It sounds like your home made itself a self fulfilling prophecy. You all encouraged each other about this superstitious nonesense and that raised this feeling. We all can get scared in a creaky house or strange surroundings. I also think that encouraging kids to believe in these things is not a good idea because they are obviously going to start thinking they see these things for real, kids are very impressionable.

The same thing happened with Tarot cards. Widely used across Europe as playing cards (as they always were) in the English speaking world they became associated with occultism. I was taught to play Tarot by a French guy, and he was baffled by the idea that they might be used for fortune telling.

I think the popularity of it in the US is more to do with the extremely religious nature of the country compared to other Western countries. If you don’t believe in spirits the game becomes just an interesting experiment in subconscious mental suggestion.

Re: the existence or not of a spirit realm. I didn't believe it but when my sister was terminally ill ( she was in another country) one morning I woke with an overwhelming grief which I couldn't shake. I later felt a sudden presence next to me (right up close) which had hold of my arm. Then a strong sense of joy and freedom emanated from this presence. I turned to look at it and saw a burnished orb. The presence disappeared but I made a note of the time because I was sure that was the spirit of my sister. When my niece rang later, I knew it was sad news and , yes, my sister had died at around the same time ( slightly before) I felt that presence. Time difference was taken into account. I've since read that other people half way across the world have sensed a loved one's death and also encountered a feeling of joy at the same time.
I now believe there's something other than this physical existence but have no time for those who exploit people's grief such as mediums.

@@laserpanda94 he never said it was proof of ghosts. If you'd like to provide some scientific data that disprove ghosts though, the floor is yours. Until then, the empirical evidence, as you state, is pretty much all we can rely on... and empirical evidence across thousands of years of documented history over every culture point to people having experiences with what we would currently refer to as supernatural forces. Just because we don't understand it yet doesn't mean it's not real. The version of science you are trying to promote here is one that discredits any experience you don't agree with.
