Truck Master: I just finished an injector job on my 2001 LB7 yesterday, and I truly wouldn't/ couldn't have tackled it without your video. Many thanks, all your videos are very well done, and easy to comprehend!
To give back a bit for other newbies: This is a big job, not super difficult but you must commit some time and a lot of patience. It took me about 24-man hours over 2-weekends to complete, as my first time. I performed the work in my driveway with outdoor temps in the 50's dropping to low 30's in the evenings. I surely could get this job done in a single weekend now, without having to refer back to videos and cross reference sub assembly steps -not covered in one place. My previous experiences include brake jobs, struts, shocks, exhaust upgrades, power window repairs, performance tuner, climate control and fluid changes. I will reply back later with more observations encountered for me.
Thanks for the feedback Iâm glad it worked out đȘ
Truck Master I live in the Grand Rapids area. I was wondering if and where you work on customer vehicles? I have a lb7 and Iâm almost positive it needs injectors.
one of the best videos technically speaking I have witnessed. Im a 32 year mechanic, and can tell you I would take my veichle to these guys. Real pros.
Hey. Iâm a 32 yr old mechanic as well. And I agree! Haha
Hands down the best and most useful video I have seen on Lb7 injector swap. Canât thank you guys enough now let me make it not look so easy like you guys did.
Great video!!! This channel will grow big with videos like this. Huge thanks to both of you for making it happen!
I did this years ago, and would have greatly benefited from your video. As I recall my effort, I'm sure that I spent 4x as much time and effort as I see here. Very well done video!
Thanks for this awesome video. I must have watched it 100 times while changing my LB7 injectors. This video is the best one Iâve found. Well done.
Thanks
You guys do a real good job documenting the project. I do like it when mechanics use fender aprons when working on my vehicles, only because I wouldnât want any inadvertent scratches on my truck. Plus it shows consideration for the owners property. Other than that, good job, keep up the good work.
If you watched the video it was the bigger guys truck. So he obviously didnât care
Just did my injectors same truck I nicknamed mine the white smoke but now I have to change the name!! I couldn't of done it without this video!! Thank you truck masters!!!!!
Being a seasoned automotive technician mid level tech for 10 years prior to starting my business i know i can handle this job. You guys made it look so easy. Im sure it took a little while. I like how diligent he worked. Seams like a great tech. I am planning on buying my first diesel lb7 within a couple years and using it to plow and tow my lawn care trailer. Also ide like a dump bed insert for all the grass clippings, and yard cleanups plus junk removal jobs i do! This truck is legendary.
Enjoyed watching what is involved in changing the injectors on my LB7. My mechanic said most of the cost was going to be in the 10-12 hours of shop time. I bit the bullet and paid him to replace them. Itâs not my daily driver anymore so Iâd be tempted to try it myself after watching your video. Thanks for sharing whatâs involved.
This is the best video for injector replacement for LB7. Definately gave me the confidence to tackle myself. Thanks for the videos and info.
Thanks
This is a great instruction video. I purchased a kit from injectors direct. The parts came in a few days. I watched this video carefully and it was the best instructioms. My install went pretty well and my lb7 runs great and is sealed up good. If you are replacing all the injectors buy a kit with new fuel lines the old one have rust and will contaminate your new injectors. With this video and torque specs from the Hayns manual the install took time but went smoothly. The install kit was invaluable as it had all the parts needed, from seals and lock tight for the injector cups new to new steal hi pressure lines and all the banjo bolt seals for return lines and ficm. The video is awsome and helps you get the extra tools for the install. Like you can you can use the end of an air hammer chisel (not the air hammer) in the injector bolt hole to help pop the injector out. To pull injector cups a 3/4 concrete anchor two nuts washer and 1 1/8 id pipe really works pulls the injector cups easily. HF crows foot line wrench set 19mm for torque and removal of hard lines. use Sil glide silicone on all rubber seals is a real pro tip. These tool tips from the video saves $100s in special tools and is apreciated. All tricks found while watching this video. I would recommend watching extra videos on injector cup install. Thank you Truck Master
Thanks glad it helped
Excellent work, and thank you for the content!!! I'm gearing up to do this job on my LB7 this spring đđ€
Thanks for the informative video Truck Master and Logan. Iâll be doing them soon to my 02 I just bought.
Great video, love how in depth you get in your videos.
I worked at a dealership and we had an LB7 come in and as the new guy they were so kind to give me the honor to swap the injectors..... it had over 400000 miles with the original injectors. So the valve covers was never removed which took a good while to pry loose. But it was my first LB7 job and I did enjoy the experience. Actually getting ready to do my injectors, cp3 pump and glow plugs once my parts come in.
Wow 24 minutes for lb7 Injectors! That has to be some kind of record! It took me and my mechanic 8 hours!
Great video guys! I'm looking forward to any and all upgrades you do to the blue biscuit/lb7.
of ALL the vidz on THAT style injector removal it is the absolute BEST on all of internet. good on u all !!!!!8)
I really want to thank you by far you two have some of the best videos on this CZcams most of the other channels are not even worth watching anyway that being said I a die hard power stroke guy my veins definitely are pumping blue all my buddies are dmax guys and after watching your channel Iâm thinking about buying a blue biscuit type truck I know where there is a few in the 4 to 5000 range a little rusty and crusty but thatâs life in the northeast on older trucks once again thank you and I would like to also thank you for your service to our great country being an E7 is no joke
This video made me comfortable to try it on my own and itâs done now, stripped 3 of the valve cover bolts thoughđ
A heel bar between the fuel rail and pry tab on the valve cover is another quick easy way to get the upper valve cover off. Also the debris in the top of the injector fitting is absolutely normal when you remove the injector lines as the nut is full of debris and it falls into the top of the injector as you are removing the line. That debris is in no way a sign of the condition of the injector itself. Also an air hammer bit fits into the injector hold down bracket perfectly and works better than the actual injector removal tool in my opinion.
Awesome video, can't wait for the next one.
You guys done a very good job at explain the whole process thank you very much appreciate it
Extremely helpful video thank you!
Best LB7 injector video. Thanks
Great video thanks for the pointers this is going to help me so much
This is by far the best step by step in how to replace lb7 injectors Iâm going to be replacing my tomorrow wish me luck !!
Thanks! You got this
Truck Master would you recommend re adjusting the valves?
Johnny, how'd the job go? Any problems or did this video walk you through without any hitches? I've got to do mine before long, thanks.
thank you for putting this video up. it helped me
Super easy way to get injectors out is use the high pressure fuel line you pulled off for leverage to wiggle it and pull right out, especially if using new high pressure lines. I prefer to use the number 1 cylinder line due to lack of bends.
It seams as if yâall have had done this a time or two great job step by step
Great information! Much more detailed and easier to follow than the other how-to vids on the subject.
As a side note, there are 12 bolts on the lower valve covers.
Most guys go to school or some kind of voter classes to learn this but look here we are all learning it for free thanks guys
I was charged over 2k for replacing a bad injector. After watching this video, Whew! I'm glad someone else did it!
This is exactly what I needed. Thanks guys. Now the task doesn't seem as daunting. Can't wait for it to cool off here in southern Louisiana so I can start this process!
Give us some of that heat up here in Michigan lol good luck to you
Truck Master high of 91 today. I'll gladly trade! Thanks again man. You don't know how much of a help this is. I can show this to one of my friends and we can tag team my truck one weekend soon.
Jason, gave you done the injector job yet?
@@shanek6582 was going to start this morning. But a broke a few ribs earlier in the week. So I'll have to put it off unless I can get some friends to help me out
@@shanek6582 just got finished with the first bank. Its really not that bad. Just a bunch of stuff to take off and put back on.
Thank YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! Helped alot
Videos like these are the reason I subscribed. Thank you very much.
Thanks I Appreciate that
Yesssir, Me Too!
Videos like these are the reason I love my cummins đ Great video though!!
When I did mine, I changed all the fuel lines and return line. However, I had to reuse my #7 fuel line as the new one was not bent properly and couldn't find one that would work. I brake cleaned the hell out of the old one and visually inspected it for any rust. Finally got it cleaned up. Runs good but still have the drivers side to do. đđ
Terrible memories of when I did this work on my CA LB7 last summer. EGR on the passenger side added to the job. I kept reminding myself of the $3k I was saving, although toward the end, I wasn't so sure. All is well now.
Pulling injectors can be easier by putting one of the old HP lines on and using it to twist and pull while prying under the hold down clamp. Toss those old HP lines unless your are sure you can't see any 5-10 micron particles đđđ. As others said, get new ones!
Regarding popping the upper valve covers, a short block of wood and a hammer, starting at each end, loosened mine easily.
Finally, while you are in there, adjust the valves. All mine were way loose. Use a section of lumber to super tension and block the serpentine belt, then put a wrench on the alternator pulley to easily turn the engine.
Don't prefill the fuel filter! Too risky and dirt can easily be introduced into the lines past the filter. Just use the primer button.
A final thought. Following considerable research. Im convinced problems with LB7 injectors are fundamentally due to the VCO nozzles originally used. SAC's were used in all later models (LLY and on) and injector problems were much fewer. SAC's are available for LB7's, but only in higher flow designs, which may not be compatible with the original FICM and ECM and will require use of a tuner.
All in all, you guys get a solid A on this video! đđđ
Thanks
First of all, Congratulations on your you tube channel. Now the real journey begins.... you've motivated me to tear down my truck lol. I have a 2004 Lb7 that needs a couple of injectors redon, because of your "in detailed video" by the way GREAT JOB!! to the both of you...I'm on a mission.... wish me luck guys... if I need any help, I will be contacting you!!!!! LOL Hope y'all have a Happy Holidays!!! HELPPPP
This is by far the best step by step video on lb7 injector replacement that I have seen! I have a couple of questions. What did you do to prep the injection lines before reinstalling them? The dirt on the injectors came fron the lines rusting and collecting dirt, not the fuel. Installing used lines is a potential new injector killer. I also capped the fuel rails and the injectors for more dirt protection. I also pulled the cups and replaced them with new cups and o rings just because I was there to prevent a possible future leak. Lastly I also re lashed the rockers back to .012. Other than these couple of thoughts, great vid!
All great points! We used brake clean for the injector lines and compressed air
Tanker bill what was the procedure to seating the new injector cups?
Definitely wanna clean up those lines. Major step in this. But otherwise a great video and I do like the air hammer tool trick!
Very well done video! Hope to see some LML stuff in the future.
Thanks and I plan on some good lml stuff in the future
Pretty damn thorough video! I dont even have an lb7 but I own a 6.2 haha
Looking to buy one eventually though! Hope i never have to refer back to this video but at lest i know its here now!
Thanks guys!
Very informative and well explaining details and tip good đ job đI learned new tricks if you have more video like this
Thank you guys your video helps a ton!!!!
Holy crap
I'm glad I had a shop do my LB7.
Thank you guys , you are make my day God bless you
great job guys I learned a lot thanks.
I hate when I get on forums or enthusiast facebook pages and hear everyone saying it's a nightmare. I need to do injectors and I've debated just running the truck into the ground....until seeing this. Looks pretty damn simple, just time consuming and annoying. Video is saved!
I use a 5.5mm on the covers. This cut down on them rounding out not the split hair. This is a great video. I attempted to video myself working itâs impossible. Ty
Perhaps a video on some injector nozzles on the LBZ next?? Iâd love to see that and Iâm confident you could make a quality video showing the process.
Thanks for the suggestion
Honestly not to bad seems simple abd straught forward, you earned a sub here
Awesome video fellas!!
This video just saved my bank account thank you guys so much
You should seal top of injector nut that connects to injector. It keeps dirt and corrosion out so next time you have to pull injectors all that crap doesnât end up in injector inlet.
Thanks for the video!!
Wash engine off First put in shop and let it dry over night dont need any dirt grit and grime getting into the engine
Zip lock bags and zip ties versus rags
Working thru the wheel well will help saved a persons back
Might as well/always replace both thermostats(why not)
Silicon on top of the high pressure fuel lines to keep dirt out
Thanks for the input we did install new thermostats but good point
I put silicon on top of my HP connectors at the injectors but the more I think about it, so what? I'll never reuse HP lines anyway and the injectors will be new as well. Properly torqued HP connectors will keep dirt out till then (next never, I hope) so I'm not convinced silicon is productive. Gotta admit, I do feel better having done it đ.
I agree with the silicone to keep dirt out, hard to believe that all the sand/dirt found in the injector high pressure feed line is from fuel and getting by the fuel filter, I could see it working by high pressure lines over time possibly, better to be safe than sorry.
The only thing I would not do is wipe the tip of the injector with a rag. I've had a 475 cat engine give me problems because a tiny piece of rag lint got stuck in the tip and distorted the spray patter
Awesome video men, my lb7 is the same color but mines s dually.. 0.0 -0.7 balance rates đȘđŒ
Damn, that's hell of process doing this job.
It sure was
Diesel Brothers < Truck Master
nice video I kinda cringed on reusing the hard lines but ive seen them not have corrosion. that snap on crows foot looks like a must have. I have a leak on passenger side looks to be coming from under ficm hard line but looking more around engine valley I see moist rubber lines oh boy hopefully I can fix it this weekend
Another trick I use to pull the injector out of the cup is by putting the hardline back on and use that as leverage to pull it.
Awesome job !
I didn't have much smoking at my exhaust, but I did have fuel in my oil.it was full up with diesel. The only thing that alerted me to this was I got a low oil psi warning at idle. So can I assume I have one or more bad injector. It's an 04 gmc lb7 that has 140k I bought in 2006 2nd owner. As far as I know never had injectors done.
What kind of work light is that? Really like it & thanks for the video, lots of good info.
i see the rocker arms adjustable, did you run the overhead while you were in there? Might help with cylinder compression if the valve seats are worn.
Great demo!... All the little tips and tricks are very helpful... the devilâs in the details.
nice work and nice truck!
I had striped on of those head bolts and I was wondering how did you get the ones you stripped out out
Great video guys
Great video!! Quick question. Does it matter how you rewire the injectors? Asking for a friend that's working on an LB7 on his on watching this exact video. Thanks guys!!
Would u replace the injector sleeve or are just new o rings fine do the sleeves go bad
Great video. That job makes me not want to consider a LB7 Duramax. These videos are great. I like to do my research before buying a vehicle. Your content is really opening my eyes on what DURAMAX items to look for and consider when looking for a project DURAMAX. Given the price the LBZs are demanding, think an LLY is looking pretty good!
I know you don't want to show how to tune a truck. I totally understand that. However, you say to take an Edge tuner to read injector balance. So, since no one selling a truck would tell a lie, how can you tell if a truck has been tuned and, if it has been tuned, how can you read the tune? The videos are popping up in different order but I think I'll keep watching.
You wonât know if the truck is tuned unless you hook it up to a computer but thatâs ok since you could just get it retuned
I cant find the next video on the start up afterwards. Just replaced all my injectors, bled the housing and the valve. Still no fire. Not sure what the issue is
Did you guys have to do any programming for the injectors ? Also did you run the overhead again or just put it back up thanks
If you are only replacing upper and lower valve cover gaskets, do you still need to drain the coolant?
The video around 21:25 minute mark. You talk about the 8mm black wire. Is that off the intake heater relay? Where is it mounted to?
Dont forget too let them know that sometimes the return bolts will strip out and that the driver side rear valve cover bolts can be and absolute pain in the ass. Ive done lb7 injectors on 3 trucks and never is it a fun ordeal.
thanks and great video
If you fast forward the video to 21:28. The wire you are holding what is that for? I went to find the end of it to find it not attached. My trucks been running pretty rough. Could that wire be the reason?
I have a question... I have a 2002 LB7 and one of the high pressure fuel lines is leaking. I am going to replace it and saw how you take it off. The video really doesn't show how you put it back on. Do you just pull the old one off and put a new one on? Does it require a certain torque spec? I'm guessing it doesn't since you just used a crows foot wrench to break it loose. Also, do I have to worry about air in the system?
Where did you get the work light that was hanging on the hood?
Hey buddy I actually just watched your video for the first time and I actually am about to tackle my first LB seven injector job this weekend do you have any tips for me I have basic mechanical skills I mean I do a bunch of gas mechanical work such as engine swaps transmission repair rear and repair stuff like that so I donât think this will be an issue to do this injector job do you?
As I'm doing the injectors on my ol lb7 I think.. what has this truck been through since I've owed it ten years.? #1 favorite. My brother borrowed it without permission and got a speeding ticket. 113 mph. . Hilarious! Then I wonder how fast is the lb7. ?!
What is the torque # on the high pressure lines? For reinstall obviously
Hey so put new injectors in and add the cat filter set-up, still smoking planning on the Airdog once I can get it. Not sure what I need to be checking out now, just not running as it should yet. I walked into this knowing I was going to need to put lots of work into it. I also know that I've got some major wiring issues could that be part of my problem hidden in the wiring. I will be going through it all once it warms up and I got time.
Thanks for all your great videos enjoy following them.
So I changed back to the factory fuel filter and cleaned up mostly. Still have smoke when driving not as bad. When I take off in low gear it acts like it's flooding, like an old c carb motor, then just takes off. Just wondering if I need to replace all the wiring to eliminate that possiblity. Just not sure what I need to look at next.
Helpful video guys
Thanks
Does bad injectors causes smoke on tail pipe once engine temp warm up?
Now I see why this type of repair on the lb7 is so expensive. Pretty labor intensive. I'm looking at a 2004 duramax that MAY be an lb7 but idk for sure I have to check out the vin #. Hopefully it's actually an lly but I just wanted to stop by this video and see what I'd be getting myself into before I make a decision on it. Trying to be smart about this lol
How did it work out?? I'm in the exact same position but I'm definately thinking it's a lb7.
iâve got a question lol how would i single out one injector thatâs stuck open i donât have the money to put it in a shop or buy all injectors i just need to single out one for now to get it running i was told to disconnect a injector line and witch ever one stops the knocking is the one but when i disconnect it the fuel line it wonât crank i appreciate any advice!
i took mine out of passenger side 3 were wet with diesel but the one in the front was dry and rusted what does that mean
So im looking for injectors came across performance injectors 35+ 50+ power what does that mean will i get more horse power with them
Awesome video guys I don't know the Duramax yet I've always wanted one and these videos and this channel has really quite honestly helps me decide what kind of truck I want and I think I do want to buy an l B7 is what I think I'm wanting a lot of mods you can do it and seems like it's less b******* on the motor then anything else
Elliott Baraby I have an lb7. I wish I would have saved my money and bought an lbz
What gasket did you use for the upper valve cover gasket?
Hey man yall done a dam good job on this video thank yall this really helped me!!! Do u know how 2 rebuild a hydro boost for a 05 2500? It be great it u had a video of u rebuilding 1
Hey man.....I just upgraded my hydroboost unit on my 2004.5 Duramax LLY to a ACDelco model #178-1036....it's a major improvement!!! You can buy on Amazon for around $227. GM knew they had a problem with the old model.....you can tell by the upside down casting number on the side of the hydroboost. I would suggest getting a couple of O rings to replace on the to pressure lines on the Hboost just in case we they are worn This info helps you out.
very well and profecional explained thanks
Hey truckmaster, Iâm from Michigan and was wondering if you could get back to me. I just did my lb7 fuel injectors and they are 30% over injectors. It runs fine with good balance rates in park at idle. But when I put it in drive the balance rates go crazy and it starts to haze. Do you think I need to get it tuned because of the bigger injectors? I drove it yesterday just fine and Iâm not leaking anything and there is no fuel in my oil. No coolant loss either. Please get back to me
which injector kits do you recommend? where do you purchase for best value?
SOB cummins guy here , thinking of getting a beater lbz as a work truck but not anymore after this nightmare
