Good luck for Tuesday's exam everyone. Key points:a) Write enough for Q1. You need to develop your ideas, not just transform them. To get an A*, you need to have incorporated a 'wide range of detailed ideas' from the text.b) Choose your phrases carefully for Q2. Any similes / metaphors relevant to the question MUST be chosen and analysed. Poorly chosen phrases won't be credited. c) Make sure you stick to the word count for 3b).

I can't emphasize enough about how important it is to understand the question you are answering. +Hello People Good luck with the exam! I agree that the Q1 is the trickiest. The key is not just transforming the text into a different text type in your own words, but also showing implicit understanding by developing ideas that stem from the text. Plenty of practice and scrutinising mark schemes is helpful.

My class agreed on these timings for today's exam. The key principle to remember is that the exam is testing your understanding of two texts that you won't have seen before: DO NOT RUSH INTO WRITING!
Q1: planning 0-15 (mins), writing 16-50
Q2: planning 50-55, writing 56-75
Q3a): planning 76-88, writing 88-95
Q3b): writing 96-110.
Checking: 110-120

Bal King I find question 2 and 3 rather easy, personally. Question 1 causes me to stumble. Is getting an A* really as difficult as they make it seem to be?
Not really its not that hard to get an a* in english language igcse, In question one all you have to do is write 5 points (in your own words), develop them eg emotions,
consequences, then justify them eg because

My school no longer uses this exam paper. However, I can recall a few surprising results in the past. Are you able to ask for the script to be returned so that your teachers can try to identify the issues?

I need help defining the words on Q2.
Regular dictionary work is vital over the next few months. Aim to look up 5 words a week, noting down definition, how the word is used in the context, and using it in your own sentence.

Dear Rea. Many thanks for your message. During term time, I am too busy with my own classes to work with other students. During holidays, I do some occasional private tuition, but that probably isn't much use for you. Do not underestimate the value of reading regularly to prepare for this examination: how else do you expose your mind to excellent, written English? Good luck.

please help! I was doing a lot of past papers before my final exam yesterday, and I was doing quite well in most of them. (I'm doing the 0500 exam) However, when I sat the exam yesterday, I found the material so much harder than the previous past papers, and I feel that I completely screwed everything up, panicked completely in the exam, and when I was looking back at my answers, I was so unsatisfied at how they turned out, and noticed a lot of errors and mistakes I made. Do you have any advice getting over this feeling of despair? I'm trying to concentrate on the Directed Writing exam which is in a couple days, but I just keep thinking about this exam and how badly I did in it. I was hoping for an A*, but I'm not even sure whether I can get a B in this exam.... thank you if you've read this!
Many thanks for your email. It's so important to move on after examinations. I have heard that a lot of people found this examination difficult, which may mean that they lower the grade boundaries. Remember also that Directed Writing contains far more marks for the accuracy, and sophistication of your own writing, rather than understanding of texts / technique. How was the exam today?
SchofieldShakespeare Basically, the exam was horrible. Passage A was not set in chronilogical order, only a handful of paragraphs were needed, bullet point 1 and 2 were almost the same and the Passage itself was very confusing. the summary question was also quite difficult. It asked for for and against arguments for keeping parrots as pets but only arguments for keeping them were in the Passage so I had to make a guess as to what the against arguments were. Don't even get me started on question 2. The paragraph for 2b had 3 lines and no imagery what so ever. I had done numerous past papers but none of them even came close to that exam. A complete joke to be honest. was hoping for an A* but probably going to change to a B at the very most.
Dear Will, I'm so sorry it was so frustrating. My own school has changed to the 0627 syllabus following some concerns. I haven't missed teaching it, I must confess!

@@ziwangyang3988 ooh I thought you would be taking paper 3 as well. You have a directed writing (similar to the first question in paper 2) and a choice between narrative or descriptive writing. in my school we have to take both papers. they are both out of 50 so the total makes a 100.
