Sarah's been using an iPhone 12 for a while now, and with the recent release of Apple's iPhone 15, this may be the time to upgrade. With USB-C, a new matte design, and a dynamic island, is this enough to convince her to put her old phone to rest?

The Steve Jobs costume was a nice touch for unboxing an apple product
I didn’t even notice until she used her sweater to clean the camera
It's pretty obvious from the thumbnail
i farted
I feel like anyone doing an accurate Steve Jobs cosplay should go on an hour long unhinged rant about how tacky the name Pro Max is.
Mhmm it sure is nice
videos with Sarah are always fun. We don't see her often enough reviewing/testing things.
yeah she's very bubbly and energetic. some of the others, while good presenters, just arent as fun
Yeah but her reviews (or this one specifically, because the pantone one doesn't apply here) are very normie-esc. She said the speakers sound alot better than on her 12, but a 1:1 comparison would have been nice.
@@Daniel-dj7fhI actually thought that was the point of the video to match the target audience of the phone. I was pretty surprised when they showed benchmarks.
i love her personalititties
Completely different vibe. I like it.
I like how even though Sarah appreciates the new upgrades, she’s not going out of her way to upgrade for the sake of it. Mother Nature might actually approve of that
as does mother wallet.

i'd agree. and with iFixit's mantra, reusing is even better than recycling
We need more Sarah on LTT. I know shes a lead graphic artist but still shes my fave presenter. Give this a like if you want to see more of Sarah. Maybe we can get Linus to notice.
agreed, shes really fun and energetic. another job i think she'd be good at is teaching younger kids. she's so bubbly that i dont think she'd have a problem engaging the kiddos
Agreed, we need more Sarah!
@@TaylorStClare It's just nice to hear someone who actually sounds cheerful & happy. Compared with the 'usual' sad, tired & defeated sounding group of guys... She really just needs a bit more experience, and should maybe avoid ALWAYS laughing at her own jokes. It's a cute sort of 'nervous tick', but could get irritating after a while. And she could also possibly benefit from lesson from Riley about how to sound like you actually understand &/or care about the more technical information.
Wonder how many weird remarks she gets at the job. 🤣
First, you need to teach her to not sound like she's reading off the script the entire time.
Love how every video Sarah does she has even more fun than the last time
Always fun to see Sarah on video and check out a product! Her energy is contagious, I love it!
Fun fact : I used to work at a wireless retailer. Apple had mandatory virtual training to ensure you used the right "language" to describe how to use their phones and sell them. They would send secrete shoppers to ensure you did after training. If you didn't, they would penalize the store by pulling their products or threaten to do so.
Thats fucking hardcore
yikes
That's 'effin stupid.
Those dumb phones sell without you having to use any Apple jargon.
Considering the iPhone 12 is a fraction of the price that the 15 is right now, and the features aren't that much different, I'm sticking with the former. But if I had the means this 15 is pretty cool. Thank you for the video Sarah.
You can't get the iPhone 12 new, also that phone was trash from the beginning
same here, no need to replace something that still works great - a better charging cable is hardly a reason to upgrade.
@@brandonchutt312You can buy them new and they’ve gotten good reviews?
Agreed. My 12 still works great performance wise. The battery is down to 84% health but it’s not bad considering the phone is nearly 3 years old (bought it at launch). A battery replacement would keep it fresh for a couple more years at least.
Team 12 ftw
I just love to see Sarah in a Video again. More Sarah content please!
I read that as "Sarah in a video game" lol
I wasn't going to watch since I'm an android diehard but I saw Sarah was hosting and figured it should be entertaining as she brings good energy and always seems to be on the verge of bursting out loud in laughter.
I agree
Never let obvious fan girls review anything
@@stefan514iJustine does objective and very critical Apple reviews.
The iPhone 15 - due to the USB C - is the first iPhone in a very very long time that I'd even consider.
It's only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max that has faster usb than previous generation. So buy the right one if you need that usb speed
ouch I feel sorry for you, leaving great products in the story over nitpicking over a reversible connector.
@@RandomUser2401as if there's not hundreds of great products with usb-c...
being forced to have an extra connector just for one gadget is a completely valid reason for not wanting that product. there's a reason standardized connectors exist
@@RandomUser2401Lightning also works both ways, but thats not the big thing about USB C, the main thing is that one cable can do everything, for all devices...
Really? Just because USB-C? It's not like it's blazing fast charging and let's be honest, on a regular phone, no one transfers anything via cable.
Thanks to European’s for the USB-C, if it wasn’t for them it was to be still the lighting cable 😅
Which is perfectly fine for the vast majority of users.
@@neemanoneven apple knows, that USB-c is the better connector xD. And - for me - it was always a huge downside and a reason I did not even consider an iPhone. And I got an iPad with the silly lightning. And I always hate it.
@@gregor2436 there's always the fringe cases that think they need a different connector. For most people it just needs to charge the phone which the lightning did just that.
@@neemanonbeing able to charge other phones and AirPods is helpful to the layperson though
@@neemanon for me it is a question of convenience: with USB-c I only need one charger & I can charge my phone, my headset, my notebook, my tablet, my keyboard, my mouse - everything. I can use the same cable to run my SSD with.
If a phone has a different connector - I would need an additional cable (or whole charger).
Additionally: It is possible to plug the phone into a TV/monitor. So more versatile:).
My mom reluctantly upgraded from her iPhone 8 Plus to the 15 plus. She loves taking pictures of flowers and nature, but doesn’t run around with a dslr very much anymore. And I must say, she is getting some incredibly beautiful shots now that she upgraded. She’s also enjoying Dynamic Island even though I thought she might hate it.
It isn't only you Sarah who feels like that about the camera specially with portraits and selfies: there are actually people who do screen caps of the live feed from the camera rather than actually taking the photo, the reason is Apple's heavy handed post processing.
Dunno if Apple allows you to turn it off now, but with older models that was the only way to have more natural looking selfies and portraits.
iPhone 12 is still very capable, like you said. I upgraded from that to the 14 plus last year only because of the bigger screen and battery.
If you want a camera that is way better than the one in your phone, don't buy a new phone, buy a camera.
I upgraded from a 12 to a 15. Reason because it’s been 3 years and the trade in allowance practically costs me a couple bucks a month for a new iPhone. I usually have been keeping my iPhones for 3 years anyway.
Still not much difference between a 12 and 15 aside from the physical features (dynamic island etc…). My wife still uses a 12 and against my 15 Pro there isn’t much difference. Want to make your iPhone faster, change the battery. I had hers changed at Apple and it sped it back up.
@@mulvihillmatt I agree I needed a device with 256 GB anyway cause with the 128 I only had 8GB left.
There isn’t much difference between your 15 pro and the 12 non pro?
Exactly. Which is why I think the iPhone plus models are the way to go. Bigger battery at the same basic specs means less charging cycles which means longer life of the phone as a whole. And an A14 or 15 chip at full performance is still fast enough for anything 99% of poeple do on their phones. @@mulvihillmatt
I agree about the AirTag sharing. The sharing is the number one feature of IOS 17 and should have been part of the initial tag release. We also have a tag for the dog's collar and the most utilized AirTag is the mailbox key in our house, both tags are shared with my partner.
It doesn’t work though. Causes the app to crash as of iOS 17.0.2.
I love that touching tips now allows me to share contacts! It used to be weird but now it has a real purpose! Really lets me know the other person before getting closer
Seems the 15 is the better go than the 15 Pro / Pro Max. The Titanium Aluminum Build in these higher end versions of the phone cause thermal issues. 15 it is.
$200 is quite a sum to pay for being a titanium beta tester anyway.
Always enjoy when Sarah and the other staff popup in videos. It's a fun treat!
12:08 this reminds me of the feature old Nokia phones used to have with Infrared. Samsung also used to have like an NFC transfer feature by tapping the backs of your phones, but seems no one is using it much.
It’s on the iPhone 14 too
samsung beam i guess back in galaxy s4 or s5?
s3 even iirc. I used to work for Samsung back then and nfc was a "new feature"@@kubotite9168
It's crazy to me how something as simple as always on display that existed even before Oled that I was using in 2011 on my HTC G1 and then on the Galaxy 2 oled is now becoming a "feature" currently rocking a Reno2 and have always on enabled with time and weather and important notification (that I can setup to my need) and so if I wake up and need to check time I just have to look at my night table like in the day when we used led clock display... Crazy right?
I was thinking about upgrading from a 13 Pro Max to a 15 Pro Max because of the camera and USB C… usually I wait until my phone is out of support or near out, lol. But yeah, definitely not insane improvements year over year…
If I were you i'd wait since the 13 pro max is still a great phone

that double chin GO CRAZY
I love the Butts videos they always make me smile.
The Standby mode works just like the Watch’s Nightstand mode: just bump your desk to light through display. No tapping required.
Looks like I'm keeping my 12 pro max for another year. The dynamic island is a gimmick they're going to abandon in a few generations when they develop an in-screen camera that meets their standards. Even in their promo videos, watching a full screen video is so jarring with a random black line in the middle of the screen. Not sure how they managed to move backwards from the notch but they did it.
It's rumored that next year's pro iPhones will move away from the dynamic island and the following year the vanilla models will follow route, also 120hz should be coming to the regular models so I'd hold off an upgrade for another 2 years.
I found exactly what Sarah says about the 15's camera to be true when I tried it out. It looks good on the viewfinder and just looks eh when the photo is taken.
tech tip for you, instead of clicking the shutter button and actually take the picture, print your screen. That's your problem solved
@@risaadthemerchant5142tech tip would be not spending 1000 bucks on a phone with problems like this, lol
@@risaadthemerchant5142 brilliant, or maybe buy two, and take a picture of the other's screen on the subject of what you want to take a photo of. Probably the intended use knowing Apple
@@risaadthemerchant5142that’s a terrible move, because now you have a 2MP photo instead of a 24MP photo.
I hate that I actually need the pro… I haven’t been tempted by any of the iPhones besides the SE due to the lack of a home button which for me doubles as the accessibility shortcut, and having it buried away in the control centre is a hassle and makes me less likely to use the features I need. It's frustrating that it’s a pro-exclusive feature although I understand why
Sarah is literally my favorite video host, I’m always happy seeing a video from her haha
A USB C charging cable alone doesn’t tempt me to upgrade from my iPhone 12. Nothing is dramatically different or better. I’m aware that all components have technically improved across the board… if you’re on e.g. an iPhone X or something, sure - but otherwise there’s little practical benefit. The nice thing about iPhones is that older phones get most of the same software features - which also means there’s less incentive to get the latest one. I’d argue going from a standard 12 to a 13/14 pro is a more appealing upgrade and now costs about the same as a standard 15.
are you from USA? USB C is huge in Europe. No more two different cables in the car :D no more "do you have iphone cable?"
Would love to see the charging speed test have more data in the future. How many watts was the power adapter that was used? Did the cable terminate in USBC or USB-A? Having a charging speed test with no mention of charging wattage throughout the duration of the test and what the phone was pulling is wild to me
You can charge all versions of AirPods, with a usb c to Lightning-cable
"Sharing contacts by simply touching tips" 😂
Let Linus have it for a drop test before you make a decision ...
Great review from a more mainstream perspective. I am also on a 12 and haven't felt compelled to upgrade even through the release of the 15.
The 15 is 17% cooler than the 14...
It's cool to have graphs, but I wish you'd had at least 1 phone for comparison. Or maybe 2. Like, the previous iPhone and one relevant competitor. Because it's hard to contextualize data with no comparison at all.
7:12 that slow realization this is goin to the meme wall 😂
Sarah on screen is always refreshing to see
5+ years of OS support is one of the strongest features of iPhones, and we've definitely plateaued in mobile tech. If you're still rocking an iPhone 8, there ya go, get a 15.
That’s exactly what I did though I went with the pro for the usb 3.0 speeds. For most people I think upgrading an iPhone only once you don’t get the new iOS makes sense. But outside of something like the usb switch it makes sense to upgrade to a previous model with the new os.
"support" is just a buzzword. phones need to work hardware wise.. you don't need latest OS to send texts or get a call. if you care about privacy just talk face to face.
ive heard rumors of google supporting the upcoming pixel 8 for SEVEN years. holy crap on a cracker
That WAS a differentiator for Apple. Now many Android makers give 4-5 years so Apple does not really do much better.
While I do agree, I seem to know waaay more people with 5+ years old android phones than iphones. strange
Only watching for Sarah 🥺
nice video !!
got a question, do you think the iphone 15 is good enough to convince someone from android to switch to the other side ?
Bro you're catching up to Android by implementing USB-C for the first time just now. People need to be switching to Samsung.
Ah finally, another Sarah video :) It's interesting that she approaches things from other angles.
The way she showed the giant black hole in the screen while saying "No more notches!" really threw me for a loop. People will reject reality itself in favor of Apple marketing BS.
Sounds like you don't have an iPhone. That's fine but it's really not something you would get if you haven't been using the past phones with notches for a while. It is better and not a notch. She didn't say it was revolutionary
It is better than it was before because it is smaller and they integrated it in software by adding some functionality around the holes. It isn't just marketing. And considering most new smartphones come with hole punches I don't see it as such a big deal.
Great video- the vibe was really light and fun here!
Ps. Being able to adjust the depth of field (f/stop) & focus area have been features for years, at least on the Pro models.
You can also make the adjustments to Cinematic videos after capturing them.
You can even create keyframes for focus so the focus area can shift as the video plays.
Great job, regardless! I capture a lot of videos & photos, so I’ve explored every little feature over the years.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I have a 12 Pro Max 1TB (incredibly overpriced, but the storage has been very nice). I probably won’t be upgrading to a new one for at least a year or two. The camera has to get significantly better than the one I own to justify it.
Being able to adjust the depth of field is a feature of portrait mode on any iPhone that supports it, but from what I can tell it works a bit differently on the new phones. With the new phones you don't have to select portrait mode it just automatically saves depth information for normal photos, so it's essentially the same feature but just an evolved version of it.
@@SkulletNeat - I appreciate the info!
I hate the dynamic island on my 14 Pro Max. I wish it was a notch every day. 😢😢😢

The dynamic island is such an odd fusion of the hole punch and the notch I personally think it looks dumb and can’t wait for Apple to hop on the under display selfie cams once the quality issues have been addressed
Just started watching this video. Waiting to see if she shakes the phone to make sure everything stays put, like when she assembled a computer for the first time...
Also get the feeling that she wouldn't go out and buy a new iPhone herself but if someone were to give her one, she'd make full use of it.
Every video with Sarah is a fun time guaranteed
For the camera tests: It would be nice to get a comparison shot with a previous gen device like the aforementioned iPhone 12, since this is likely a realistic upgrade path.
I usually upgrade every 4 years. Making it 3 this time because usbc. I said I wouldn’t upgrade from my 12 until usbc, no matter how many gens it takes
I kinda wish they made a new iphone SE actually worth buying price/performance in 2024 or 2025. Then maybe I would try owning an iphone just for the experience (using samsung for 10+ years. I upgraded recently from S8 to A34 (got it on discount for 250€ brand new) and because of the huge years gap between then it feels like a big upgrade loving it.
But I kinda want to use for some years an iphone in future just to have that experience.

I will never buy another apple product. However I'll happily watch Sarah talk about them as love her energy and screen presence. Truly one of your best at LTT.
More ahahhahaha 😅
The change from Lightning port to a USB-C was absolutely necessary after 2 different apple made HDMI converters have died and the things are so stupid expensive at $50 despite the plethora of $20 ones available on USB-C.
Also, I got my wife's Apple 15 for free from trading in her mini-13 due to a promotion from Verizon. I've only ever paid for 1 modern smartphone for myself and for her but usually have the latest. I kinda like Verizon.
I had been wondering when Sarah was gonna do another video recently. Guess today is the answer to that question.
I have a perfectly serviceable 14 Plus. I wirelessly charge so I honestly don't care about the port, so yeah. This is a nice upgrade for someone who really needs to upgrade, not for a year on year update. Great job Sarah!!
Can you share your opinion about battery in 14 Plus?
@@szymontopolski7692 Simply put, it's outstanding. Huge battery plus a standard 60Hz screen equals very long performance. I go 2-3 days sometimes and I use it all day long.
A rational thinking Apple user? Impressive. My ideology a little more extreme. Is that there is really not a reason to upgrade an iPhone unless lost stolen or no longer receives security/OS updates. Especially since about the iPhone 12 and the addition of 5g wifi 6. The processor and GPU are far more powerful than what most users will ever take advantage of because iOS is basic from UI layout and the lack of many Android features like dual Windows.
@@szymontopolski7692 It's at least a 2 day phone. Considering you're not pounding social media and heavy games all day. It's a beast.

13 pro max to 15 pro max... USB C was pretty much the only thing I noticed. I've been on 2 year upgrade cycles since forever and this is the first time I can't really "feel" the upgrade. Maybe I should just wait for 16 pro max.
My iPhone Pro 11 battery is not great anymore, that's the main reason I'll upgrade this year. If Apple were to release phones with 2 days batteries, I think I would keep mine for 7 to 8 years.
Then why not replacing the battery instead of spending full MSRP on a new iPhone ? I think you are trying to justify your purchase
Literally just change the battery at 1/10th of the cost, if that's the only problem
Or just say you want to upgrade, lol
@@thunderarch5951 I can sell my iPhone 11 Pro and get a good amount of the value, here in Brazil. So I it's not really 1/10th vs full msrp.
