  • A tour of my messy unfinished house!
Starting may be the hardest part for us neurodivergent folks, but finishing can be a bear too! If you are ADHD, autistic, or any other flavor of neurodiversity, you may be familiar with this phenomenon in your own home: your glorious interior design DIY projects are so close … but you just stop seeing the electrical boxes without a light switch cover, the unhung curtains, the bit of trim that didn’t get painted…
Well, I’ve landed on a through-plot for this vlog series: I’m going to take you along for the ride as I try to finish up all these bits and bobs left over from my many DIY interior design projects. When I’m done I’m hoping my house will be in tip-top shape to feature in my first video essay on Divergent Design.
Along the way, I’m also trying to learn how to edit videos in Premier Pro. How do you think I’m doing so far?
Everything here at the Spiral Lab, and in my home, is a work in progress, so if you have thoughts, ideas, suggestions-about interior design, or about video editing, feel free to drop a comment!

We are a family of 4 and we are all neurodivergent. I love how you think outside of the box when deciding how to live in your house. We do that at our house too and I am so glad to see I am not the only one. Our office space is in a living room we never used and I am strongly considering closing in our open plan kitchen a little, so we are not always sitting in our family room with our untidy kitchen. I hate looking at the kitchen. We use our kitchen and it is constantly untidy as a result ( I have teenagers who cook). Thank you for showing us your home. I find starting with something easy, something that you already know what to do with, something that doesn’t overwhelm or that you have all the equipment for is the best place to start. Helps me get momentum and gives me a win, which keeps me going. I need as many wins as I can get in a world that makes me feel like I am losing all the time.

I teach online. I always check what it looks like behind me and make sure ppl can't see the piles of books, etc. I've been putting bags of stuff that I need to donate in my car to get it out of the way... I have been driving for weeks with those bags in my trunk. Thanks for the tour. Beautiful home! (Also live in an old NE home and get the narrow hallways, tiny functional loos.) Peace and thank you for your content. ❤

Really fun to watch this, love realistic videos like this. Especially as so many of our spaces go through the same cycles. My brain usually lets things go completely, till my rooms are unlivable, and then gets a burst of energy and tackles months long projects in a few days. I'm still trying to work on this mode of functioning, so I can enjoy the process of design a bit more (as it's a huge passion). It's difficult and interesting to balance how my natural adhd brain does things, with an approach that's more sustainable and less overwhelming, but without using punishment and shame as motivators for that balance. Anyway, my work in progress continues! 🌺

Excited to see what comes of these projects! And I say paint haha because I also love love love to paint and I think small changes like that can signify big shifts. :) Also I like this vlog format!

Oh, you should see my streaming room ”outside the camera frame”… I have one room for everything, equipment, desk, stands, cables, instruments, all in some 4X4 meters. I do see it in front of me how it _could_ be fixed, I just never take the time.. the real work is priority, and I take on too much. Becomes great excuse to not do things.
But hey, I loved the home tour, and that art deco cabinet is beautiful.. and the doggies. Thank you for taking thentime to share it with us!

I am excited for this series of events! Maybe it will get me started on my own home-based projects. For me, it's so important that things be both pleasing and functional. I have a kitchen cleanup / reorganization to do...maybe later this summer. Can't tackle it now with full time school. I would suggest start with things that are smaller but will give you quick wins & motivate, like the stuff in front of/in the living room closet? And like you said, painting the heaters before fall rolls around (maybe save the bedroom painting for later on, once you've gained a bunch of momentum, and the radiators can just be a fun small paint project to tide you over?)

Loved this vlog! It’s really nice to see a normal home tour rather than a spotless house that is just not attainable for many of us. Your home looks lovely and the changes you talked about will really add to it! I also love this vlog style of video, shorter videos are always much easier to watch 😅 saying that, I loved watching/listening to your live streams but I just watched a bit at a time or listened to it as I was doing other things. Which reminds me to say that if it was ever something you’re interested in doing, I think you would be a great podcaster because you are really easy to listen to and explain things well, and I would definitely listen to a long podcast episode from you just on your thoughts on neurodivergence and disability.

I loved this so much, Marta, yay!!! It also sounds like you want to paint more and get sidetracked and spiral-y and I think that is worth paying attention to! Also, this might be a crazy idea, but I thought about it since you mentioned your budget. Some folks I follow on the Internet constantly promote their Venmo accounts and ask for tips, like $1 here or there or “a cup of coffee” (like $3-5) for people who may only be able to support them sporadically. Amongst a few supporters this can add up and pay for a can of paint here, some spackle there, etc. I’ve also seen these folks make Amazon wishlists for things they can’t afford themselves, dream of having, or simply aren’t prioritizing right now but would love as “gifts”-they put all sorts of things on these wishlists whether that be a $200 framed print or a $9 drawer organizer or a $45 carpet runner. Their supporters can select things and buy them anonymously to surprise them! It might be worth creating for things that are less urgent and you’re less likely to purchase yourself. Ok, that’s all! In the words of Joel…toodles! :)

I absolutely love this video. I actually found your channel in the first place way back when I was searching for ADHD home design/decor, and stayed for the other content.
I actually found this more watchable than your much older video on design, I think perhaps because of the vlog design? I'm not sure if you've heard of cartoon reject aka ADHD home TV, but she makes some really neat audhd home design content on TikTok and Instagram.
We moved to a new apartment 4-5 months ago and while I've added a lot of great stuff (more cubbies, shower shelves, skinny bathroom cart, a bookshelf as my wardrobe, rug for back door, etc) I still haven't made ANY decisions on a decorative rug, paint colors, curtains, and I haven't put up our entry shelf or picked an organizer. I really need to pick and get up the thermal curtains and rods before winter bc our new apartment is old, including the windows!
Our last apartment was an open floor plan and I haaaated it. In our new place I actually got my own bedroom/office, and our kitchen and living room can't 'see' each other. Despite not fixing this yellowy-beige visual nightmare yet I am so much more comfortable with more, separated rooms. I had thought having all my stuff out in cubbies would be ADHD friendly like my clothes being on bookshelves was, but instead it's overwhelming so I'm going to brainstorm more hidden storage options!
I really think it's good to let my mind aimlessly wander with all these home ideas until I suddenly feel like I'm ready to do something, and then to just do it. I see you're still in that contemplative stage, and I totally support letting your brain meander as long as you need.

This is motivating me so much and really taking the shame away for myself. Cause my home has also a lot of in progress areas and things but it can be lovely. Seeing your home helps me strip away the shame and motivate me to make it more lovely and do some of the things that I’ve planned for it for a long while. :)

I like this style of video from you! 😃 It is easier for me to watch it.
I have known that you have "gold" in your videos, but at the same time the videos being very long - combined with them being mostly one or more persons talking, in the exact same room and same position - makes/made it impossible for me to keep my attention to what was being said.
Which saddened me, because when I am able to sustain my attention, I get a lot of learning and insight from the videos.
So please continue to make videos like this one. 🙂

This is great feedback! I know lots of people have different attention needs, so I am definitely trying to mix things up. And when I finally get to making video essays, they will definitely be quite varied and intentionally will have lots of interesting elements to help keep attention. Right now I’m thinking of the livestream as “rough drafts” of video essays I want to make down the line, and the vlogs as practice learning the skills in video making and also working out some of the material I will use down the line. I’m thinking of having vlog series like this one, that each lead up to a video essay, and do the vlog series in “seasons” sort of like a podcast.

Oh thank you for saying that. It’s exactly the same for me. But when I read your comment immediately I thought „maybe you could just listen to the videos like a podcast while doing something like cleaning“ and that’s exactly the advice I needed to also hopefully from now on be able to access Marta’s Gold that she shares with us. So thank you for this comment. 💜😊
