent settlement on Mars, complete with manufacturing and launch facility. 8. Head an international coalition with the goal of terraforming and seeding Mars. 9. Head an international coalition to establish a permanent settlement on Mars. 10. Head an international coalition to create a deep-space exploration program, from Mars.
I think the Space Forceis a Garbage Idea. . . In that a priority should be figuring out how to clean up all the Space Junk out there. The movie “Gravity” should give anyone a good idea of the deleterious effects of Space Junk.
The only thing I see being a legit problem is the amount of money and resources it would take to terraform the surface of Mars in order to sustain life. It seems like it would be too much for our government to take full control of this plan. If we’re gonna terraform and colonize, it would have to be a global thing.
I was in the USAF for 26 yrs and back in the 80's we had posters in my building for "Air Force 2000" with an air craft/space ship flying above the earth. The announcements made it sound like an entirely new service, but it's 'Space Command', like many other commands within the AF. Also, I could listen to NDT, PhD all freak'n day!!! 🤯
1. It wasn't called the Army Air Force, it was called the Army Air Corps. 2. US Space Command was active from 1985 until 2002. What Neil is thinking of is Air Force Space Command, and they're already really good at space stuff. That's why the new US Space Command is going to be a USAF asset, run by an USAF general - at least at first. 3. If war breaks out with us and Russia or China, the first thing to be destroyed will be the GPS satellites to stop us from sending smart bombs and missiles, navigation of forces, etc. Don't get me wrong, I like Neil. His words aren't always 100% accurate, though.
Yes correct, BTW, WW2, 1943+, many crews B-17's saw Foo Fighters, my Dad and his crew witnessed many zoom around them in daylight runs to Germany. Now same as Tic Tac craft, Neil is ignoring proof still? USS Nimitz encounters again, USS Princeton and many more, as John Glenn said they are "Friendly Critters", oneday ET may land on Neil's yard, LOL
1) Those are semantics. He misspoke on the name, but you still knew exactly what he meant. 2A) see point one 2b) & 3) he addressed both topics the same way you did

No but seriously, we've been fighting aliens for a long time. We're actually a lot better at war and learning than most spices out there. *Stargate isn't just a show* Closest thing I could compare it to.
OMfuckingG... How many videos of NASA faking space do you people need before you finally realise its all bullshit and doesn't exist. Nevermind, keep watching the Sci-fi channels & listening to this prick playing the role of scientist. Because that's all he's doing here, playing a role. Coz he's an actor and that's what actors do.
+Ningishzidda Shar That was us in the 60's with the nuke my dude. ;D. What if I told you the aliens at Roswell were real and that even then, our technology was better than theirs, they just had some unique things that we have made great use of.
Then this czcams.com/video/SmUh3yjJInY/video.html from ID2
this is why i like Neil deGrasse Tyson he knows both science and human nature
Am I the only one who thinks that's Neil's voice is the most satisfying thing ever

Probably, but not in the majority, he's a little obnoxious lol
Carl Sagan's voice blows Tyson's out of the water
War in space... "Fight Em up there so we don't have to down here!"
Just because someone you don't like says something doesn't mean it's wrong.
More people need this mentality

Correction to Tyson... Army Air Corps. They got their independence and self establishment in 1947... and in a few days, the anniversary - Sept 18.
The Air Corps name just stuck around during WWII and used interchangeably with the Army Air Force.
neil degrasse tyson drops some real knowledge on initial government funding being the spark for the “self made private industry/companies”
I like Neil alot but he definitely knows he was wrong about space x so he's kinda doubling down lol
yeah too bad it doesn't apply to cars and many other inventions
James Hanley your probably right... I just think Tyson was just trying to highlight symbiotic relationship between government & private industry.
Perfect world Government innovates & private sector focus is profits do cost effectiveness always top priority.

I was in the Air Force for 24 years. I first heard of plans to begin a Space Force as a spin-off as early as 1992 and when working at the Pentagon in the late 1990s, we were informed then that it was 'within a decade' of coming into being. This was the next logical step and was bound to happen sooner or later.
I so love his ability to speak about important scientific issues while also totally palling around with Rogan, it’s such a pleasant mix to listen to

Neil: Sooooo
I was in the Space Command in the Air Force. I used to control GPS for 1st Space Operations Squad. There’s already a space force.
Elaborate please. I'm intrested.

Exactly, if technology advances enough for a space force its just going to lead to better technology for everyone

The Space Force needs to do a number of things, in this order:
1. Monitor all global satellite traffic
2. Establish a semi permanent settlement on the moon.
3. Establish foreign body tracking systems on the moon (easier to track and detect extraterrestrial objects from an environment without an atmosphere)
4. Create a deep space launch facility on the moon (much more cost effective and safer to launch from moon than Earth)
This is surprisingly well thought out for a CZcams comment.
I think the Space Forceis a Garbage Idea. . . In that a priority should be figuring out how to clean up all the Space Junk out there. The movie “Gravity” should give anyone a good idea of the deleterious effects of Space Junk.
Stop making sense. Space force is a government department which means making sense is not allowed
The only thing I see being a legit problem is the amount of money and resources it would take to terraform the surface of Mars in order to sustain life. It seems like it would be too much for our government to take full control of this plan. If we’re gonna terraform and colonize, it would have to be a global thing.
Those mostly aren't and shouldn't be goals run by a military organization. NASA should do those things.
I usually don't listen/watch podcasts but Neil is fascinating
I was in the USAF for 26 yrs and back in the 80's we had posters in my building for "Air Force 2000" with an air craft/space ship flying above the earth. The announcements made it sound like an entirely new service, but it's 'Space Command', like many other commands within the AF. Also, I could listen to NDT, PhD all freak'n day!!! 🤯
Lmao Joe is thinking, "I would kick the shit out of those flight attendants"
Yes correct, BTW, WW2, 1943+, many crews B-17's saw Foo Fighters,
my Dad and his crew witnessed many zoom around them in daylight runs to Germany.
