I only noticed bass playing because of Gary. His contribution to Uriah Heep was priceless. Why do all the greats end this way? Sadly missed Gary.
Gary Thain is by far one of my favorite bass player's in rock and roll history.

I've been a bassist my entire life(64 yrs) and I can say, without a doubt, that my style of playing is a direct result from hearing Gary....especially on the Live 73 album. I play it weekly...to this very day. If he could only see my smile every time I hear him on "Circle of Hands"!! My Lord ....nothing like it!! Magical. RIP Gary and Thank You! Thank you also for doing this feature!!!!
I'm also a life long bass player (65 yrs old). He was my biggest influence. I've been complimented many times regarding my style. Gary Thain has always been my best kept secret.

I was a fan of Uriah Heep from a young age but I remember years later re listening to their music that I realized what a great bass player Gary Thain was, absolutely one of the best ever!

I liked Gary Thain's playing in Uriah Heep so much, that I had to know about the Keef Hartley's band (his previous band) just to hear more of his playing. He was great for them too.

Been a UH fan since 1971. It’s no coincidence that with the arrival of Gary Thain and Lee Kerslake UH was jettisoned into super stardom. As good as their first 3 albums were D&W was the beginning of without a doubt their best years of music creativity. Unfortunately you can begin to start hearing the cracks in the band on Wonder World as the album is definitely the most disappointing album of the Gary Thain era. Obviously drugs and alcohol were taking their toll. After Gary was dismissed he was replaced by an absolutely fantastic bassist/singer in John Wetton. Amazingly as good as JW is he just could not replace the amazing chemistry that was had between Gary Thain and Lee Kerslake. Although UH still has some fairly decent albums after Gary was gone I would say most people will agree UH reached their peak when Gary was with the band.

At 1970 I began to listened rock music and I listened Uriah Heep with Gary Thain there. Most amazing bass guitar player and until now I still listen him with the band.

I got to see Gary with Uriah Heep twice, and as a Drummer, Lee was one of my early influences, Heep is one of my favorite bands, still rocking
I heard the live album around late 74. I was so into Gary's playing. Fantastic.

Thain could drive Byron's vocals like no one else. December 1972, Pirate World Pavilion, Dania Florida, Heep took the stage with Easy Livin'. Thain was stage left, about 10 feet from me. Before Byron began with the lyrics, he turned to Thain, and Thain walked forward center stage, pounding away on his bass. Byron reached up, tweaked Thains "A" string tuning peg, then began to belt out the lyrics. I have never forgotten that moment!

As a bass player myself Gary has always been a huge influence on me. Jazz bass with Acoustic amps just like another one of my faves John Paul Jones. He had a great style that was busy but added not overshadowed Uriah Heeps songs. Great tone great look. RIP Gary.

Uriah Heep showed promise but never quite up there with the big boys. Kinda rock, a little prog, good players but nothing spectacular, okay songs. But when Thain joined, they went to another level. The groove, the melodicism, the energy all shot up several notches. And you can tell it inspired the band and the producer as well. The result -- Demons and Wizards, which is an undeniable masterpiece.
Thank you, great video. As being a bass player myself, he has been a tremendous influence on me.

I was blessed to see UH in 2010 with the legend Trevor Bolder on bass
What a wonderful musical mind. He was truly one of the most beautifully gifted and sadly underrated player of all time. His choice of notes was breathtaking. His manipulation of melodies was unsurpassed. His early death...heartbreaking. LONG LIVE THE HEEP.
Excellent backstory filling in the huge gaps & questions I've always had about Gary. That period of UH was the absolute best IMHO. I was about 14 years old & was enthralled w/ the group then & ever since. Thanx for putting this together as it's a fitting memory of a beautiful talent that we lost way too early on. Always remembered, never forgotten!

Back in those days Uriah Heep was putting out a new album every 6 months.
Saw Ken Hensley solo 1980. They played 'Easy Livin' and Hensley mentioned writing with "The Late Great Gary Thain" five yrs later. I talked to him after the show, so nice a person to chat with.

No one is the 'greatest ever'. Just diff styles. I started plying Bass in 1977 (still do) and every band I join says 'There's something about your playing I like'. They ask: Bruce? Entwhistle? Squire? Geddy? No Gary Thain. And of course 'Who?' Always my fave band UH. Rainbow is another. Always wanted one of his Jazz Basses.
@@jeffreybennett8893 I did say in my opinion. That’s because his technique as well as his sound were great. Some of the people you mentioned look very three fingered when you watch them. My opinion. As for his Jazz basses I made my own replica of the one he played on Heep Live 73 of which I am proud to use.

I’m way too young to experience the 60s and 70s, but there’s a certain vibe or mystique from that era. I love the music from small garage rock like bands to the big powerhouses such as Heep or Deep Purple. There’s a video of Gary’s bass solo during a live show where he goes into a melodic rendition of a classic piece, I can’t remember which, and it just sounds so powerful. God knows what he would’ve gone on to do… RIP Gary, David, Ken, and Lee.
Edit: Bach’s little Fugue in a G minor was the piece that Thain performed, he was turning classical music into melodic rock bass playing haha

The best rock bass player there's ever been in my opinion.
Gary Thain had the most Tasteful and Biggest Sound of any bassist in history. I'm as amazed listening to his unique style today as I was when he first caught my ear back in 1972.

I'm a bass player for nearly 50 years, I liked Uriah Heep in the seventies but never really listened deeply. I think it's time to ReDiscover Uriah Heep and Gary Thain, thanks for this great video.

Enjoyed this, wonderful player. I remember when the infamous Jaffa DJ/Writer and Hedonist Ray Castle got a right old telling off from David in '74 when he kept calling the album "Wonderland'" during an interview at the groups hotel. Gary wasn't there, he had gone down to see his Mummy...as Mick and Lee put it. I nearly forgot Gary was a telegram boy for the PO in Christchurch, I met an old workmate of his.
Thanks for posting this. I got into Uriah Heep at age 16 in 1976 with "The Best Of Uriah Heep", which had come out that year. It was really different music than what I had been listening to, so it took some time to grow on me, but when it clicked, it really clicked. I studied the chart on the back of that album, so I knew who Gary Thain was, and of course I loved his sound. My next album was "High And Mighty", featuring John Wetton on bass. I loved that album as well, but it had a completely different sound. All that to say that until these videos, I knew who Gary was, and I knew his fate, but I didn't know his story. Thank you for bringing me that story.
a pleasure to have done it. When I left Gary and came home from UK 1967 he wrote me a few times with updates and then I lost contact but later on a friend told me he had joined Heep and I had never heard of them so later bought Demons and Wizards with Easy living , I could hear Gary all the way through the disc ,it was superb! I was so happy for him that he had made it as that was his ultimate goal .He was a fantastic guy and friend and my only regret is that I was not there to guide him to help stop his bad habit . As a group Me and The others, we never touched the stuff nor did we ever drink much we only smoked cigs. ( probably too many) but later Gary found pot and used to smoke the odd bit in a pipe but I never thought it would lead to this. Although he has gone it is quite remarkable that his legend keeps living. thanks for your post . regards Dave C. NZ

I have memories, just, of seeing an NZBC current affairs item on our one TV channel of Gary Thain back in NZ visiting his mum. All I really remember is Gary walking away from the camera in a residential street wearing a fur lined jacket. I was 12/13 at the time and already a Heep fan. My only other news memory is that he electrocuted himself on stage, which presumably came from an "Evening Post" newspaper item.
In those days in NZ we weren't allowed FM radio, and AM state radio, the only radio, turned off overnight, with reduced hours on a Sunday, starting 9am. Sometimes the techs played "test" tracks before official broadcast began. It is burnt into my memory I woke up one Sunday, turned on my 8 transistor Sanyo radio, permanently tuned to 2ZM , heard static, then suddenly Sweet Freedom, both sides, uninterrupted, played, finishing just before the official start at 9. I was an enthralled 13 year old.
I also have the memory that Sweet Freedom was a local number 1 album several weeks running.

Listen to Gary's bass on Overdog with Keef Hartley Band, he's got Jazz, Soul R&B influences early on. How he incorporate them into rock is brilliant. As to why he could move easily around chord changes, that's his Jazz n Blues knowledge. Love you Gary.

Saw the guys live in 1980,still have the ticket.that show changed my musical taste forever.
Gary and the boys paved the way for alot of people. If you have ever heard him play,then you we're influenced one way or another by it. He has inspired countless musicians. To be better players. God Bless Gary, may you live forever in are hearts,and souls. Love ya man!!!

I was listening to UH in the early seventies..by then I had already picked up the Bass, but as I listened to more of Gary's playing and those riffs it gave me inspiration, I was driven by his bass work, I still listen to UH and I still play today..

we heard about here in NZ very shortly after. it was a bad happening.
I was a fan of Uriah Heep since 1970 something when I saw them at the Marquee club.
I did not know that Gary was a kiwi!
yes 100% Kiwi. when our band Me and the Others, with Gary arrived in London early 1966 we did an audition at the Marquee club.

Unfortunatey, Heep didn't Had Peter Grant as Manager, the Zeppelin Man. Uriah Heep would have been around a Lot longer and healthier unser his Wings. And, of course, in the best line-up in their Carrer

Mick Box blames the management for ignoring Gary when he was recovering from his injuries. But he could also take responsibility himself. After all, your fellow band members are the ones who are supposed to support you and wait til you're ready to get back on the road. But Mick Box and the others obviously didn't have the patience to wait and moved on with a different bass player, leaving Gary behind on his own, knowing very well he was addicted to heroin. This led to his death in 1975, he was only 27. That's quite a weight to carry, for the rest of your life.I stopped being a fan of UH after Gary's death. It just gave me a bad feeling.
Erm, at 12.58, that whatever-cover is all wrong! Ken Hensley would never meet John Lawton for the later incarnation of Uriah Heep until after both Gary and David had been forced to leave the group. The original cover was much more blue and red, though! I DO have the original LP, after all... ;P
140 shows and 5 albums in 3 years doesn't seem to be that crushing. Of course the tour dates are because they are jammed together as close as possible because you have to pay the trucking company, drivers, road crew, sound, light and staging people and you have to keep the dates one nighters pretty much to maximize profits with the only days off being the luck of the travel schedule and booking dates. the managers and record companies could care less if you were travelling and performing concerts daily. They only care about the bottom line at the end of the tour. I have worked in live entertainment since 1976. That is simply how it's done. I still work in live entertainment and I'm in my mid 60's. I have slowed a bit though. I call it semi retirement even though it's more work than most people do full time at times.

Why wasn't Gary buried in New Zealand ?
he was cremated in London and his ashes spread in a rose garden, his wife Maureen would have organized that

Gary's had 3 brothers and one had died and one was living over seas ,that left one who was the youngest and never knew Gary as we had left NZ when he was a baby ,his Dad had died and that only left his Mum, Rita who was getting on in years and hadn't seen him since about early 70's when Heep came to Auckland so with all that in mind it was probably a better option for his wife who he had separated from to take care of his parting in London , that's the only scenario I can think of but thanks for your caring .
