I know most people see the Steampunk aesthetic as a Victorian/British style, but I've always been fascinated by the concept of a more "western/cowboy" Steampunk, with dusty cities filled with rough-and-tumble cyborgs and clinking of gears replacing the clopping of hooves. It's a neat concept to me. While I love the usual Steampunk genre, the more unusual genre of steampunk has always been awesome! Imagine this:
There's a small shop with stained glass on the corner, and a mechanic with his robot partner helping him fix another man's arm. They're bantering as a cat is lazing on the tool shelf, under the gears that move the steam-powered forge. In the saloon, a robot with multiple arms mixes drinks for his rowdy customers while a woman, smoking her cigarette, walks up to the wanted board to take a bounty, armed with her pistol on her waist and her shotgun on her back. Outside, rolling into town on rusty, steam hover-cycles, are a group of mysterious strangers on the hunt for a bit of mischief and money, with goggle-topped hats and gear-adorned boots that make clinking sounds as they walk, almost like spurs. There's an automated well and fountain in the center of town- a grand display of gears shifting and parts whirring to bring up water from an underground spring. Small plants dot the houses, hanging off balconies or sitting on windowsills- a small bit of life in the mechanical town. It's rough-and-tumble, with daily brawls and shifty characters, but it's home.

I don't think steampunk has to be restricted to a certain part of the world. Imagine you've loved Steampunk your whole life, a world and dreams wrapped up in your head, but your creativity was stifled by everyday life, never allowing it to grow. You cross the road up to Victoria Station, wondering how you ended up like this. You didn't realise a train was coming at full speed. You jump to avoid it, but the shock makes you faint. You wake up being nursed by a strangly dressed fellow, not knowing where you are and wanting to leave as much as possible. You run away when your mobile doesn't work, thinking your benefactor has ill intentions. His modest apartment, full of models and trinkets, is right in front of the Big Ben, and you see your world coming to life at that moment. You see your kind saviour is none other than the sidekick you created for your protagonist. Looking at your clothes, you realise you're none other than the hero of your Steampunk world, now with your features instead. You've been transported back to the time between two world wars, except the Titanic didn't sink, steam had overtaken our tech by the world embracing Tesla's innovations over Edisons', and Adolf Hitler is a now a bitter cripple from the great war manically lost in his paintings, with only you knowing how much that bullet stuck in his leg saved many lives before they were ever lost.
Question is, do you want to leave? And how can you return to our world?

April 9th, Year of Our Lord 1912 ; Penelope Shackleton, a British-American debutante.
You'd hardly believe it even if I hired a photographer, Harry. It's an enormous ship. I've been told five hundred feet longer than the Californian, and the paint still pungent in the glossy finish of aerolyer's resin. Of course, what would I know of it, but then again it was my glider that won the Illinois Mechanical Aeronautics Fair wasn't it? I told you to change your 12-5 configuration but bless you! Seven hundred feet and into the Lake! Regardless...if only you were here to see the lift-off. The boom of the seven quadratic-cylinderics rumbled through the entire city of Southampton, and the whine of steam jetted from the funnels as its great propellers took speed, and we launched. Can you believe it? Seven! They've never designed an airliner with that capacity. Captain White says we could make New York in just under five days at full speed. And more thereof too! I've written this brief letter thanks to the courtesy of its hanger wing, Blue Star Line's latest. Three specially designed kites each piloted by two aeronauts that can sail ahead of the airliner with the mail, or back across should we ever need it. Lord, I should hope not, our cruising attitude is 1200 feet today and blisteringly cold too.
And just before Kite Ranger leaves, I've written this letter in the hopes that you get your belongings together and sort out your affairs in Chicago quickly. Titanic is scheduled to dock in at High Sears - Station Square just for the afternoon April 16th. We'll be flying in style to Melbourne. Though of course, darling, I would be the only one between us who could say 'I sailed the entire maiden voyage of RMS Titanic - Southampton, England to Melbourne, Australia via the United States.
      Yours,
      Penny.

We can't risk to have a Women written as bad as Captain Marvel and contaminating the whole movie. Oh boy, your idea could really become something awesome. I can imagine the genius behind the main character and the sarcastic way he acts (like Rick but a bit nicer) and there should be a really depressed scene in the movie, that fits always. a little short story inspired by the steampunk aesthetic!
The hum of mechanical wheels whizzed just beneath the heels of my boots. I listened intently to the clipping of my shoes against the wooden floor with each step, humming an old nursery rhyme to block out the sound of the cogs beneath the floor. I refilled each container resting against the humble coffee shop’s counter, beginning with cocoa beans and ending with refined sugar.
My name is Lucille. That is what Mama told me. She said that my name is Lucille and has always been Lucille and to tell no one anything other than that. And so I listened like I have been doing my whole life. I’m an obedient young lady, that’s what she tells me every night.
I’ve gotten used to the sounds of the gears because I hear them even on the upper floor of the coffeehouse where Mama and I are staying. She said that they’re run by a flow of water that keeps the entire street lit up, including the quaint café-slash-house with green patterned walls, but I thought that she was lying. In fact, I was so sure that one evening I walked all the way from the coffee shop to the river just outside of town square and counted in my head how long it took for the current to carry a single leaf from one end to the other. It’s a small little stream, but it took over twenty minutes, which means there’s no way that water could move the cogs underneath the shop as quickly as Mama says it does.
    “Lucille!” a weathered voice called.
I perked up quickly, knocking over the freshly filled cup of sugar. The sparse powder spilled across the mahogany counters.
“Lucille!” the same voice repeated, now with annoyance rather than exhausted glee.
I pouted silently, looking up at Mama as she hastily untied a messy bundle of brunette hair held together by a collection of pins. I gave her a look that loosely communicated my reparations, rushing to scoop the sugar back into its container. I neatly placed the jar next to its predecessor- labeled Pecans-and stood up with less turbulence than before.
I turned off the first floor lights and folded up the rug because tomorrow was Sunday which meant it was laundry day and swept up the messes left earlier by customers and made sure that the door was locked because when Mama came home with her hair all bundled up in pins it meant that she had a long day and I needed to do her chores. And after I stuffed the welcome mat into the closet next to the rug littered with boot prints I walked upstairs and climbed into bed next to Mama because it was autumn and I was cold.
“Thank you, Lucille,” Mama whispered, brushing a strand of my auburn hair behind my ear. “You’re a very obedient young lady.”
I nodded in response. She rolled over to her side as she did every night and the floor creaked beneath the two of us.
“Mama, how long will we be here? I don’t like the sounds of the wheels below us even if they do power the electricity and I miss the old life we used to have because I had a group of friends that had pretty dresses. I got to borrow their dresses, Mama, and now I have to wear this coffee shop apron.”
She sighed, although I couldn’t tell if it were because she didn’t know what to say or that she didn’t want to say it.
    “Goodnight, Mama,” I said quietly.
I opened my eyes to the sound of chatter downstairs. I crept down the steps making sure that no customer would hear me and peeked out from the corner of the stairwell. I noticed a group of older adults gossiping near the bar and Mama rushing to make the coffee.
She was terrible at making any sort of drink, which is why I was so confused when she said we would be living in a shop dedicated to them. Once she had made enough money as Robin- that was her old name -she used it to buy this location with a lengthy first floor and just enough room to fit a bed and closet in the attic.
My old name, which I’m not supposed to tell anybody, was Amber. And before that, Vivienne, which I enjoyed more so than my time as Amber because I was given a datascope powered by aether that I had to give up because it could leave a trail showing the bad men where Mama and I were. I’ve lost count of all the names Mama and I have had because they change so frequently and frankly I don’t care for many of them.
Mama always tries to paint our new lives as some new adventure when in reality once I’ve explored the nuances of our new homes like the very slow creek near the town square or the house of the girls with pretty dresses I realize how lonely I am.
I’m lonely because even the girls with dresses or the nice old man who gave me that datascope are all going to forget me when I become someone new. Their life is a century-long story, mine a sporadic one that changes course every full moon. I’m often sad because everything is temporary, even the blissful happiness I felt when I watched the leaf sail down the murky river.
I know this well, I recount, because even as I now watched the adults clamor over whether Marrie should be with the materialistic journeyman or the honest neophyte, I knew that they would always have something I could not. A name, one that was truly theirs.
I am Lucille, the curious young daughter of a coffee shop owner, but I am also Amber, a prodigal daughter envious of high-end fashion. I live in the cramped attic nestled within a crowded city lined by cobblestone streets, yet I live, too, in a faraway port town shielding the inland from horrendous storm surges every summer.
“Lucille, my dear, do not let the customers see you in your nighttime clothing. Please, go upstairs and change.”
Mama’s voice separated me from my thoughts.
    “Yes, Mama,” I whispered.
I returned to the main floor in a pure lilac dress that Mama had sewn herself, accompanied by the incessant whirring of the wheels. I spent the rest of the day cleaning up dishes left by the customers because I was not yet trusted to make any sort of beverage and the evening thereafter watching the shop.
Mama had left at sunset like she did the night before, and every night before that, and instructed me before her departure to stay still and not touch any of the special ingredients. She didn’t want me to spill anything as I had with the sugar last night but I found it incredibly boring to simply stand around in an empty coffee shop without touching anything and so I spent the next couple of hours drawing out different structures around the room.
“Young lady!” Mama wailed in terror moments after I had completed a walnut and cream replica of the first floor’s foggy glass windows.
“I had nothing to do!” I exclaimed in my defense, quickly closing the ingredient containers and readjusting them to their previous positions.
“You have disappointed me gravely, Lucille.”
My eyes darted to the spilled cream dotting the counters with shame.
“You may sleep as a reward for cleaning this room until it is spotless, understood?”
    “Yes, Mama.”
I spent the next hour dirtying our clean linens with old, half-dried cream and melted sugar. And then I turned off the lights and swept the floor and locked the door because I assumed that Mama was not in the mood to be doing her chores. Then, I walked up the stairs as quietly as possible and slipped underneath the covers that itched more than my homemade nightgowns.
It must’ve been another hour before I could fall asleep because the wheels beneath the floor were especially loud whenever I was upset.
I woke up early the next day and crept down the stairs as I had before, peeking out from behind the wall. There was only one customer in the shop, an elderly man speaking to Mama in what seemed to be a very adult conversation that I figured I ought to not be listening in on.
“I know this is short notice… really? Oh my, how may I thank you, Miss?”
Mama shook her head with a warm smile. “Don’t worry about it, Mr. Edenson.”
He held out his hand, which Mama shook politely.
The old man then left through the front door and I stood confused for a few minutes because at this time the store was usually full of customers, but Mama was standing around as if she had nothing but time and she never stood around like that.
“Lucille?” Mama called, to which I rushed upstairs and positioned myself in bed because I knew she would be terribly upset if she realized I had been listening in on her conversation. I faked a yawn and glanced over with one eye closed.
    “Morning, Mama.”
She smiled down at me, kneeling over to place one hand on my shoulder.
“I’m afraid that we won’t be able to stay in this city anymore.”
    I frowned.
“But it’s alright because we’ll be able to move out to the countryside and live on our own ranch. Doesn’t that sound astonishing?”
I masked my disappointment with a soft smile.
“Your name is Esther. Isn’t that a beautiful name? You can tell no one anything other than that your name is Esther and that it has always been Esther, understand?”
    “Understood, Mama.”

An alternate world of imagination which may never come to reality.
And that's why we need more steampunk games, movies, and novels to keep the imagination going hoping for the future.
