The Kershaw Blur has quickly become one of my favorite medium-large knives for every day carry. I was very impressed with it's edge holding capability as I put it through my battery of simple cutting tests. It has great aesthetics and good ergonomics and a wide variety of versions available for any taste or preference.
The Ken Onion designed Blur definitely hits a sweet spot for me, and I expect it will be in regular use for a while.

My Dad was gifted one of these years ago, and used it a few times only. He had a stroke and lost hand dexterity to a point he stopped using it. I want to get my own, now, to remind me a bit of my Dad. Even though I don't like thick or heavy knives, unless fixed bladed ones, but this knife is an exception.
I have EDC my blur tanto for over 6 years. I still love it and plan on carrying it for many more. best folding knife I have ever bought.
I love this knife! I've been using a Blur at work for almost a year now,it has been fantastic.
The Blur is one of my favorite knives.
They did in limited numbers. If they can be found, they are getting insane prices for them. I wish they would do another blue one also. They look great.
CPM 154 is an absolutely amazing steel! From what I've seen and heard, it seems to hold an edge very well, on par with and sometimes better than s30v, and gets extremely sharp with relative ease
This would be the perfect knife with a flipper option like the ZT 0350..
I have the S30V version and it's awesome.
I carry the knife in my back pocket, tip down, for the exact reason you said. Works well with jeans, works even better with tactical pants like the 5.11 taclite because the rear pocket come all the way to your hip bone.
If I carried the knife in my front pocket I might carry tip up; you just have to reach all the way into your pocket when you grab the knife, in order to not have to rearrange your grip on the knife.
Great review of a great knife. I have 6 of them, and am always looking for new versions to get. Great to EDC. The one gentleman mentioned the liner lock failing on him. Can't imagine that happening if properly used. But who am I to say. I am sure I am wrong there. Keep the great reviews coming. Two thumbs up.
The Blur is a great knife series. I own the purple one with the stonewashed tanto blade made out of BDZ1 steel. It's my new favorite EDC.
love classic knife reviews! not too many people do em as much!
I love my Kershaw Blackout (1550st), haven't been tempted to replace it since I got it in Dec 04. Broke a scale using it as a hammer in 09 and Kershaw sent me another set for free.
I have been wanting to get a blur for a long time, someday. I'm glad I'm not the only one that prefers tip down on most knives. Nice vid as usual.
Bought the blackwash tanto version from walmart. I love it!
Kershaw Blur in Tanto was one of my first Knifes now my brother Carries it.
My first knife is the rat 1 which I've been very happy with. I just ordered the kershaw Ken Onion blur in all black as my next step up. For me, tip up is more natural as I draw the knife from my pocket. Guns and knives are so addicting!
srg914 I really don't notice a difference I take a knife out wether it's tip up or down and it feels fine in my hand. I leave the clip where ever the factory sets it and I never feel werid. and yes very addicting habit bought one to....and some other knives this week and last month...
Very nice review. Got my blur a few years ago and still love it.
I love the blur as a knife, it has good ergonomics, spring assist and blade shape, among other things. The issue I have with mine is that I have never used it at all, yet the lock fails if I hit the spine of the blade against me palm.
I'd like to see a mini Blur. One with less than a 3inch blade. That way I could legally carry it anywhere, even to school (collage). I currently carry the Spyderco Delica 4, and like it. But I love the way the Blur looks, and love the fast opening and closing.
My Blur did not handle medium duty wood carving (bamboo).
Took a good part of the blade out. Kershaw will replace the blades on standard versions for $10. Mine is tigerstriped and they don't replace limited editions. That was 14C28N in case you're wondering.
Loved that knife, until it broke.
Wow, never knew all that about the blur, going to be getting a plain sandvik black one for $35 thanks to this review, always enjoy your videos thanks
I would say the Blur Rescue model. Or Victorinox makes some for first responders that are excellent. I carry one with me always in the car as it has a seat belt cutter with one hand opening.
I just picked up the Blur in S30V steel for $62 on Amazon. They have a promotion on right now for Kershaw knives; Spend more than $50 on Kershaw knives and you get $10 off of the order. Bought some more Kershaws for my dad as a Father's day gift.
My Blur was the sharpest factory knife out of the box that I have. Others were plenty sharp, but the Blur was like a razor from the factory.
The thing to consider about Right Hand Tip Down carry... is if... like me you carry your Keys on the right side too... then that Black Blade ain't gona be Black fer very long !!!
Been there done that !!!
Tip down carry all the way. Tip Up doesn't make sense for me.
Great review! I'm not a knife enthusiast, but the timing on this video was perfect for me. I was about to start looking for a good quality, American made lock back knife for EDC. Research done with one video. Ordering the Blur from Blade HQ today.
Great review BoyScout, I think I'm going to pick up the s30v model. You didn't mention the difference in grind on the blades with better steel. I really like the smooth transition at the back of the blade, its a deal maker for me.
***** ......bro I've been lookin for that knife forever. Its my dream knife in that color configuration. I'll trade u a desert tan Hammond desert crusier and $20 boot for it!!
I just ordered mine today. Got it for 34 on Amazon. I'm so excited. I got the Cryo G10 a few weeks ago but I'm not too fond of it. I'm not a huge fan of the flipper and I'm definitely not happy it was made in China. Anyway, can't wait to get this knife.
+SaiK Grigo Why would you even buy a Cryo if you're not a fan of flippers or oversea made knives??? Just curious
Anyways Im like you, just snagged me a Blur from todays deal too (I got the S30V one)
+xSkye629x Well, the Cryo was my first flipper (I'm pretty new to knives) and I just decided I don't really like them. I prefer my Rat 2 over my Cryo. Too bad I lost my Rat 2...
+SaiK Grigo Fell in love my kershaw leek, but lost it. Got a blur to replace it, black scales and frame, satin blade, and utterly impressed. I was skeptical if I would like not having a flipper, but damn, the blade feels spring loaded, i thought it would be illegal until i inspected how it worked. A month later and I can still shave with it, holds an edge much better than my leek did, but the blur has s30v steel, the leek was 14c28n i believe. Not saying the leek didn't hold an edge, just not as well as s30v. I hear s30v is a bitch to sharpen, that'll be fun when it comes time, thankfully it doesn't look like i'll have to do it often.
I was just looking at the Blur with s30v about a week ago, it's on amazon for $69. Thanks for the review.
Almost chopped my right trigger finger off using this knife once, went down to the bone fast. With that said, I have lost 2 of these and will continue to replace them with themselves. I enjoy the new colors and better steel use, I am between a red or desert one right now...
Thank you from talking about tip down carry like that. Some people judge and hate on people for carrying tip down and its rediculous. Lol
Excellent review. Seems like you missed review of clip - I think the clip is terrible. I replaced it with aftermarket clip for deep pocket carry and am very pleased. Didn't know about rescue Blur - awesome!
Forgot to tell you good review I enjoy your vids keep em coming
I'll take the paramilitary, seems to have less movable wearable parts such as springs and whatnot. The simpler the design the more reliable plus I am partial to the FFG.
the blur was THE first, what i will call, quality knife i got, and i got it merely because i saw it at a bass pro shop and had to have it. i mean, that was 5-6 years ago so of course i'm in tune with what i like and what i trust, etc. slightly amused because my favorite EDC blade lengths 4" because i'm just one of those people. haha okay now to finish the vid.
I love this knife to death. I have a serrated, blackwashed tanto version with Sandvic 13c26 blade. I haven't seen any others like it, and I like mine quite a bit. Though to be fair, although I haven't checked, it's probably still being sold at Walmart. I've had it for about half a year, and although it isn't hair-shaving sharp, or paper-cutting sharp, it held it's edge well and it works for me.
+Deathguy56 Yes they are in a few stores. I just bought the one you just described. It was $59.99
Nice, it's a great knife
Is there a reason why knife companies don't make all knives with Flipper Tabs so you can open them Flipper method? Then add thumb studs, thumb disc, thumb hole. Flipper opening seems so much easier to get the blade open.
The only reason I can think of is weight and ergonomics.
Watch out for the cheaper steel versions. Other than that the blackout and blur and great knives
I too love my Blur (S30V). I needed to fine tune the liner lock to lock up harder for more confidence. Something I think Kershaw should address.
The thing about tip down is better - SO TRUE.
With that recurve , it looks like it would be a nice light hunting knife. Has anyone used it for that purpose?
i found out that they do make new versions.. :( I had a green one w/ the tanto blade.. it was an amazing knife. I gave it to my brother who helped me w/ some auto mechanic work. I bought a new one, all black. I keep trying but my brother wont trade me back lol he loves my old knife so much. I hate the black blade.. but oh well it works amazing still.
I find tip-up to be far faster than tip-down. If a knife doesn't let me carry it tip-up, it will not stay in my EDC rotation.
How does this compare to the Kershaw Clash? The Clash has been one of my favorites as of late. I also prefer a flipper. I would go so far as to say I require an EDC to be a flipper now.
I love how the beater blur is a blem.
how is the blur handle ?i think will get this but i have questions.Handle is good ?i mean its handle feel is good ?Thank u.
I guess I'm just too much a neophyte in carrying a knife with a pocket clip but I just don't get why one would carry tip up for the exact reasons your friends describe.
Great review my friend!
Great review, enjoyed it very much, thank you.
Use this as my work knife since I camt carry my benchmade auto
And with a sheath
I have several and never had a problem. My thoughts are, if you use this knife properly, like you should with all knives, it will not fail you. But people get use to locks and then get sloppy, not using common sense, and do things with knives that never should be done, with a lock or not. Proper knife usage. It has a strong lock. If it breaks, the user failed, not the lock. They failed to use a knife properly. Just my $.02. Let the flaming begin. LOL
Nice job on the review!
Like it, dont love it. once you get used to the leaf shape of spyderco, or the straight edge on the leek, and their ease of sharpening i find myself not carrying this knife as much. much like the smaller brothers the chive and scallion the belly of the blade is big and gives great cutting ability, its just a pain to get that perfect edge back on there, especially if your trying to use whetstones. If your using a system like the Sharpmaker though, it works great!
Great knife. Rips the hell out of my pants though. Not sure if its the grip tape or the studs. Or both.
The blur needs to be a a stainless steel framelock! The linerlock has failed on me alot, not suggested for tactical use
Weird, every time I look at a specific knife for the day, you seem to upload that very knife.
I have over 40 different versions and a bunch more im missing
LOL no some of my friends on bladeforums have me beat by quite a few
I've been thinking about getting one, but it has the same pocket clip as the Leek and IDK if I want that because I've never really liked it. I do have a few Kershaw knives with better clips and wish they would use them more!
The cryo II blows it away.
I don't know if you have noticed that the lock on the blur isn't very sturdy. Mine would come unlocked at the slightest tap on the back of the blade and it cut me. Plus the blade gets loose over time and the bolts loosen up too.
He cut himself with the blur in a situation like what you described. He has a video about it somewhere, I'm surprised he didn't link it.
again user error let me guess you were trying to baton wood with it right? next time try an axe.
I think it all depends on how you pull your knife out of your pocket.
The drawback of these types of knives is that small change gets caught in them then falls on the ground when you pull it out.
I love the blur, just wish they made it with a reversible pocket clip for us lefties.
I wonder if the people who have had failures with this knife possibly bought from amazon or eBay and got a Chinese built version. I've heard discussion of how the Chinese made have weaker liners and torsion bars.
Yeah, I was wondering that too. On amazon there a quite a few bad reviews, but on their website, there is nothing but positive reviews. I'm not a knife aficionado, and was wondering about blade hq. Do they sell legit knives? They are waayy cheaper than buying straight from kershaw's website.
Should I get one of these or a cry?
My blur broke when I tried to wash it out with water. The lockup was so sticky I could barely close the knife :(
I want to buy my first Kershaw and high end knife. What are some more of your favorites from Kershaw. I'm looking for a tactical EDC much like the blur. Thanks! Great video.
Get one of each.
Really good knife feels strong but the tip is weak and know some people that have broke the tip
Hey I have a quick question since I'm pretty torn between the two. Which knife should I go with, the Kershaw Blur in s30v or the Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight in s35 vn? Thank you so much.
I really wanted to like this knife, but just couldn’t get passed how sharp the thumb studs were. Is there a way to replace them?
Ps: I understand I’m probably just being a man baby.
can you get this knife without the spring assist?
Any blade play after the wood?
Is this knife made in the USA
what shotgun are those prints in the back ground for
Hard to see why anyone RH would carry tip down.
just got the s30v blur for 60 $
My dad found one in the street while we were at work; i traded him one of my knives for it
can you review the spyderco tasman?
Yeah I’ve never understood the tip up hype. Makes no sense
Who would like 14C28N over CPM154? Lol I think CPM154 is much better lol
Late Boy Scout, I am a first responder and I am looking for a knife with a seatbelt cutter and a window breaker fixed or folding but probably folding what do u recommend
Benchmade triage
Can say that this is a nice EDC knife. I have owned two. That being said.. I believe 1 to have been lost and the other stolen. I believe it was lost to falling off of my pants pocket. These were for rescue/EDC for fire fighter.
Anyone else have any recommendations
What would you suggest as a good sharpener?
Spyderco Sharp-maker
Tip up means It can easily open on its own. And when you go to grab it. The blade could open and stab your hand
Not really thats how I carry and never had an issue
It's from Jan, 06
Does kershaw make this knife with blue grips?.
Yes I have one
cutting those hairs off your arm was cool right up until you put it all up in the cam lol. thanks for the video
is there even 40 versions? jw
Wats the best assisted knife under $100???
Try some sog products
I already got the bench made mini grip amazing knife and can use lefty
TameClamDemarco sweet!! I have the full size grip 551 in od Green. It's amazing!!
Dont get assisted. The strongest best knife to me is a recon 1 from cold steel. Cant beat the lock up on it
Tip up only makes sense to me if the knife has an Emerson Wave
+Chris Poy I find it depends on where the picket clip is positioned and what your dominate hand is. If a knife allows I carry them tip up with the blade facing behind me. When I stick my thumb down into my pocket and pull it out, my thumb is right on the stud and I don't need to re-position. It is of course all personal preference and do what ever works for you.
10,000th view! What do I win? Oh wait, never mind! I still haven't claimed that rock you gave me a while back. ;-)
U can tell a lot about a man who carries a knife tip down...
Razor :)
But then again when you lose your 100$ knife you will probably face palm youe-self.
See when you carry tip down most of the knife weight is at the top of your pocket which increases the chance the knife will fall out (reverse pendulum effect). So in general tip down is a bad idea (especially in back pocket!!!).
May we never have to lose a knife again!
Cheers.
