My grandmother was born in 1900, and would tat at lightning speed! I tried to learn from her but she always said that she couldn’t do it slow enough for me to see what she was doing! I treasure all the pillow cases and handkerchiefs she tatted on for me! ❤️

Funny that the old folks could do it, but they couldn't teach it. My Grandma learned all the stuff in school. They used to teach children how to make necessities for themselves in public schools. Now, they teach politics in public schools.

@@valerieprice1745 I do agree!!! I taught school for 38 years; in inner city schools for 30 of those. Back in the mud-1980’s, I saw that there was a need for my students from lower economic backgrounds. I put together a Health unit called Look Good, Feel Good which was used for all 5th and 6th graders in my school. We talked about nutrition and other normal topics, but we also taught them to sew on buttons, iron clothes, and lots more. Things they had never learned that I had always thought of as just normal.
We ended with a luncheon where they planned and set a table with fancy dishes, dressed in their best, and ate a special meal, before spending the afternoon with guest speakers and workshops. The local business people brought donated goods and supplies. By the third year, the superintendent was even attending.
Unfortunately, I made a move to another district in a large city and was told that this kind of program would never be allowed in the much more depressed economic area I was teaching in.

@@valerieprice1745 As a former teacher (I just quit a few months ago), I have to say you are right on the money! The school system is so corrupt now and they don't teach kids anything useful that they will need to carry with them into life. They should incorporate teaching necessities, like you said!

@@valerieprice1745 Thing is, if you know politics but don't know how to tat, you will still get by in life. If you know how to tat but not how politics work, chances are you'll at best be a useful idiot that can make doilies for the politicians that now own you. Mind you, public schools CAN teach both. They do in Sweden at least. But if you have to choose between taching your children how to tat or how politics work, teach them politics. That way they can look out for themselves and their communities instead of being herded around by conmen.

I am 1 day old at this, lol. I went to a local fall harvest festival, at a rural life museum. I saw a lady there showing people this skill that was prevelant in rural life sometime ago. I was so fascinated by this, because it brought back memories from my childhood in my old country. I remember as a child watching these old ladies sit outside doing something similar to this using a needle like yours but a lot smaller. So the fascination was so great, I went and bought a tatting kit from the gift shop at the museum. I was mainly fascinated by the shuttle. Back in eastern europe I had never seen such a thing. The closest memory of a shuttle is from the loom of fate in the movie wanted. Anyways, today I opened the starting kit which contained a plastic shuttle, some thread, and instructions. The instructions teaches basic things like left hand position and right hand position. I learned that the shuttle pulls apart. The center piece is called a post. The reason I pulled mine apart, is because step 1 in the instructions was to make a slip knot. Step 2 was to put the knot around the post. I couldn't figure out how to put the slip knot around the shuttle post, and first thought was to see if it comes apart and it did. In hindsight I could have done it without pulling the shuttle apart. Anyways, I am really excited about this, and thank you for posting this video.
