I'm still in the early phases of building the Track of the Wolf Bucks County flintlock rifle kit. In this video I'll dovetail the pinning tennons into the rifle barrel using a hacksaw and files.
Mike, a hint to preserve the cutting power of your files: always lift the the file off the work on the back-stroke. Not doing so causes the tops of the teeth to be rounded over, and will dull a brand-new file in short order. The finer the teeth, the faster it will dull.
The weather has gotten in the way of shooting videos. We had three snow storms this week. I'll try to get one in soon, but current weather conditions are sending me to the shop instead of the range.
Many years ago I did that on the first couple of rifles I made...worked ok, but I found I got better results if I measured everything carefully and used layout fluid for marking vs pencil on steel.
I did one of these back in '79. It took all winter in basement, but I don't remember cutting a chunk out of the barrel for a sight. When I saw you do this I thought , isn't he worried at all about barrel pressure etc. I can't wait to see the finished product.
I don't know if TOW's kits are any better than anyone else's. By reputation Chambers are among the best. I just really liked the shape of this particular stock.
Why did you not simply lay the tenon on the barrel and scribe the ends then cut a little further inside? Seems like extra work to measure, mark, measure, mark. I'm trying to learn all that I can as I'm taking on a gun building project this year. Videos are great, can't wait for you to complete it.

I BUILT A KIT GUN YEARS AGO, I LOVED DOING IT! BEST GUN I EVER HAD.
nice work Mike, thanks for sharing this build with us!
Very nicely done! Precise work. This can easily go bad fast if your not careful. Can't. Wait for the next video.

Looks perfect. Now I know how it's made: installation of rifle sight. Thanks.

Looks like a small mill or a drill press with an x-y table would be a big help for this sort of project.
Ok, thanks!
I saw that the tenon is 0.0595" thick (50.95 thousandths), not "zero point 595" (which would be 0.595")..... Dang, a 1/2" thick (deep) tenon! :-)

At 2:23, where did you get that nice set of hard stones in the plastic case? I've been looking for those...
Brownell's
+duelist1954 Excellent, thanks!
I know where they are made.
