Marina’s moonscorch form, Cocoon, is by far the most complex and symbolic of Marina’s inner insecurities, identity, and traumatic past. Being born in Prehevil to a Dark Priest Father, Marina was born male but her mother covered this up and raised Marina as female due to Male heirs being forced to follow the grueling path of dark priesthood. Marina’s Father always held discontent for her which resulted in her harboring strong negative feelings toward him which are shown through Cocoon. In this form, Marina’s body is flattened and contorted having become the host for a parasitic Cocoon growing out of her which is leashed to her neck and is controlling her to attack the player. From talking in battle it appears the Cocoon contains the remains of her deceased father who always loomed over Marina and wanted her to be his male heir and be used for blood magic rituals. The moonscorching has morphed Marina’s body into a twisted version which has grown new limbs and her head is now sticking out between her legs which symbolizes her gender dysphoric feelings from her trans identity in addition to the phallic form of the cocoon which is growing out of where her head should be. In an interesting similarity, Cocoon also has a callback to Samarie’s Dysmorphia moonscorch form, as Samarie talks about her new form being part of her metamorphosing into a Moth which specifically uses cocoons to do so. The design of cocoon bears a resemblance to Anima summon of Final Fantasy X as it has a similar upper and lower body to its form.

@@justice4most well, my guess is that right after her mom says she bore a ‚daughter‘ instead of a son, Domek saw no use for Marina as he thought Marina was born a girl, unfit for a dark priest and pretty much ignored her. That would explain how the mom hid Marina‘s actual gender up until this point.

@@jeffpulohanan9226 I researched the info and Father Domek, even if he was by all accounts not a good person as he was a dark priest, he intended that Marina should NOT come back to Prehevil, aka he did care at least a bit for Marina.
Marina went there because of her mother‘s passing and assumed her father sacrificed her for a ritual.
The real question is: Is that the actual remains of her dad or a manifestation of him by her mind?
Her father does end dying I think regardless of what you do so there's a good chance that it's actually his remains inside the cocoon.

For as… (thinks of losing the guard fight from F&H1)…let’s say, “brutal” as these games can be at times, there is a glorious artistry to everything. It’s so aggressively executed and downright disgusting so often, but it’s things like Cocoon or the God of F&H that make you just kinda sit there and think about stuff.
I have not seen a single happy fear and hunger video.

I think, considering that transgender people (like myself) go through so much media that implies a "choice" to transition, the idea that anyone who is transgender is "in a phase", or "is mentally ill" and on the contrary there is a lack of public media that says that transitioning is an option in the first place. With a lack of positive transgender influence to speak of it's harder to transition than it is to detransition. It would be insanely easy to detransition if Marina wanted to, the fact that in the ending where she "lives" (the lore is confusing) she is shown as an adult woman it can be assumed that she is trans. :3

Yeah you’re right man. It has that same sort of captivating mystique, grotesque forms and relationship paranoia/trauma that made the silent hill games so loved by my gen. I’m glad this gen gets something cool like that too. I hope it inspires some young folks in a good way.

The cocoon being her father made the design make more sense
i think it should be noted that cocoon are associated with two things ; catterpillar and spiders.
Catterpillar are often used in trans allegory since the cocoon is in this case a source of metamorphosis.
Spiders' cocoon can be 2 things, a trap where the prey is stuck waiting for it's end. Or a protection for their young that goes with the association of spiders and motherhood.
Here Marina's shape is NOT a spider as she seem to have 6 limbs and not 8 but the pose with the lifted arm is reminiscent of one.
Her father remain could then be her prey but it seem to be parasiting her, she can't let him go.
And yet her identity as a woman instead of a man is a cocoon weaved by her mother to protect her.
but the saddest part ? Her dad does recognise her as her daughter and want her to live.

The fact that Marina‘s Moonscorched form is ‚Cocoon‘, it means that her identity crises was heightened due to Rher‘s influence, making her into this odd amalgamation between a caterpillar, spider AND a cocoon. She isn’t fully one of either, yet combines and pretends elements of the other.

Being someone who only looks at the lore from afar because the games intimidate me, I never knew that she was actually trans, lol. It's also pretty funny to think that her backstory ended up working out for her gender identity too, it's a nice stroke of luck in a situation as unfortunate as hers.

There is also some implications that he did care for his daughter. He doesn't intentionally misgender her (he initially refers to her as "she" before "correcting" himself) and while his letter to her was cold and detached, he was trying to prevent her from coming home and getting swept up in the festival.

The fact that people will see this and say "She actually is okay with being a woman" without a lick of awareness is kind of sickening. There's something cruel in seeing a fate bestowed upon someone against their will and then using it as a way to validate your own persona.
It's like how Bridgette was Retconned in Guilty Gear to accept being a woman despite his story over the years having always been his struggle to prove his manhood after being forced to crossdress under threat of *literal death by ritual sacrifice.*
Of course he would be comfortable in his position to some degree. Exposure and familiarity make for comfy prison cells, but that doesn't change how constricting the walls are.

In the real world at least, you can't forcefully change a person's gender. If you try to raise a cis boy as a girl, or vice versa, they are bound to develop gender dysphoria in the same exact way that a trans person does when forced to live as their assigned gender.
Marina isn't just ok with it, she explicitly prefers it and actively refuses to switch back, she is a trans woman, canonically.
And even if it was just manifestation of her trauma, it's not your place to try to force her out of it when she tells you she wants to present as a girl. Just like you can't randomly give a person with PTSD "exposure therapy" or how you can't force somebody to get over an emotional block, sometimes, most of the time actually, people are forced to coexist with their trauma and mental issues, and that's ok

For all we know, in another multiverse the genders could just be wearing different clothes. Men aren’t necessarily genetically disposed to wearing just shirts and pants, although there MAY be traces of that disposition in evolution, but evolution takes so long that it’s basically minimal.
