🐌 we're on spiral time 🐌
The Spiral Lab is a collaboration between Marta Rose and Jesse Meadows, and is an experiment in branching out to explore special interests in art, design, and critical theory through livestream videos and video essays.
Formerly Divergent Design Studios, we are still all about neurodivergence-we're both neurodivergent, so how could our channel be anything else?-but we both yearn for room to bring our neurodivergent minds and creativity to bear on all sorts of issues and passions.
This is a lab, not a niche, and we're very much designing on the fly! We hope you'll come along for the ride and let us know what resonates.

discover your PERSONAL DESIGN STYLE by getting curious about what you HATE
Discovering your personal design style is an ever-evolving process, but asking "what do I like" might not be the best way to start. Instead, try looking at what you know you don't like, and ask "why?" Marta shares some insights she learned from taking a deep dive into what she kinda hates about the Farmhouse Design Style, and was surprised by some of what she learned about her personal design style.

Symptoms of Adult ADHD: What the DSM-V Misses about our Lived Experience Symptoms Adult ADHD
I’m 54, diagnosed at age 31. I’ve never researched ADHD, I just took the medicine, noticed it helped keep me awake during times I’m bored…like at work, and carried on. The medication does wonders to keep my emotions out of the way, helping to function solely on logic. However, it does nothing to stop my mind from having one great idea after another, and I MUST do them ALL. I love how youve explained it here! You are so right! Whenever I’m in the middle of a project, or have a mind to start one, I become completely disengaged at work, unable to focus, and start thinking of how I might be able to quit so I can stay home and earn a living doing something I enjoy doing.
What an absurd debate. I've heard as many people vehemently hate minimalism ( just look up I hate minimalism videos on CZcams) as I have heard calling people who love being surrounded by tons of objects mentally ill hoarders. We all have different needs. Some people like their minimal white space and some people like the Rococo lifestyle and there are people who need a bit of both in different aspects of their lives. I feel that as a society we have succumbed to factionalism in every aspect of our lives. Why? They both have their value and everyone should decide what suits them without suffering judgement. The presenters here keep talking about how minimalists are judgmental but refer to minimalists environments as creepy and soulless implying that that people that enjoy those environments are somehow creepy or souless. If either environment disturbs you to the point where you wont go to someone's house because it somehow disturbs you to the point where you can't be there then you are the one with the problem . Live your life and accept other's.
A Doctor with a bondage collar?.........Sorry I can't take you seriously.
So so grateful for this video!!! 24:34 ❤❤❤ I feel validated!
How ignorant of them to throw the term “mental illness” around. Collecting, arranging, and displaying objects is a creative process. Minimalism, to me, is the opposite… a DEstructive lack of creativity.
Unsubscribed from The Minimalists. Thank you. I was late diagnosed AuDHD & felt bad for my happy collections as I was always teased for it & thought they must be 'right'. Love your work!!
"Two steps forward and one step back is a spiral" omg that helps me understand the spiral time concept so much. And isn't that also like how the seasons go too...no one considers winter as regressive, it's just understood that winter is a time to slow down and pare down and burrow.
Thank you 😭. I'm so sorry about your sweet boy and so glad he has such an intelligent mother. I'm so scared that my son is similar and my husband will not understand it.
I totally did this w my stretchy camisole drawer and never looked back. it just works 100% of the time.
Finallly learning this stuff at 78. Very relevant video…THANK YOU
👍
This Mary Condo or whatever way you spell her name, was “Ok” UNTIL she started SELLING STUFF?! What?! Yes! SELLING STUFF! That makes her a fraud! Not as fraud in the fraudulent sense but she just turned everything she says into a farce! Yeah, get rid of what doesn’t give you joy but HEY but this from me and after a while throw this away too!
I don't know how this doesn't have a million views & likes! I love your channel!!!!
This is so good. I'm late diagnosed, single parent also ND child. Plus I have pets. Anyway, they're sick at home and I find I can't make music or work on my thesis when they're home cos of chores. I get so frustrated!! Totally vibe with this
I rarely if ever trust 'experts'. I read a lot & check everything just like the Buddha taught. And honestly it's made me very unpopular & I don't care as my research has always served me well! My psychologist of 20 years told me I am 'anti establishment' & neurotypicals have always told me I'm a 'rebel' or that I 'march to the best of my own drum'. Actually I don't understand how people DONT research claims? Like I cannot fathom it. I even recently researched canine behaviour & data after enlisting the services of some dubious dog trainers 🤣 My NT mama said that's one of the things she's learnt from me - research!! (Late diagnosed AuDHDer end of 30s woman with autistic child)
Thank you
I have adhd but all my stuff is organized. So im confused about this.
The ADHD industry???
The stark white room she describes with white paper on the books, and all that, sounds like a disorder to me…
The last tip is the best 😅😅 Took me a whole 44 years to realise!!
Lmao. Artist with ADHD denies science. As someone with ADHD, I’m disappointed. ADHD isn’t an excuse to not use proper logic and sourcing.
❤😊
I a few people who turned the dining room into their office.
I finally after 40 years feel validated thank you
I would say motivation is the biggest challenge.
23:29 yrs true
22:03 - at 59, I resonate with this point !
Thank you. This video was very helpful.
Ohmygoodness, that is how I store my clothes 😂
Not adhd but very dysfunctional. Great tips!
Crazy how relevant this is now as well
Oh my God, you are right on the point.People at my work say oh she's was.She can't read and write. Why is she even here? She's dumb oh hell to the no
I'm neurodivergent and open shelving is tough for me. It's strange I think, the more clutter I see with my eyes the more I forget where things it are. My problem though (and I've noticed it's exacerbated by unmanaged stress) is being able to put things back. Then it's snowballs, because if I don't put things back, I'm unable to remember where I've left them and with all of the other things I haven't put back, it's impossible to see through the clutter.
I remember watching howls moving castle for the first time and seeing howls home that was clean and minimalist, except for his room. Every inch of his room was covered in magical things and I fell in love with that idea. Minimalism and Cluttercore have their places and for me it’s the bedroom that is just mine and I can display all my stuff.
That vertical storing hack was really nice on my noggin.
In my case the diagnosis was the opposite of shame. I thought for decades that I had a bunch of personal flaws. The adhd industry told me those were symptoms, treatable both with meditation and behaviors
I think people should decorate their homes however they like and live whatever kind of lifestyle they so wish to. I personally am not into minimalism because I think their homes typically look so bland and lifeless, and like they aren’t lived in. And I’m personally not into that, but that’s okay. They can keep living like that if it makes them happy. And while I love having a lot of things on display in my room, a lot of clutter core rooms would be a bit much for me because of sensory overload, but thats okay because I don’t live in those homes. Other people who are into clutter core live in them so if they like their homes thats all that matters. And there is a big difference between clutter core and hoarding. Hoarders are unable to throw away anything so their homes become cluttered with actual garbage and are just overall unliveable. That is an actual mental illness. Maximalists however pick things out with some level of intent and they find a way to organise it all so that there is no garbage laying around and their homes are very liveable. These guys need to mind their own business and let people live however they wanna live.
🤔I'm procrastinating right now..
I hated the film these guys are referencing. Found out recently I'm a maximalist as far as design aesthetic goes. I don't give a crap what other people do or like. I like what I like and am not out to prove anything to anyone but myself. This OG Gen X'er agrees with Gen Z
I love the freedom to redesign!! I am looking at an old school house... And my family just doesn't get it
So refreshing to see positive comments full of strength, adaptability and the courage to be their real self. Boy, that’s a journey I want to take beside such lovely people. Thanks for inspiring me!! 🙏✨🤗
Never get good at? Not true.
Marie Kondo is so not suitable for anyone with ADHD.
Your incite is so good thank you so helpful 😊
Excellent. #7 is the best. You nailed it. The shame keeps us from hiring someone.
Thanks for doing this video. I have experienced this crash my whole life and never understood why until now (in my 50’s).
Slide into a task from the side😂
Thank you so much for this great content, i rellate to so many of the things you said here. Definitely will follow for more ❤
Thank you for this. You're brilliant! Videos like this make me feel like I'm not alone, and not crazy :), especially from another woman.
I was wondering what was going on, I would follow minimalism because I value intentionality but I’d get anxious when my space was too empty
